Ship maneuverability is mainly determined according to hull-propeller-rudder system of a ship and directly related to the ship safety during the operation in the ocean. Among hull-propeller-rudder system the rudder system had direct concern with the ship maneuverability and a special rudder has been recommended to improve the ship maneuverability. In this paper the study of flapped rudder's 2-dimensional section was accomplished Model tests had been carried out with different angles of attack of a main foil and flap's deflection angles to predict the performance of the flapped rudder and the 2 frame particle tracking method had been used to obtain the velocity distribution in the flow field during model tests. $Re=1.027{\times}10^4$ had been used during the whole experiments and measured results had been compared with each other.

Recently, a vessel's maneuvering performance is considered to be an important subject as marine pollution from the ships that stranded on a rock becomes more severe. So, IMO(International maritime organization) has adopted Resolution MSC.l37 to enhance international standards of ship's maneuverability. There's more than one way to improve ship's maneuverability. This research focused on improving ship's maneuverability by high-lift rudder. To predict the maneuverability, the numerical simulation model was used. The evaluation of maneuverability was carried out by turning test and zig-zag test. The results obtained with these simulation showed that the high-lift rudder would be effective in improving the turning ability of the ship. But it was clarified that there Has a possibility that course changing ability night become bad through an increase of rudder lift.
In this paper, we studied to improve Inoue's[1] and Kijima's[2] model used to predict ship's manoeuvrability in initial design stage. To perform this work, we had PMM(Planar Motion Mechanism) test and rudder open water test for 12 Models of low-speed blunt-ship which have horn type rudder and bulb in afterbody. Using MMG(Mathematical Modelling Group) model, we analyzed hydrodynamic and MMG experimetnal coefficidnts used to search sensitivities and to estimate ship's manoeuvrability, adn the results are performed by the regression analysis of principle parameters. We varified them to analyze ship's manoeubbrability , had simulate manoeubrability to check revised MMG model and compared them wiht Inoue's method. the result of PMM test and sea trial. Then it is found that the revised method can predict the maneuverability more accurately even for an unstable ship.

This paper presents the results of prediction of maneuverability of KCS about 4 degree of freedom(DOF) including roll motion. The prediction is carried out by CPMC captive model test. The CPMC(Computerized Planar Motion Carriage) with captive model test equipment including roll moment gage is installed at Ocean Engineering Tank of MOERI. KCS is the container ship open to the world by MOERI. To predict the 4 DOF maneuverability of a ship some tests with roll angle are conducted. And the prediction results of maneuverability by simulation are compared with the results of free running model test. The simulation results agree well with those of free running model tests.

Recently, ship owners have been requiring the assessment of the maneuverability of twin-screw ships under mechanical failures. Because this kind of assessment has not yet been conducted, it is necessary to study the types of machinery failures that can significantly affect the maneuverability of a ship, and to construct a procedure to simulate the maneuvering behavior under such failures. In this paper, the sole focus is the steering system failure from among the variety of failure types, and the maneuvering behavior of the ship under the single rudder failure is simulated for an investigation of the unique characteristics. First, the mathematical model for the twin-screw container ship is verified by comparing the simulated results for the $35^{\circ}$ turning test, $10^{\circ}/10^{\circ}$ zigzag test, and $20^{\circ}/20^{\circ}$ zigzag test under the normal operating condition with those obtained from free running model tests. After the IMO maneuvering tests are additionally simulated under the single rudder failure, the results are reviewed to investigate the maneuvering characteristics that are due to the failure. Further, the $35^{\circ}/35^{\circ}$ zigzag test and the $35^{\circ}$ turning test are simulated to additionally investigate the effects of the single rudder failure on the steering and turning abilities.

Recently, ship owners are requiring an assessment of sailing safety of a ship from an analysis considering maneuverability and environmental loads etc. In this paper, we propose a new approach to assess sailing safety by considering the prescribed parameters. The concept of sailing safety is developed from DP capability analysis and is based on the maneuvering simulations. While the ship is continuously disturbed due to irregular environmental loads during the simulations, it is steered to keep its course along the way points assumed along a straight path. After relative distances between four edges of the ship and allowable safety boundaries are calculated for 3 hours, the minimum values are obtained. The minimum distances are marked on a polar chart and we call this a quantified safe operation judgment chart which indicates quantified sailing safety.

