  • Outrigger systems are highly efficient since they utilize the perimeter zone to resist lateral forces, similar to tubular systems. The entire structural weight can be reduced due to the system's significant lateral strength. Therefore, it is the most commonly selected structural system for tall and supertall buildings built in recent years. In this paper, issues regarding the differential shortening effect during construction of the outrigger system and the special joints used to solve these issues will be addressed. Additionally, the characteristics of wind and seismic loads in Korea will be briefly discussed. Lastly, buildings in Korea using an outrigger as their major structural system will be introduced and the structural role of the system will be analyzed.

  • The KLCC Petronas Tower 2, one of the world tallest twin reinforced concrete towers constructed in Kuala Lumpur, Malysia, was instrumented during construction for the measurement of vertical time-dependent deformation of columns and corewall. Field measurements were made by means of vibrating wire strain gauges at the corewall, tower and bustle perimeter columns at selected floor levels of the building. Parallel to this observation, laboratory tests were performed on concrete cylinders made in the field in order to obtain the variations of concrete compressive strengths, elastic moduli, strains of creep and shrinkage with time. Monitored vertical deformations are in a good agreement with the prediction based on actual construction sequence and concrete properties from laboratory tests, as well as the analytical results reflected in actual column compensation of the building.

  • The present study aims to investigate the ultimate strength and geometric nonlinear behavior of composite plates containing initial imperfection subjected to combined end-shortening strain and lateral pressure loading by using a semi-analytical method. In this study, the first order shear deformation plate theory is considered with the assumption of large deflections. Regarding in-plane boundary conditions, two adjacent edges of the laminates are completely held while the two others can move straightly. The formulations are based on the concept of the principle of minimum potential energy and Newton-Raphson technique is employed to solve the nonlinear set of algebraic equations. In addition, Hashin failure criteria are selected to predict the failures. Further, two distinct models are assumed to reduce the mechanical properties of the failure location, complete ply degradation model, and ply region degradation model. Degrading the material properties is assumed to be instantaneous. Finally, laminates having a wide range of thicknesses and initial geometric imperfections with different intensities of pressure load are analyzed and discuss how the ultimate strength of the plates changes.

  • Crude palm oil (CPO) is obtained from the fruit of oil palm tree, and is rich in palmitic acid, ${\beta}$-carotene and vitamin E. CPO containing a balanced range of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids is fractionated mainly into liquid palm olein and solid palm. Palm oil is highly stable during frying due to its fatty acid composition, and the synergistic antioxidant activity of ${\beta}$-carotene and tocotrienol. Blending and interesterification of palm oil and other oils are the main processes used to offer functional, nutritional, and technical advantages to produce oils suitable for margarine, shortening, vanaspati, and frying oils etc. The advantages of using palm oil products include cheap raw materials, good availability, and low cost of processing, since hydrogenation is not necessary. Future research should lead to the production of oils with a higher oleic acid content and a higher content of vitamins E, carotenoids, and tocotrienols.

  • In this paper, we examine the shortening of the theatrical window whereby films play at theaters for 90 days as one of the most portentous issues that could reshape the Hollywood film industry. We first examine the windows system that protected the status of movie theaters and the studios' attempt to shorten the theatrical release to create a premium VOD window in response to the declining revenue of DVDs after 2007 and the rise of streaming services. We then look at some of the major disruptions in distribution COVID-19 brought about. We also explore the shortening of the theatrical release in the wake of the pandemic and shows the changes in the theatrical release, along with the expansion of streaming services, raise questions over the long-held primacy of the theatrical release and the definition of film with the theatrical release as its part. From this, we highlight Hollywood at the crossroads of major changes with its future less certain than ever before.

  • This paper aims to reexamine Homorganic Cluster Lengthening in Late Old English whereby OE short vowels became lengthened before specific consonant clusters such as /-ld, -nd, -mb, -rd, -rð, -ng, -rz/. As for the motivation for this apparently odd-looking sound change, I propose that it was the result of phonologization of the phonetic lengthening of syllables containing resonants homorganic with a following voiced obstruent. Adopting Luick's (1898) view of "resonant+voiced homorganic obstruent" phonologically as a single coda, I show that Homorganic Cluster Lengthening is in fact a natural sound change that can be explained with the proper postulation of a few quantity-related universal constraints within the framework of the Optimality Theory. The fact that the constraints and their ranking as posited in this paper can also account for Pre-Cluster Shortening points to the validity of my approach in the analysis of other quantity changes in Middle English.

  • This study compared the curing temperature of the bubble sheet and the photothermal insulation sheet incorporating carbon-based photothermal materials to reduce concrete curing time as a part of shortening construction period. As a result of the experiment, bubble sheet with photothermal material B is judged to be effective in shortening the curing time under hot environment.
