  • This study identities various types of subjective perception of hearing-impaired persons on sign language interpretation using Q-methodology in an attempt to explore ways for developing more useful sign language interpretation services for them. For this purpose, 35 statements are extracted based on literatures and in-depth interviews and Q-classification is conducted for 20 interviewees. The results identify a common perception on the provision of sign language interpreter to frequently used institutions of hearing-impaired persons. They also derive three distinguished types of perception: seeking specialization of sign language interpretation, seeking traditional sign language interpretation services and seeking expansion and improvement of sign language interpretation services. Based on the results, the study suggests residence of sign language interpreters in public facilities, improvements of qualification system and education and training courses, specialization by field and improvement of the practice of sign language interpretation services, provision of customized services to the elderly and use of sign language interpreters reflecting the needs of the users.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine possible improvements of operation of sign language interpreter qualification system through looking into specific perceptions of sign language interpreters and Deaf sign language interpreters in the field and Deaf people who use interpretation service on current sign language interpreter qualification system through focus group interview. As a result of the thematic analysis, three high-level categories were derived for each group, and as a result of recombining them, 'change to a qualification system in which sign language interpreting competency and expertise can be recognized' and 'improvement to a qualification system based on Korean Sign Language and Deaf culture' been sorted out. Based on the above research results, 'establishment of a permanent institution in charge of management and operation of sign language interpreter qualification tests', 'reorganization into a qualification system that reflects the professionalism, level and experience of sign language interpreters', 'all test questions and exam procedures are conducted mainly in sign language', 'a system in which the Deaf take the lead', and 'enactment of a code of ethics for sign language interpreters and Deaf interpreters' were suggested.

  • Laotzu's view of language is well expressed at the beginning stanza of "道可道 非常道" of Tao De Ching, the interpretation of which is pivotal for the proper interpretation of the entire text. Two lines of interpretation of this stanza have been proposed; The first view regards the letter "道" in "非常道" as representing that which is signified by a sign. The other takes the posture that the letter "道" is itself the signifier of the sign. I argue in this article that the second posture should be taken to interpret Tao De Ching properly, contrary to the traditional interpretation of this stanza, by pointing out the verses which inevitably contradict each other when interpreted according to the first view. The second view leads to the conclusion that everyday language is not sufficient enough to describe the supernatural beings, including Tao, accurately, and seeks a way to augment ordinary language for appropriate description of such supernatural beings. The strategy Laotzu adopts in Tao De Ching is to expand the expressive power of ordinary language by extensive use of metaphors. This paper discerns 4 conceptual metaphors in the sense of Johnson and Lakoff(1980) which underlie the metaphors used in Tao De Ching: (1) Tao is Void; (2) Tao is Mother; (3) Tao is Valley; and (4) Tao is Untrimmed Log.

  • As the number of the deaf who go out into the society has been increasing, in most of the lectures, the demands for the sign language interpretation and the accuracy of the interpretation have become more important. Especially, in order to improve the accuracy of the sign language interpretation, the interpreter must be aware of the appearances of the lecturer and the contents of the lecture, and at the same time, the interpreter must look toward the audience. This research introduces a system which can be effective in a small classrooms or auditorium, by providing the maximum information about the lecturer and the contents of the lecture. Also, in order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed system, this research includes the discussions about the related systems and test methods. In conclusion, delivering the images of the lecturer and the contents of the lecture to the interpreter by employing the proposed system has been proved effective.

  • It is difficult for the hearing impaired to use the counseling service without sign language interpretation. Due to the shortage of sign language interpreters, it takes a lot of time to connect to sign language interpreters, or there are many cases where the connection is not available. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a system that captures sign language as an image using OpenCV and CNN (Convolutional Neural Network), recognizes sign language motion, and converts the meaning of sign language into textual data and provides it to users. The counselor can conduct counseling by reading the stored sign language translation counseling contents. Consultation is possible without a professional sign language interpreter, reducing the burden of waiting for a sign language interpreter. If the proposed system is applied to counseling services for the hearing impaired, it is expected to improve the effectiveness of counseling and promote academic research on counseling for the hearing impaired in the future.

