  • In the present work, the two-back stress model is proposed and continuum damage mechanics (CDM) is incorporated into the plastic constitutive relation in order to describe the plastic deformation localization and the damage evolution in a deforming continuum body. Coupling between damage mechanics and isothermal rate independent plasticity is performed using the kinematic hardening rule, which in turn is formulated by combining the nonlinear Armstrong-Frederick rule and the Phillips rule. The numerical analyses are carried out within h deformation theory. It is noted that the damage evolution within a work piece accelerates the plastic deformation localization such that the material with lower hardening exponent results in a rapid shear band formation. Moreover, the results from the numerical analysis reflected closely with the micro-structures around the fractured regime. The effects of the various hardening parameters on deformation localization are also investigated. As the nonlinear strain rate description in the back stress evolution becomes dominant, the strain localization becomes intensified as well as the damage evolution.

  • An inverse ferrofluid composed of micron sized polymethylmethacrylate particles dispersed in ferrofluid was used to investigate the effects of test duration times on determining the flow curves of these materials under constant magnetic field. The results showed that flow curves determined using low duration times were most likely not measuring the steady state rheological response. However, at longer duration times, which are expected to correspond more to steady state behaviour, we noticed the occurrence of plateau and decreasing flow curves in the shear rate range of $0.004\;s^{-1}$ to ${\sim}20\;s^{-1}$, which suggest the presence of nonhomogeneities and shear localization in the material. This behaviour was also reflected in the steady state results from shear start up tests performed over the same range of shear rates. The results indicate that care is required when interpreting flow curves obtained for inverse ferrofluids.

  • In the present, the formation of shear band under a simple shear deformation is investigated using a rate-independent elastic-plastic constitutive relations. Moreover, the strain gradient terms are incorporated to obtain a non-local plastic constitutive relation, which in turn represented using combined two-back stress hardening model. Then, the continuum damage model is also included to the proposed model. The post-localization behavior are studied by introducing a small imperfection in a work piece. The strain gradient affects the shear localization significantly such that the intensity of shear band decreases as the strain gradient coefficient increases when the J2 flow theory is employed.

  • As shear occurs along a soil-structure interface, a localized zone with a thickness of several grain diameters will develop in soil along the interface, forming an interfacial layer. In this paper, the behaviour of a soil-structure interface is studied numerically by modelling the plane shear of a granular layer bounded by rigid plates. The mechanical behaviour of the granular material is described with a micro-polar hypoplastic continuum model. Numerical results are presented to show the development of shear localization along the interface for shearing under conditions of constant normal pressure and constant volume, respectively. Evolution of the resistance on the surface of the bounding plate is considered with respect to the influences of grain rotation.

  • The effect of the initial packing structure on the plasticity of amorphous alloys was investigated by tracing the structural evolution of the amorphous solid inside a shear band. According to the molecular dynamics simulations, the structural evolution of the amorphous solids inside the shear band was more abrupt in the alloy with a higher initial packing density. Such a difference in the structural evolution within the shear band observed from the amorphous alloys with different initial packing density is believed to cause different degrees of shear localization, providing an answer to the fundamental question of why amorphous alloys show different plasticity. We clarify the structural origin of the plasticity of bulk amorphous alloys by exploring the microstructural aspects in view of the structural disordering, disorder-induced softening, and shear localization using molecular dynamics simulations based on the recently developed MEAM (modified embedded atom method) potential.

  • Elasto-plastic finite element analysis was carried out for analyzing the severe plastic deformation behavior of copper specimens during groove pressing. Deformation localization was studied in terms of strain variations along the longitudinal direction. Plastic strain is lower at the local interface between the shear and the flat regions, which receive very little shear during the pressing cycle. Strain localization is more intensified with the number of rove pressing cycles, although the average strain level increases.

  • Experiments have demonstrated that a moderate amount of Be added to $Zr_{57.5}Cu_{38.3}Al_{4.2}$ amorphous alloy enhances the plasticity of the alloy. In particular, $Zr_{54}Cu_{36}Al_{4}Be_{6}$ alloy exhibited 19% of strain to fracture along with a strength exceeding 2 GPa. Energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy conducted on the $Zr_{54}Cu_{36}Al_{4}Be_{6}$ alloy exhibited the presence of compositional modulation, indicating that nm-scale phase separation had occurred at local regions. In this study, the role played by the nm-scale phase separation on the plasticity was investigated in terms of structural disordering, structural softening and shear localization in order to better understand the structural origin of the enhanced plasticity shown by the developed alloy.

  • Based on the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion, a gradient-dependent plastic model that considers the strain-softening behavior is presented in this study. Both triaxial shear tests on conventional specimen and precut-specimen, which were obtained from an ancient landslide, are performed to plot the post-peak stress-strain entire-process curves. According to the test results of the soil strength, which reduces from peak to residual strength, the Mohr-Coulomb criterion that considers strain-softening under gradient plastic theory is deduced, where strength reduction depends on the hardening parameter and the Laplacian thereof. The validity of the model is evaluated by the simulation of the results of triaxial shear test, and the computed and measured curves are consistent and independent of the adopted mesh. Finally, a progressive failure of the ancient landslide, which was triggered by slide of the toe, is simulated using this model, and the effects of the strain-softening process on the landslide stability are discussed.

  • Localized shear band is investigated through the analysis of one-dimensional model for simple shearing deformation of thermally rate dependent material. Generally mesh size or interval of nodes play an important role in determining the overall flow behavior of the material. In order to observe these size effects we adapted non-local theory by including higher order strain gradients of the equivalent strain into the constitutive equation for the flow stress. for the ease of convergence and numerical stability the inplicit finite difference scheme is employed.
