  • This paper deals with the development of bonded joints for fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) hull structures using moulding-in concept. Focus is placed on bonded in-plane connections between two adjacent panels that could form the boundaries of hull structural module. Traditional construction in FRP hull structures requires the construction of a mould, usually from steel or aluminium. In this construction the FRP materials are laid in the mould, and resin is saturated, and then the structural member is cured. This is expensive since it involves the fabrication of metal hull mould for every different hull type, which is sacrificed after the production of the FRP ship. One way of encouraging greater use of FRP in ship construction is to investigate the possible construction of FRP hull structures in a similar manner to metallic ships, that is in terms of blocks or modules. Such a manner of construction would eliminate the need for expensive hull moulds permitting greater flexibility in the construction of FRP ships. The main issue then would be the design and construction of adequate bonded connections between adjacent panels. To fulfill this object, the simplified and automated way of manufacturing joint edge shapes for bonded joints is developed, and their structural assessment is performed in both experimentally and numerically.

  • With the development of artificial intelligence, artificial intelligence is being introduced to automate systems throughout the industry. In the maritime industry, artificial intelligence is being applied step by step, through the paradigm of autonomous ships. In line with this trend, ABS and DNV have published guidelines for autonomous vessels. However, there is a possibility that the risk of artificial intelligence has not been sufficiently considered, as the classification guidelines describe the requirements from the perspective of ship operation and marine service. Thus in this study, using the standards established by the ISO/ IEC JTC1/SC42 artificial intelligence division, classification requirements are classified as the causes of risk, and a measure that can evaluate risks through the combination of risk causes and artificial intelligence metrics want to use. Through the combination of the risk causes of artificial intelligence proposed in this study and the characteristics to evaluate them, it is thought that it will be beneficial in defining and identifying the risks arising from the introduction of artificial intelligence into the marine system. It is expected that it will enable the creation of more detailed and specific safety requirements for autonomous ships.

  • Marine accidents due to a loss of stability, have been gradually increasing over the last decade. Measures must be taken on the roll reduction of a ship. Amongst the measures, building an anti-roll tank in a ship is recognized as the most simple and effective way to reduce the roll motion. Therefore, this study aims to develop a computational model for a U-tube type anti-roll tank and to validate it by experiment. In particular, to validate the developed computational model, the height of the free surface in the tank was measured in the experiment. To develop a computational model, the mesh dependency test was carried out. Further, the effects of a turbulence model, time step size, and the number of iterations on the numerical solution were analyzed. In summary, a U-tube type anti-roll tank simulation had to be performed accurately with conditions of a realizable k-𝜖 turbulence model, 10-2s time step size, and 15 iterations. In validation, the two cases of measured data from the experiment were compared with the numerical results. In the present study, STAR-CCM+ (ver. 17.02), a RANS-based commercial solver was used.

  • Welding is essential in ship production since welding is very popular method for joining two or more metals. However, welding causes residual stress and distortion and these give a bad influence to the structure strength and assembly of ship blocks. Therefore, prediction and treatment of residual stress and distortion is a key to accuracy control in shipyard. In this paper, a computational procedure, based on thermal-elastic-plastic 3-dimensional FEA, has been suggested to simulate butt and fillet welding process. In the simulation process, temperature distribution at each time step is obtained by heat transfer analysis and then thermal deformation analysis is done with obtained temperature distributions to find the residual stress and distortion. In heat transfer analysis, enthalpy method is used to realize phase change at melting temperature. Also element birth and death method is used to simulate adding of weld metal in both heat transfer analysis and thermal elastic plastic analysis. The proposed procedure is verified by related researches and the results show good agreement with those of related researches.

  • This paper describes the modification of hull bottom for the air lubrication technique to the passenger boat in service at the Chung-Ju lake, which has a large beam-draft ratio. From numerical analysis of 2-D cavity problem by potential theory, the cavity shape, length and the pressure in cavity are estimated for the simplified geometry of hull bottom, and the non-dimensional parameters affecting air cavity phenomena are investigated. Extensive resistance tests for the model ship which has variation of step height and side strip have been performed to investigate the formation of air cavity and the drag reduction effectiveness. And also, the development of attached cavity to the bottom were observed from the flat bottom made by transparent acrylic plate. From this survey on the modification of bottom shape and the air lubrication technique, the total resistance of model ship could be reduced by about 25% at the design speed compared to the proto type hull form.