  • This study aims to develop communication devices and interfaces to address the communication needs of the hearing impaired. Through three FGI (Focused Group Interview)s with deaf persons and sign-language interpreters, we studied the communication methods, devices, and needs of the deaf. On the basis of our analysis, we propose a communication framework to improve their means of communication with normal or other deaf persons. We have designed a communication system that is based on the proposed framework: this system suggests functions for remote sign-language interpretation services for conversations in close-range and over the phone. Details are presented regarding the design of interfaces for video calls, text messages, and digital memos, addressing the conversation patterns of the deaf. The system includes hardware form factors for video phones that facilitate sign language conversations and also mitigate other auditory problems in daily life, such as problems with door bells. The design concept has been verified through a test with six deaf users.

  • The purpose of this study is to define the fundamentals of one symbolic concept, so calles vestment-sign, based on the logical relationship of sign system about the trichotomy by charles S. Peice's sign concept for the communication system of meaning in the non-linguistic image domain. To prove the argument of vestment-sign, I selected 3 type of vestment language by styliste, Elsa Schiaparel-li. The third image vestmental chosen here, titled“Larme-Illusion(1938)”,printed by Salvad-or Dali will produce one symbolic proposition as a logical result which is generated and developed through the interpretation of other images. First of all the text, which is manifested by Elsa Schiaparelli's first image vestmental, tit-led“Notation Musical(1937)”and is symbolized as one category in the representation of the form, is regarded symbolic and metaphorical from a standpoint that the title and the meaning is connected to the form. The second image vestment, titled“Ruches Noirs(1938)”represents externally splendid feminity man-ifested by the symbolic and metaphorical expression. And the purity of sensitivity aiming to humanity in the detail of the poetic feeling of naturalism makes us imagine the battle fild of furious sensitivity. Like as the result of the battle, the third image stimulated our eyesight with the“absence”of dressing function. The proposition of the text,《Death》which the third image delivers, constructs sign system to bring up a meaning with the disappearance of physical“signifier”. This establishment of the symbolic concept presents the etymological authority of symbol generation called“Design”.

  • Vivienne Westwood, the revolutionary cre-ator of Punk fashion(ripped T-shirts, bondage clothes, fetishist accoutrements) was a street fashion designer. Although Westwood's clothes have frequently been described as decadent, degenerate and unwearable, they have also exerted a powerful influence on interntional fashion. Westwood became a fashion designer in the mid-1970s, when he emergence of Punk put London back on the fashion map for the first time since 1965. Just as the Mods, Rockers, and Hippies of the 1960s had embraced par-ticular styles of dress and music, so also did the Punks create their own subculture. The Punk“style in revolt”was a deliberately“re-volting style”that incorporated into fashion various offensive or threatening objects like tampons, razor blades, and lavatory chains. Vivienne Westwood and parter Malcolm McLaren articulated this youth culture, who roots lay in music. A sign is something which stands for some object or idea, while the semiotics are the ex-ternal expression for an internal meaning. Semiotics can be used as a medium of communication between dress and music. A language is simply used for explicit of meaning, while the style of dress and music express the explicative and implicative signs. Peirce's scheme among several theories of the semiotics was chosen for this study, because the Peirce's scheme was the first non-language communication medium between external and internal stages, and readily inter-preted the styles of dress and music. Punk rock was studied at first to identify the style which influenced Vivienne Westwood's works and then Semiotics were used to apply the above results to the 1970s and 1990s for analyzing and interpreting the Vivienne Westwood's works were also interpreted by the symbolic characteristics of Semiotics, because the symbol of semiotics often found at Youth Cults reflected punk rock. The symbol of revolt, decadence, grungy, freedom in Vivienne Wes-twood's works wre determined by using Punk rock's semiotics. This study could conclude that the style of dress and punk rock were able to be interpreted by semiotics.
