  • Hair style is an expression of beauty for individuals and at the same time a clear social representation. It may be regarded as a means of knowing social recognition about social values and groups of the moment. The hair style clearly discriminated so-called the new woman, emerged during Chosun's modernization, and the old woman. Thus the purpose of this study is to examine changes in social recognition about the behavioral style of the new woman by relating them with women' s movements and with changes in female education policies. Results of the study can be described as follows. First, the new women in the 1920s were evaluated positive as those who were leading struggles against Japan and enlightenment campaigns. But between the 1920s and the 1930s, those women were thought to be negative in that they were appearance-oriented, extravagant and sticking themselves to reality. Second, how a variety of social figures recognized short-hair was determined here through reviewing the mass media of the 1920s. At that time, some men were positive about short-hair like feminists while others denied the convenience of the hair style in life and were negative about the new women's individualism and pursuance of luxurious appearance. Third, there were both positive and negative social recognitions about short-hair in the 1930s. which were supported by the mass media of that time.

  • This study focuses on the visual effects of various neckline-haristyle combinations on the perception of face image and type. The study employed a model with oval face and examined 35 combinations made up of five necklines and seven hairstyles. Looking at various face images depending upon different necklines, in case of round, V, boat square, and high necklines, long wave hair and medium wave hair produced a feminine image of marked individuality; long straight hair that covers the forehead and medium straight hair gave an image of charm and purity as well as an image of neatness; and long straight hair short cut hair showed an intellectual image. Regarding the perceptual type of face depending upon the different necklines of round, V, square, and high, the long straight hair covering the forehead and medium wave hair had the effect of an optical illusion that made the face look short and round; and short cut hair made the face line look distinct and the face look oval and slender.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of hairstyle, hair length, and hair color on women's professional image. The quasi-experimental method by a $2{\times}3{\times}3\;(hairstyle\;{\times}\;hair length\;{\times}\;hair color)$ factorial design was used. Subjects were 343 women in Seoul, Korea. The bright brown hair was perceived to be less professional than the black and the dark brown. The straight hair was evaluated to be more professional than the wavy hair in the short and the medium length hair, whereas the wavy conveyed a higher professionalism than the straight style in long hair. The shorter the hair was, the more professional the image was. Among 18 stimuli, the short straight hair in black was evaluated to have the highest in professional image, and the long straight hair in bright brown was the lowest. Perceivers in their 40's and 50's evaluated the bright brown hair to be more professional than those in their 10's to 30's did. The present findings provide that hairstyle, hair length, and hair color are significant cues when perceiving women's professional image.

  • The karyotype of Korean short-hair cat was presented using the G-, C- and NOR-banding techniques. For chromosomes preparation, the fetus skin fibroblast cells were cultured and metaphases were obtained. In results, the Korean short-hair cat had 38 chromosomes with XX or XY, which consisted of 5 pairs of metacentric chromosomes(Group A and C), 3 pairs of submetacentric chromosomes (Group B), 6 pairs of medium metacentric chromosomes except for 1 pair of medium submetacentric D2 chromosomes (Group D, E), 2 pairs of acrocentric chromosomes(Group F) and metacentric X and Y sex chromosomes. In G-banding analysis, the Korean short-hair cat exhibited a typical and identical G-banding pattern in each homologous chromosome. Total number of bands and landmarks on the G-banded chromosomes of Korean short-hair cat well correspond to those of international standardization of karyotype of domestic cat. The heterochromatins of Korean short-hair cat chromosomes distributed at terminal and/or centromere regions on almost chromosomes by C-banding analysis. In addition, the C-banding pattern showed greatly heteromorphic in some chromosomes. Using the AgNOR-staining, we found the nucleolar organizer regions(NORs) of Korean short-hair cat located at chromosomes 1p12 site in E group. The quantity and number of NORs were constant among cells.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the hair style, and perceiver's generation on the perception of a high schoolgirl's image. A quasi-experimental method by questionnaire was used. The subjects were 253 high schoolgirls and their mothers living in Jinju. The data were analyzed by using frequency, factor analysis, Cronbach's alpha-reliability coefficient, three-way ANOVA, and Duncan's multiple ranges test. The high schoolgirl's image was derived in five dimensions by factor analysis: schoolgirl look, prettiness, individuality, activeness, and cuteness. In the image based on the hair length, it was assessed that the short cut and the bobbed hair styles looked more like school girls. And the short cut and long hair styles were considered as showing individuality. On the other hand, the bobbed hair style was assessed as cuter than styles of other lengths. For the bangs, the short bangs were found to more school-girl look and cuter than the long bangs. The mother group, whose ages were older than that of the other group, evaluated that the stimulative pictures had more school-girl look, individuality, prettiness, activeness and cuteness, compared to how the school girl group evaluated. It was shown that the generation gap produced different opinions about the stimulative pictures. Therefore hair style, bangs style, and difference in generations were found to be the variables affecting perception of high school girl image.
