Generally, the girder spacing of the two-girder composite bridge is from 5m up to 15m. To ensure the structural safety according to Korean Bridge Design Specification, the deck depth should be from 33 cm upto 73 cm. Using the transversal prestressing strands in concrete deck, we can reduce its depth about 10%. However, there is little experience on the design and construction of prestressed concrete(PSC) decks in Korea. This paper focuses on the behaviors of PSC deck. A literature survey is performed widely. Considering the characteristics of the two-girder bridge and the construction conditions in Korea, a cast-in-place PSC deck is recommended for the two-girder bridge with 6m girder spacing. To examine its structural behaviors and safety, three partial model deck specimens(3 m$\times$5 m) with real scale are fabricated md tested. One(PS34-RS) is 34cm depth with the stiffness restraint in longitudinal edges for simulating the real bridge deck. Another(PS34-NS) is same depth without the stiffness restraint, and the other(PS28-NS) is 28cm depth with the stiffness restraint. Under the static patch loading, each specimen had a larger ultimate flexural strength than the design value. Specimens with the stiffness restraint (PS34-RS and PS28-RS) showed the punching shear failure mode and specimen without that(PS34-NS) showed the flexural failure mode.
The Pre-loading method has been widely used for the soft ground stabilization but long construction times and the transport of large quantities of fill material are required. To shorten the construction periods, the vertical drain method is generally applied simultaneously. But the high costs of the fill materials along with environmental damages remain as the main difficulties to apply this method. Therefore, a complimentary way to reduce both the height of the embankment and the consolidation time is needed. In this study, the electro-osmosis method, which is able to shorten the consolidation time and minimize the damage of the environment, was performed with a model test. The results show that as the voltage increases the consolidation settlements, consolidation drainage and shear strength also increase while the water content decreases.
Paper drain method is one of the methods used for the improvement of soft clay as hydraulic fill sites or the seaside industrial complex. This method adopts a card board as the drain materials instead of sand piles in sand drain method. In this paper 3 types of drain board are used to fond out the characteristics of consolidation by vacuum consolidation model test. So does the no drain board test. This test causes the reduction of pore water pressure to promote the settlement without change of ground water level. Conclusively, the vacuum consolidation shows 3-dimensional behaviors and pore water pressure reaches a negative value in a short time. In addition, it is expected to have a comparatively good consolidation effect using non -woven board, and vacuum loading results in increasing the shear strength at the bottom and top of call layers.
Cyclic loading due to traffic, excavation and blasting causes microcrack growth in rocks over long period of time, and this type of loading often causes rock to fail at a lower stress than its monotonically determined strength. Thus, the crack growth and coalescence under cyclic loading are important for the long-term stability problems. In this research, experiments using gypsum as a model material for rock are carried out to investigate crack propagation and coalescence under monotonic and cyclic loading. Both monotonic and cyclic tests have a similar wing crack initiation position, wing crack initiation angle, cracking sequence and coalescence type. Three types of crack coalescence were observed; Type I, II and III. Type I coalescence occurs due to a shear crack and Type II coalescence occurs through one wing or tension crack. For Type III, coalescence occurs through two wing or tension cracks. Fatigue cracks appear in cyclic tests. Two types of fatigue crack initiation directions, coplanar and horizontal directions, are observed.
FMLC(Fiber-Metal Laminate Composites) is a new structural material combining thin metal laminate with adhesive fiber prepreg, it nearly include all the advantage of metallic materials, for example: good plasticity, impact resistance, processibility, light weight and excellent fatigue properties. This research studied the optimum design of the FMLC subject to various loading conditions using genetic algorithm. The finite element method based on the shear deformation theory was used for the analysis of FMLC. Tasi-Hill failure criterion and Miser yield criterion were taken as fitness functions of the fiber prepreg and the metal laminate, respectively. The design variables were fiber orientation angles. In genetic algorithm, the tournament selection and the uniform crossover method were used. The elitist model was also used to be effective evolution strategy and the creeping random search method was adopted in order to approach a solution with high accuracy. Optimization results were given for various loading conditions and compared with CFRP(Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic). The results show that the FMLC is more excellent than the CFRP in point and uniform loading conditions and it is more stable to unexpected loading because the deviation of failure index is smaller than that of CFRP.

