  • Curved steel-concrete composite box girder has been widely adopted in urban overpasses and ramp bridges. In order to investigate its mechanical behavior under complicated and combined bending, shear and torsion load, two large-curvature composite box girders with interior angles of 25° and 45° were tested under static hogging moment. Based on the strain and deflection measurement on critical cross-sections during the static loading test, the failure mode, cracking behavior, load-displacement relationship, and strain distribution in the steel plate and rebar were investigated in detail. The test result showed the large-curvature composite box girders exhibited notable shear lag in the concrete slab and steel girder. Also, the constraint torsion and distortion effect caused the stress measured at the inner side of the composite beam to be notably higher than that of the outer side. The strain distribution in the steel web was approximately linear; therefore, the assumption that the plane section remains plane was approximately validated based on strain measurement at steel web. Furthermore, the full-process non-linear elaborate finite element (FE) models of the two specimens were developed based on commercial FE software MSC.MARC. The modeling scheme and constitutive model were illustrated in detail. Based on the comparison between the FE model and test results, the FE model effectively simulated the failure mode, the load-displacement curve, and the strain development of longitudinal rebar and steel girder with sufficient accuracy. The comparison between the FE model and the test result validated the accuracy of the developed FE model.

  • An overall feature to simulate composite behavior and to predict closed solution has been performed for the application to the stress analysis in a discontinuous composite solid. To obtain the internal field quantities of composite, the micromechanics analysis and finite element analysis (FEA) were implemented. For the numerical illustration, an aligned axisymmetric single fiber model has been employed to assess field quantities. Further, a micromechanics model to describe the elastic behavior of fiber or whisker reinforced metal matrix composites has been developed and the stress concentrations between reinforcements were investigated using the modified shear lag model with the comparions between reinforcements were investigated using the modified shear lag model with the comparison of finite element analysis (FEA). The rationale is based on the replacement of the matrix between fiber ends with the fictitious fiber to maintain the compatibility of displacement and traction. It was found that the new model gives a good agreement with FEA results in the small fiber aspect ratio regime as well as that in the large fiber aspect ratio regime. It was found that the proposed simulation methodology for stress analysis is applicable to the complicated inhomogeneous solid for the investigation of micromechanical behavior.

  • Guyed steel lattice towers (or guyed masts) are widely used for supporting antennas for telecommunications and broadcasting. This paper presents a numerical study on the static and dynamic response of guyed towers. Three-dimensional nonlinear finite-element models are used to simulate the response. Through performing static pushover analyses and free-vibration (modal) analyses, the effect of different bracing configurations is investigated. In addition, seismic analyses are performed on towers of different heights to study the influence of earthquake excitation time-lag (or the earthquake travel distance between tower anchors) and antenna weight on the seismic response of guyed towers. The results show that the inclusion of time lag in the seismic analysis of guyed towers can influence shear and moment distribution along the height of the mast. Moreover, it is found that the lateral response is insensitive to bracing configurations. The results also show that, depending on the mast height, an increased antenna weight can reduce the tower maximum base shear while other response quantities, such as cables tension force are found to be insensitive to variation in the antenna weight.

