  • In this paper, a novel WUSB (Wireless USB) over WBAN (Wireless Body Area Networks) MAC protocol is proposed to improve efficiency of sensing the personal information. Furthermore, a localization technique based on that protocol is also proposed for indoor localization in a ship. For this purpose, the proposed localization algorithm minimizes power consumption and estimates location with accuracy. It is executed independently at each sensor node on the basis of WUSB over WBAN protocol. And it minimizes power consumption by estimating locations of sensor nodes without GPS (Global Positioning Systems).

  • The recent increase of fresh farm products, hazardous cargos, and high-priced goods in marine transportation has caused an increased demand of cargo owners and shipping companies with regard to the monitoring of the location and state of cargo. To meet this increase, numerous technologies are being studied for the monitoring of the cargo state. Cargo containers on a ship are loaded on a ship's deck and in a ship's hold, which is located under the deck. However, Since the developed technologies mostly transfer the container status information that collected by mobile communication, it costs a lot to install communication infrastructure on ship. And the ship's hold is completely sealed with a cover, and communication with the reader positioned at the ship's bridge is difficult. Therefore, most existing studies on container monitoring on ships have focused on the monitoring of containers loaded on a ship's deck. Accordingly, this study suggested system configuration for the monitoring of containers in a ship's hold using IP-RFID technology. The suggested system configuration was tested on an actual ship under navigation, and the test results are given in this study. The test results verified that the monitoring of containers in a ship's hold using IP-RFID technology is effective.

  • An wired ship area network has functionality of remote control and autonomous management of various sensors and instruments embedded or boarded in a ship. For such environment, the DiffServ (Differentiated Services) realizes that the high-speed real-time flow with the higher priority has the guaranteed minimum data rate and is delivered faster. As a result of this DiffServ effect, the intelligent Ship Area Networks can be implemented. In this paper, an packet drop technique is proposed to outperform the previous RIO (RED In and Out) drop mechanism for DiffServ in ship area networks. the proposed packet drop technique does not manage the individual flows and divides them into several flow groups according to a criterion. And it guarantees the fairness between individual flows in the same QoS class through the group-based control. In simulation results of the proposed packet drop technique, the link utilization decreases than RIO. But it guarantees more data rates to DiffServ flows passing multiple bottleneck links.

  • New ship technology and trapping equipment must be implemented into ship sailing which is currently used nowadays. The day/night camera stability, user interface, track, and remote control system of Jim structure for all over the world should be competitive in the global market. The development equipment sales are losing its competitiveness edge of the existing sailing ship communications equipment due to supply to the aging of the entire system and integration of the development especially for foreign equipment competitor.

  • This letter considers a ship-to-ship communication system in which two ships exchange their information with the help of multiple relay ships. For the system, we propose a novel relay scheme that allows relay ships to select a method between analog network coding (ANC) and digital network coding (DNC) adaptively based on channel state information. We also provide a relay selection criterion in supporting the proposed adaptive network coding. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the conventional scheme employing only the ANC or only the DNC.

  • In this paper, we reported the bypass unit for ship area networks in order to detour the communication failure regions and poor communication links. The device was composed of three parts of circuits for power cut-off, protection, and coupling transformer. Since the coupling transformer exerts a dominant influence on the performance of the by-pass unit, we have tried to find the optimal magnetic core materials and its dimensions. The prototype was passed through the performance test of insertion loss, temperature, and vibration characteristics. The insertion loss was around -2 dB in the range of 90 kHz ~ 30 MHz and the average communication speed was 59.2 Mbps in the laboratory. A pilot communication test using the developed tool was conducted in the training ship of the Korea Maritime and Ocean University. As a results of experiment, we showed that the wired communication among the heterogeneous-links in the ship area networks are possible by the bypass unit and also a high speed communication services are available in ~ Mbps by using a power-line.

  • An integrated ship area network has functionality of remote control and autonomous management of various sensors and instruments embedded or boarded in a ship. For such environment, a wireless bridge is essential to transmit control and/or managing information to sensors or instruments from a central integrated ship area network station. In this paper, one of reliable schemes of In-ship sensor networks using a Grid-based WPAN is proposed. The proposed scheme is based on a novel grid network which allows a multi-path communication, and is robust, energy efficient. The results demonstrate that the proposed Grid-based WPAN outperforms the IEEE 802.15.4 based network in terms of success ratio and power efficiency.

  • The object of this paper is to describe the ubiquitous computing technologies for ship, which is produced and assembled by many steel blocks. It includes the testing of a 2.4GHz wireless communications platforms and radio-frequency identification technology with the blocks disturbing the wireless communication. The power line communication that is established in a ship already is also experimented for some data transfer. Also, possible application areas of the ubiquitous computing technology to ships are discussed. At last, the test bed copied from an actual vessel was installed and data acquisition tests were established using wire and wireless communication. In this paper, we implemented some ubiquitous computing technologies in the test bed simulating a ship environment and investigated the basic characteristics of ubiquitous computing technologies.

  • This paper describes the implementation of control and monitoring system of ship's lamps at local area using power line communication method, power line modem(PLM). We design modem, microprocessor interface for electric power control by frequency control and analog to digital signal conversion, lamp device. PLM communication is very economical using existing electric power line unlike RS-232, RS-485 communications. We verify and confirm by experimental work that control and monitor lamp system for ship by an PLM communication.

  • A wireless bridge is essential to transmit control and managing information to sensors or instruments from a central integrated ship area network station. In this paper, a WPAN protocol is adopted for development of a seamless N-screen wireless service in Indoor and Ship Area Networks. Furthermore, to provide the OSMU (One Source Multi Use) N-screen service through P2P streaming in the seamless WPAN protocol, a Grid-based WPAN networking technology is proposed and analyzed. The proposed Grid-based WPAN networking technology supports multi-path and fast path-setup functions for N-screen communications. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed Grid-based WPAN networking technology outperforms the IEEE 802.15.4 based network in terms of N-screen transmission delay.