The realistic modeling of the beam-column semi-rigid connection in steel frames attracted the attention of many researchers in the past for the seismic analysis of semi-rigid frames. Comparatively less studies have been made to investigate the behavior of steel frames with semi-rigid connections under different types of earthquake. Herein, the seismic behavior of semi-rigid steel frames is investigated under both far and near-field earthquakes. The semi-rigid connection is modeled by the multilinear plastic link element consisting of rotational springs. The kinematic hysteresis model is used to define the dynamic behavior of the rotational spring, describing the nonlinearity of the semi-rigid connection as defined in SAP2000. The nonlinear time history analysis (NTHA) is performed to obtain response time histories of the frame under scaled earthquakes at three PGA levels denoting the low, medium and high-level earthquakes. The other important parameters varied are the stiffness and strength parameters of the connections, defining the degree of semi-rigidity. For studying the behavior of the semi-rigid frame, a large number of seismic demand parameters are considered. The benchmark for comparison is taken as those of the corresponding rigid frame. Two different frames, namely, a five-story frame and a ten-story frame are considered as the numerical examples. It is shown that semi-rigid frames prove to be effective and beneficial in resisting the seismic forces for near-field earthquakes (PGA ≈ 0.2g), especially in reducing the base shear to a considerable extent for the moderate level of earthquake. Further, the semi-rigid frame with a relatively weaker beam and less connection stiffness may withstand a moderately strong earthquake without having much damage in the beams.

Breakaway support for small signs of size $0.293\;m^2{\sim}0.360\;m^2$ using indented tube type bolt of D12 mm with 6 mm inner diameter has been developed and the structural strength of the support system for the wind load was verified through static shear and tension tests. One important value in understanding the dynamic behavior of sign post and impact vehicle is the fracture energy of the sign support. In this study, fracture energy needed to break the sign support was estimated by pendulum test and computer simulation using LS-DYNA program. Support system composed of 3 indented bolts was found to sustain the 43.1 kg$\sim$51.2 kg wind load safely. Fracture energy for one indented bolt was measured as 163.3J from the pendulum test, and was calculated as 153J from the LS-DYNA simulation. The closeness between these two values verified the validity of the simulation model.
A general stiffener element which includes transverse shear deformation is formulated using the p-version finite element method. Hierarchic C/sup o/-shape functions, derived from Integrals of Legendre polynomials, are used to define the assembled stiffness matrix of the stiffener with respect to the local reference frame is transformed to the plate reference system by applying the appropriate transformation matrices in order to insure compatibility of displacements at the junction of the stiffener and plate. The transformation matrices which account for the orientation and the eccentricity effects of the stiffener with respect to the plate reference axes are used to find local behavior at the junction of the stiffener and the relative contributions of the plate and stiffener to the strength of the composite system. The results obtained by the p-version finite element method are comared with the results in literatures, especially those by the h-version finite element analysis program, MICROFEAP-II.
The flexural behaviour of steel beams significantly affects the structural performance of the steel frame structures. In particular, the flexural overstrength (namely the ratio between the maximum bending moment and the plastic bending strength) that steel beams may experience is the key parameter affecting the seismic design of non-dissipative members in moment resisting frames. The aim of this study is to present a new formulation of flexural overstrength factor for steel beams by means of artificial neural network (NN). To achieve this purpose, a total of 141 experimental data samples from available literature have been collected in order to cover different cross-sectional typologies, namely I-H sections, rectangular and square hollow sections (RHS-SHS). Thus, two different data sets for I-H and RHS-SHS steel beams were formed. Nine critical prediction parameters were selected for the former while eight parameters were considered for the latter. These input variables used for the development of the prediction models are representative of the geometric properties of the sections, the mechanical properties of the material and the shear length of the steel beams. The prediction performance of the proposed NN model was also compared with the results obtained using an existing formulation derived from the gene expression modeling. The analysis of the results indicated that the proposed formulation provided a more reliable and accurate prediction capability of beam overstrength.
Reinforced concrete structures are widely used in civil engineering projects around the world in different designs. Due to the great evolution in computational equipment and numerical methods, structural analysis has become more and more reliable, and in turn more closely approximates reality. Thus among the many numerical methods used to carry out these types of analyses, the finite element method has been highlighted as an optimized tool option, combined with the non-linear and linear analysis techniques of structures. In this paper, the behavior of reinforced concrete beams was analyzed in two different configurations: i) with welding and ii) conventionally lashed stirrups using annealed wire. The structures were subjected to normal and tangential forces up to the limit of their bending resistance capacities to observe the cracking process and growth of the concrete structure. This study was undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of welded wire fabric as shear reinforcement in concrete prismatic beams under static loading conditions. Experimental analysis was carried out in order compare the maximum load of both configurations, the experimental load-time profile applied in the first configuration was used to reproduce the same loading conditions in the numerical simulations. Thus, comparisons between the numerical and experimental results of the welded frame beam show that the proposed model can estimate the concrete strength and failure behavior accurately.