Up to now, it has been common to treat the maneuvering motion of a ship as a 3-degree-freedom motion i.e. surge, sway and yaw on the sea surface, for the simplicity and mathematical calculation, and it is quite acceptable in the practical point of view. Meanwhile, considering the maneuverability of a ship under the special conditions such as in irregular waves, in wind or at high speed with small GM value, it is required that roll effect must be considered in the equation of ship motion. In this paper the author tried to build up the 4-degree-freedom motion equation by adding roll. And then, applying the M.M.G.'s mathematical model and with captive model test results the roll-coupled hydrodynamic derivatives were found. With these the author could make some simulating program for turning and zig-zag steering. Through the computer simulations, the effect of roll to the ship maneuver became clear. The effect of the wind force to the maneuverability was also found. Followings are such items that was found. 1) When roll is coupled in the maneuvering motion, the directional stability becomes worse and the turning diameter becomes smaller as roll becomes smaller as roll becomes larger. 2) When maneuver a ship in the wind, the roll becomes severe and the directional stability becomes worse. 3) When a ship turns to the starboard side, the wind blowing from 90 degree direction to starboard causes the largest roll and the largest turning diameter, and the wind from other direction doesn't change the turning diameter. 4) When a ship is travelling with a constant speed with rudder amidship, if steady wind blows from one direction, the ship turns toward that wind. This phenomenon is observed in the actual seaways.
An accurate method of estimating ship maneuverability needs to be developed to evaluate precisely and improve the maneuverability of ships according to the water depth. In order to estimate maneuverability by a mathematical model. The hydrodynamic forces acting on a ship hull and the flow field around the ship in maneuvering motion need to be estimated. The ship speed new the berth is very low and the fluid flow around a ship hull is unsteady. So, the transient fluid motion should be considered to estimate the drag force acting on the ship hull. In the low speed and short time lateral motion, the vorticity is created by the body and grow up in the acceleration stage and the velocity induced by the vorticity affect to the body in deceleration stage. For this kind of problem, CFD is considered as a goof tool to understand the phenomena. In this paper, the 2D CFD code is used for basic consideration of the phenomena to solve the flow in the cross section of the ship considering the ship is slender and the water depth is large enough. The flow fields Added and hydrodynamic forces for the some prescribed motions are computed and compared with the preliminary experiment results. The comparison of the force with measurement is shown a fairly good agreement in tendency. The 3D Potential Calculation based on the Hess & Smith Theory is employed to predict the surge, sway added mass and yaw added moment of inertia of hydrodynamic coefficients for M/V ESSO OSAKA according to the water depth. The results are also compared with experimental data. Finally, the sway added mass of hydrodynamic coefficients for T/S HANNARA is suggested in each water depth.

An outdoor free-running model test system was designed for assessing ship maneuverability with test uncertainty. The test model was a surface combatant of tumblehome hull geometry. The straight forward tests were conducted first to obtain the relationship between the propeller revolution rate and advance speed. During the outdoor tests, the propeller revolution rate to achieve a certain Froude number condition was higher than that in the indoor free-running model tests. Turning circle and zigzag tests for evaluating ship maneuverability criteria were carried out at the propeller revolution rate determined by the straight forward test results. The random and systematic standard uncertainties of maneuvering criteria were obtained by repeated tests and comparison with the indoor free-running model test results, respectively. The test uncertainty was largely dominated by the systematic standard uncertainty, while the random standard uncertainty was small with good repeatability.

The ships are turning for the purpose of collision avoidence and change of course. It is possible that ships have capsizing accident when improper loading of cargo and excessive use rudder angle in turning. It is difficult for navigation officers to recognize the danger of heeling during a turn, because the dynamic state of the ship changes in real time. Thus, in this study, ship's heeling angle was predicted during turning using the maneuverability indices estimated from the ship's autopilot. The maneuverability indices estimated through the Kalman filter of Autopilot is real-time predictable. The turning radius was obtained from the estimated Index of turining ability and calculations of the heeling angle were possible in turning. It is intended to be used as a basic data on the prevention of danger heeling angle during turning.