  • Components manufactured from composite materials are frequently subjected to superimposed mechanical and thermal loadings during their operating service. Both types of loadings may cause fracture and failure of composite structures. When composite cross-ply laminates of type [$0_m/90_n]_s$ are subjected to uni-axial tensile loading, different types of damage are set-up and developed such as matrix cracking: transverse and longitudinal cracks, delamination between disoriented layers and broken fibers. The development of these modes of damage can be detrimental for the stiffness of the laminates. From the experimental point of view, transverse cracking is known as the first mode of damage. In this regard, the objective of the present paper is to investigate the effect of transverse cracking in cross-ply laminate under thermo-mechanical degradation. A Finite Element (FE) simulation of damage evolution in composite crossply laminates of type [$0_m/90_n]_s$ subjected to uni-axial tensile loading is carried out. The effect of transverse cracking on the cross-ply laminate strength under thermo-mechanical degradation is investigated numerically. The results obtained by prediction of the numerical model developed in this investigation demonstrate the influence of the transverse cracking on the bearing capacity and resistance to damage as well as its effects on the variation of the mechanical properties such as Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio and coefficient of thermal expansion. The results obtained are in good agreement with those predicted by the Shear-lag analytical model as well as with the obtained experimental results available in the literature.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of adding fibers to concrete and the distribution rate of the porosity on the interfacial stresses of the beams strengthened with various types of functionally graded porous (FGP) plate. Toward this goal, the beams strengthened with FGP plate were considered and subjected to uniform loading. Three types of beams are considered namely RC beam, RC beam reinforced with metal fibers (RCFM) and RC beam reinforced with Alfa fibers (RCFA). From an analytical development, shear and normal interfacial stresses along the length of the FGP plates were obtained. The accuracy and validity of the proposed theoretical formula are confirmed by the others theoretical results. The results showed clearly that adding fibers to concrete and the distribution rate of the porosity have significant influence on the interfacial stresses of the beams strengthened with FGP plates. Finally, parametric studies are carried out to demonstrate the effect of the mechanical properties and thickness variations of FGP plate, concrete and adhesive on interface debonding, we can conclude that, This research is helpful for the understanding on mechanical behavior of the interface and design of the FRP-RC hybrid structures.

  • To move forward in large steps rather than in small increments, the community would benefit from a systematic and comprehensive database of multi-scale composites and measured properties, driven by comprehensive studies with a full range of types of fiber-reinforced polymers. The multi-scale hierarchy is a promising chemical approach that provides superior performance in synergistically integrated microstructured fibers and nanostructured materials in composite applications. Achieving high-efficiency thermal conductivity and mechanical properties with a simple surface treatment on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) is important for multi-scale composites. The main purpose of the project is to introduce ozone-treated SWCNTs between an epoxy matrix and basalt fibers to improve mechanical properties and thermal conductivity by enhancing dispersion and interfacial adhesion. The obvious advantage of this approach is that it is much more effective than the conventional approach at improving the thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of materials under an equivalent load, and shows particularly significant improvement for high loads. Such an effort could accelerate the conversion of multi-scale composites into high performance materials and provide more rational guidance and fundamental understanding towards realizing the theoretical limits of thermal and mechanical properties.

  • Based on a 405m high super-tall building, the influence of outriggers, different shapes and layouts of structural plane and elevation on structural efficiency under lateral forces is studied in this paper. A calculation formula concerning the structural efficiency is given. The study shows that structural efficiency can be improved by triangulating the plane shape, using mega columns, the peripherization of the plane layout, tapering the elevation shape and setting bracing structure in the elevation. The arrangement of outriggers between the core tube and flange frame can reduce the shear lag effect in order to improve structural efficiency. The essence of improving structural efficiency of super-tall buildings is to maximize the plane bending stiffness and to make its deformation approach to plane section assumption.

  • This paper presents a careful theoretical investigation into interfacial stresses in composite aluminum-slab reinforced concrete beam bonded by a prestressed hybrid carbon-glass composite material. The model is based on equilibrium and deformations compatibility requirements in and all parts of the strengthened beam, i.e., the aluminum beam, the slab reinforced concrete, the hybrid carbon-glass composite plate and the adhesive layer. The theoretical predictions are compared with other existing solutions. Numerical results from the present analysis are presented both to demonstrate the advantages of the present solution over existing ones and to illustrate the main characteristics of interfacial stress distributions. It is shown that the stresses at the interface are influenced by the material and geometry parameters of the composite beam. This research is helpful for the understanding on mechanical behaviour of the interface and design of the hybrid structures.

  • The stiffness reduction of cross-ply composite laminates featuring a transverse cracking and delamination within the mid-layer is predicted through utilization of a modified shear-lag model, incorporating a stress perturbation function. Good agreement is obtained by comparing the prediction models and experimental data. The material characteristics of the composite are affected by fluctuations in temperature and transient moisture concentration distribution in desorption case, based on a micro-mechanical model of laminates. The transient and non-uniform moisture concentration distribution induces a stiffness reduction. The obtained results demonstrate the stiffness degradation dependence on factors such as cracks density, thickness ratio and environmental conditions. The present study underscores the significance of comprehending the degradation of material properties in the failure progression of laminates, particularly in instances of extensive delamination growth.
