SER Analysis of QAM with Space Diversity in Rayleigh Fading Channels

  • This paper derives the symbol error probability for quadrature amplitude modulation(QAM) with L-fold space diversity in Rayleigh fading channels. Two combining techniques, maximal ratio combining(MRC) and selection combining(SC), are considered. The formula for MRC space diversity is obtained by averaging the symbol error probability of M-ary QAM in an additive white Gaussian noise(AWGN) channel over a chi-square distribution with 2L degrees of freedom. The obtained formula overcomes the limitations of the earlier work, which has been limited only to deriving the symbol error rate(SER) of QAM with two branch MRC space diversity. The formula for SC space diversity is obtained by averaging the symbol error probability of M-ary QAM in an AWGN channel over the distribution of the maximum signal-to noise ratio among all of the diversity channels for SC space diversity has been reported yet. Analytical results show that the probability of error decreases with the order of diversity gain per additional branch decreases as the number of branches becomes larger. On the other hand, the performance of 16 QAM with MRC becomes much better than that of SC as the number of branches becomes larger. By giving the order of diversity, L, and the number of signal points, M, we have been able to obtain the SER performance of QAM with general space diversity. These results can be used to determine the order of diversity to achieve the desired SER in land mobile communication system employing QAM modulation.

소프트웨어 기반 Loran-C 신호 처리 (Software-Based Loran-C Signal Processing)

  • With GPS being the primary navigation system, Loran use is in steep decline. However, according to the final report of vulnerability assessment of the transportation infrastructure relying on the global positioning system prepared by the John A. Volpe National Transportation Systems Center, there are current attempts to enhance and re-popularize Loran as a GPS backup system through the characteristic of the ground based low frequency navigation system. To advance the Loran system such as Loran-C modernization and eLoran development, research is definitely needed in the field of Loran-C receiver signal processing as well as Loran-C signal design and the technology of a receiver. We have developed a set of Matlab tools, which implement a software Loran-C receiver that performs the receiver's position determination through the following procedure. The procedure consists of receiving the Loran-C signal, cycle selection, calculation of the TDOA and range, and receiver's position determination through the Least Square Method. We experiences the effect of an incorrect cycle selection and various error factors (ECD, ASF, sky wave, CRI, etc.) from the result of the Loran-C signal processing. It is apparent that researches which focus on the elimination and mitigation of various error factors need to be investigated on a software Loran-C receiver. These aspects will be explored in further work through the method such as PLL and Kalman filtering.

  • Vital signals provide essential information regarding the health status of individuals, thereby contributing to health management and medical research. Present monitoring methods, such as ECGs (Electrocardiograms) and smartwatches, demand proximity and fixed postures, which limit their applicability. To address this, Non-contact vital signal measurement methods, such as CW (Continuous-Wave) radar, have emerged as a solution. However, unwanted signal components and a stepwise processing approach lead to errors and limitations in heart rate detection. To overcome these issues, this study introduces an integrated neural network approach that combines noise removal, demodulation, and dominant-frequency detection into a unified process. The neural network employed for signal processing in this research adopts a MLP (Multi-Layer Perceptron) architecture, which analyzes the in-phase and quadrature signals collected within a specified time window, using two distinct input layers. The training of the neural network utilizes CW radar signals and reference heart rates obtained from the ECG. In the experimental evaluation, networks trained on different datasets were compared, and their performance was assessed based on loss and frequency accuracy. The proposed methodology exhibits substantial potential for achieving precise vital signals through non-contact measurements, effectively mitigating the limitations of existing methodologies.

