  • Potential chemical hazards encountered in painting operation of four shipyards and a ship-repair shop were investigated through the material safety data sheets (MSDS). Material safety data sheets (MSDS) for 307 paints, 50 thinners and 34 binders were collected and reviewed. It was shown that various organic solvents such as aromatic hydrocarbons, aliphatic hydrocarbons, ketones, alcohols, glycols, glycol ether acetates and esters were contained in painting materials. Of these solvents, xylene was found in the largest number of painting materials. sixty percent of the thinners contained xylene in the contents of 20-100%. Other most frequently found solvents were 1-methoxypropanol, 1-methoxypropyl acetate, n-butanol, methyl isobutyl ketone, toluene, isopropanol, and n-butyl acetate, etc. Glycol ethers such as 2-methoxyethanol (2-ME), 2-methoxyethyl acetate (2-MEA), 2-ethoxyethanol (2-EE), 2-ethoxyethyl acetate (2-EEA) and 2-butoxyethanol (2-BA) were regarded as having the potential to cause adverse reproductive effects, embryotoxic effect and hematotoxic effects, and were found in some epoxy panting materials. Coal tar pitch was included in some paints(13%) where polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) could be contaminated. Inorganic pigments such as lead chromate and zinc potassium chromate were found in some paints (8%). The epoxy resin based paints, which may contain isocyanates such as toluene diisocyanates and hexamethylene diisocyanates causing potential sensitization and asthma to upper respiratory organ, were mostly used in the shipyards. The constituents in the MSDS were significantly different from the results analyzed using gas chromatography/mass detector: minor constituents or impurities were omitted in many MSDS. In conclusion, xylene was the most frequent organic solvent in painting materials, and glycol ethers, including 2-ME, 2-MEA, 2-EE, 2-EEA and 2-BA, were found some products. Also, painting workers may be exposed to PAHs, lead, chromate, isocyanates, organic tin and other various chemicals. The compositions of chemicals in painting materials were variable significantly, and the hazards were changed. These facts should be considered in environmental monitoring and control of the hazards.

  • During the shipbuilding construction, the repair works will be occurred by various reasons such as the natural disaster, mistakes of engineers or workers, defect of material, and so on. The one of the engineer's responsibilities is to design considering every possibility and to prevent the repair works due to the mistakes during construction stages, but actually it is very difficult and impossible to avoid every mistake. However, it is also the responsibility of engineers to find the best solution for the unavoidable mistakes which is to maintain the capacity of vessel and guarantee the safety for the repair works considering the construction schedules and economic cost. In this paper, it will be introduced the brief of repair works to the structural damage of the moon-pool structure in drillship which is built in our shipyard. For the verification of the structural strength, the fatigue analysis has been carried out based on the guide of Classification society. Furthermore, the modifications of structure design and welding procedure have been applied to avoid the stress concentration in the moon-pool structure.

  • Today's ever-increasingly competitive shipbuilding market makes it essential for a shipbuilding company to have more efficient production processes and higher productivity as well as better design ability to obtain its competitiveness. A well-established production execution schedule plays an indispensable role to achieve this goal. Most shipbuilding companies carry out an evaluation on their mid-term plan once it is established. However, no evaluation activity exists for a production execution schedule, because practically all the companies depend on the field workers for the production execution scheduling. In this study, a prototype of a ship production execution schedule evaluation system is developed based on the component based design (CBD) methodology. This system enables one to make a production execution schedule that reflects up-to-date shipyard situation and to validate whether the schedule is feasible or not by running a production simulation according to the schedule. Users can also make use of the system as a decision supporting tool that compares several different execution schedules and evaluates which one is the best execution schedule.

  • In quay processes in shipyards, it is difficult to manage workers and to maintain secure working environments because at least 1,000 people can occupy the quay at the same time. In this study, a system was designed to monitor the environment and processes of quay operation. In order to lower initial investments and the costs of maintenance and operation, the entire system consists of six connected components. Considering the communication environment of the shipyard site, Wi-Fi and the LoRa communication protocol were selected for the system. The feasibility of the communication protocols was verified by data transmission tests in the field. The designed system can provide real-time information about employees working in the quay area, the safety status of moored ships on the quay, and step-by-step alarms in dangerous situations based on the detected information. The system is expected to prevent or greatly reduce safety hazards.

  • In this paper, we present a block media communication (BMC) system which employs powerline communication to the equipments used in the welding process for ship-assembly and uses metal block as a communication medium. Inductive couplers are installed on digital feeder and pin jig. Information signal is added to the current generated by the welding gun, and applied to the block. When the welding operation starts, information generated in the field is transmitted to the monitoring server in real-time. The field test on the BMC system confirms that the transmitted data are correctly received at the server. Since the proposed system can be built without any changes to the existing welding process, it is helpful to increase competitiveness of the shipbuilding industry through smart factory of shipyards. It is also possible to quickly respond to emergency situations that may occur to workers in an electromagnetic wave shielding environment or a closed space, the effect of preventing industrial accidents will be great.

  • As the Fourth Industrial Revolution accelerating, countries worldwide are developing technologies to digitize and automate various industrial sectors. Building smart factories not only reduces costs through improved process productivity but also allows for preemptive identification and removal of risk factors through the practice of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) management, thereby reducing industrial accident risks. In this study, we visualized pressure, temperature, power, and wind speed data measured in real-time via a monitoring GUI, enabling field managers and workers to easily access related information. Through the work environment monitoring system developed in this study, it is possible to conduct economic analysis on per-unit basis, based on the digitization of production management elements and the tracking of required resources. By implementing HSE in shipyards, potential risk factors can be improved, and gas and electrical leaks can be identified, which are expected to reduce production costs.

  • Objectives: Receive Operating Characteristic(ROC) curve with the area under the ROC curve(AUC) is one of the most popular indicator to evaluate the criterion validity of the measurement tool. This study was conducted to develop a standardized questionnaire to discriminate workers at high-risk of work-related musculoskeletal disorders using ROC analysis. Methods: The diagnostic results determined by rehabilitation medicine specialists in 370 persons(89 shipyard CAD workers, 113 telephone directory assistant operators, 79 women with occupation, and 89 housewives) were compared with participant's own replies to 'the questionnair on the worker's subjective physical symptoms'(Kwon, 1996). The AUC's from four models with different methods in item selection and weighting were compared with each other. These 4 models were applied to 225 persons, working in an assembly line of motor vehicle, for the purpose of AUC reliability test. Results: In a weighted model with 11 items, the AUC was 0.8155 in the primary study population, and 0.8026 in the secondary study population(p=0.3780). It was superior in the aspects of discriminability, reliability and convenience. A new questionnaire of musculoskeletal disorder could be constructed by this model. Conclusion: A more valid questionnaire with a small number of items and the quantitative weight scores useful for the relative comparisons are the main results of this study. While the absolute reference value applicable to the wide range of populations was not estimated, the basic intent of this study, developing a surveillance fool through quantitative validation of the measures, would serve for the systematic disease prevention activities.