  • As the automation of ship production system proliferates, it is unavoidable to move the real machinery, facility, application software, and virtual environment from the heterogeneous data environment to the integrated one. However, it is a prevailing situation that each component operates under the different environment, due to the inability of interchanging the data in a structured manner between the components. The issue is obstacles to improvement of the application system. To facilitate seamless exchange of data among the manufacturing systems, STEP, PDML, and XML has been tried by other studies. This study has investigated how XML data can be applied to exchange the data among the ship production system components. XML data is applied to the forming shop in shipyard to overcome the present difficulties on sharing and exchanging of the information. An example of forming information is represented by XML to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed approach. In addition, an application of XML information applicable to virtual factory and electronic work order sheet is included.

  • At the initial design stage, for rapid evaluation of strength of ship structures, finite element analysis using beam elements is carried out in general. In beam modeling of ship structures, brackets are usually represented by rigid elements to simplify the analysis. Extent of rigid ends, which is called as a span point, can be determined from the three kinds of view points, i.e., bending, shearing and axial deformation. In this paper, a 2-dimensional novel beam element is developed and a method to replace the 3-dimensional analysis with 2-dimensional analysis is proposed. The developed novel beam element named rigid-ended beam element can consider the effect of three kinds of span points within one element, which was impossible in modeling with the ordinary beam element. Calculated results for the portal frame using the rigid-ended beam element agree with the results using membrane elements. And also, the proposed semi 3-dimensional analysis method which includes two step analysis using influence coefficients shows good accuracy. Structural analysis using the rigid-ended beam element and the semi 3-dimensional method is revealed to have good computing efficiency due to unnecessity of elements corresponding to the brackets and simplification of 3-dimensional analysis.

  • This paper deals with the vibration absorbers of gravitational and centrifugal pendulum types for vibration controls of ship's substructures such as radarmasts, bridgewings and funnels. The mathematical model of such a vibrating system with an absorber is described as a 2 degree of freedom system and an efficient formulation for optimum design of the absorber is presented. For investigation applicability of the two types of the absorbers to a structure system, numerical calculations and experiments hove been performed with variation of mass ratios for each type. According to the results of investigations, the vibration absorber of gravitational type proved to be more useful and efficient than one of centrifugal pendulum type in a view point of mass ratio.

  • Since the middle of 1950's when sea transportation service by container ship was established, containerization has been rapidly spread over the world with realization of intermodalism, and becomes an index of economy growth of a country. Our country has established Pusan Container Terminal at Pusan harbour in 1978 in step with worldwide trend of containerization, and is constructing New Container Terminal at Pusan outharbour which will be completed in 1990. This paper aims to make a quantitative analysis of the Pusan Container Terminal system through the computer simulation, especially focusing on its subsystems such as ship stevedoring system, storage system and transfer system. First, the capacity of various subsystems are evaluated and it is checked whether the current operation is being performed effectively through the computer simulation. Secondly, the suggestion is presented to improve the operation by considering the throughput that Pusan Container Terminal will have to accept until 1990, when New Container Terminal will be completed. The results are as follows ; 1) As the inefficiency is due to the imbalance between various subsystems at Pusan Container Terminal on the basis of about 1.2 million TEU of container traffic, transfer equipment level must be up to 33% for transfer crane, and free period must be reduced into 4/5 days for export/import. 2) On the basis of about 1.4 million TEU of container traffic, transfer equipment level must be up to $12\%$ for gantry crane, $11\%$ for straddle carrier and $66\%$ for transfer crane, and free period must be reduced into 3/4 days for export/import. 3) On the basis of about 1.7 million TEU of container traffic, transfer equipment level must be up to $25\%$ for gantry crane, $28\%$ for straddle carrier and $100\%$ for transfer crane, and free period must be reduced into 3/4 days for export/import. 4) On the basis of about 2 million TEU of container traffic, transfer equipment level must be up to $25\%$ for gantry crane, $30\%$ for straddle carrier and $110\%$ for transfer crane, and free period must be reduced into 2/3 days for export/import, and it is necessary to enlarge storage yard.