  • A new signal processing system for real time displacement measurement in sinusoidal phase modulating interferometry is described. Although sinusoidal phase modulating interferometry is effective in measuring with high accuracy the displacement of an object, conventional signal processing takes a long time. In this method, detection of the object's displacement is easily achieved by sampling the interference signal at those times that satisfy certain conditions and by processing the sampled signals with electric circuits in real time.   • In this paper, we designed two preprocessing adaptive filter - high pass filter and notch filter - using FPGA. For minimizing the calculation load of multi-channel and high-resolution ECG system, we utilize FPGA rather than digital signal processing chip. To implement the designed filters in FPGA, we utilize FPGA design tool(Altera corporation, MAX-PLUS II) and CSE database as test data. In order to evaluate the performance in terms of processing time, we compared the designed filters with the digital filters implemented by ADSP21061(Analog Devices). As a result, the filters implemented by FPGA showed better performance than the filters based on ADSP21061. As a consequence of examination, we conclude that FPGA is a useful solution in multi-channel and high-resolution signal processing.

  • 협조행동이 요구되는 다수의 자율이동로봇 시스템에서 각 개체는 주변환경의 인식뿐만 아니라 지속적인 환경변화에 적응할 수 있는 고도의 추론능력을 요구하고 있다. 이에 본 논문에서는 강화학습을 이용하여 동적으로 변화하는 환경에서 스스로 학습하여 대처할 수 있는 협조행동 방법을 제시하였다. 강화학습은 동물의 학습방법 연구에서 비롯되었으며, 주어진 목표를 수행하는 과정에서 개체의 행동이 목표를 성취하도록 하였을 때는 그 행동에 보상을 주어 환경의 상태에 따른 최적의 행동방법을 찾아내도록 학습하는 방법이다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 포식자들이 협조행동을 통하여 능동적으로 움직이는 먹이를 잡는 까다로운 문제에 제안한 방법을 적용하여 그 성능을 검증하였다.

  • In this study, we derived stop-and-go normalized DD, dual-mode normalized sato, dual-mode NCMA blind equalization algorithm for complex data. and then, the convergence characteristics of the proposed SG-NDD, dual-mode NSato blind equalization algorithms are compared with those of SG-DD, dual-mode sato algorithm. In genral, the normalized blind equalization algorithms have better convergence characteristics than the conventional algorithms.

  • In this paper, a digital signal processing circuit for Position Sensitive Detectors(PSDs) is introduced to substitute the conventional analog signal processing circuit and to compensate disadvantages of the PSD. In general, the analog circuits have the problems such as noise accumulation, sensitivity for environmental changes, and high cost for manufacturing. Moreover, the intrinsic nonlinearity problem of the PSD makes it hard to measure the position accurately because it is difficult to be overcome the problem by using the conventional analog circuits, which can be solved by using the digital signal processing circuit. The circuit is implemented by using a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA).   • Since optical delay line signal processing which utilizes optical fiber as delay line elements can provide high speed and broadband signal processing, the optical delay line signal processing has numerous applications. Recently, many research papers which optical delay line signal processing techniques are being applied to OCDMA are published. The author has published paper on the design method for optical fiber filters of lattice structure. However, the previous design method does not realize the transfer function all the time. It can be realized with constraints. In this paper, we propose the design method that can realize the transfer function all the time without any constraints for the optical fiber filter of lattice structure.

  • In this paper, we describe study on the development or multi-path ultrasonic gas flowmeter using a transit time method. This system includes 5 pairs of ultrasonic transducers. ultrasonic signal processing unit using switch matrix method, computation algorithm of gas flow rate, spool piece type multi-path pipe unit. We have developed enhanced type of main ultrasonic signal processing unit using switch matrix method fer multi-path ultrasonic gas flowmeter. Also, we have developed the new transmitting & receiving method of ultrasonic waves and the new signal processing algorithm for the computation of ultrasonic transit time from received ultrasonic waves. In this study, we have designed more compact signal processing unit compared with the conventional hardware system of multi-path ultrasonic gas flowmeter. We have confirmed its reliability for multi-path ultrasonic gas flowmeter through the laboratory test using calibration system. In the future. we will perform the field test for the developed system in the POSCO gas line.
