  • The purpose of this paper is to understand the shear characteristics of the shear connectors embedded into light weight concrete. This paper tried to confirm the validity of the finite element method(FEM) through the comparative study between the previous study results and FEM analysis, and evaluated the shear strength of shear connector and current design codes(AISC-LRFD and Eurocode 4) according to the variation of compressive strength of light weight concrete. This paper resulted that the shear strength of connector embedded into light weight concrete closely agreed to the one of shear connector by Eurocode 4 based on the results of the FEM analysis.

  • A perforated shear connector group is commonly used to transfer shear in steel-concrete composite structures when the traditional shear stud connection is not strong enough. The multi-hole perforated shear connector demonstrates a more complicated behavior than the single connector. The internal force distribution in a specific multi-hole perforated shear connector group has not been thoroughly studied. This study focuses on the load-carrying capacity and shear force distribution of multi-hole perforated shear connectors in steel-concrete composite structures. ANSYS is used to develop a three-dimensional finite element model to simulate the behavior of multi-hole perforated connectors. Material and geometric nonlinearities are considered in the model to identify the failure modes, ultimate strength, and load-slip behavior of the connection. A three-layer model is introduced and a closed-form solution for the shear force distribution is developed to facilitate design calculations. The shear force distribution curve of the multi-hole shear connector is catenary, and the efficiency coefficient must be considered in different limit states.

  • In a composite beam, a shear connector is installed to resist the horizontal shear on an interface between steel beams and reinforced concrete slabs. The steel-wire-integrated deck plate slab is commonly used at the wide section beam. Then vertical bars are installed at the upper wire of the ends of the steel truss girder to ensure safety during the construction. The new type of shear connector is made of deformed bar and steel plates, and must function as vertical bars but must have higher shear capacity. This paper examines the ways to develop and utilize this new shear connector. From the push-out experiments, a shear connector made of a continuous deformed bar and steel plate showed a higher shear capacity and ductility than a ${\phi}16$ stud connector, and functioned as a vertical bar.

  • Shear connector is the element which resist in the horizontal shear force between steel and concrete of composite members and the stud bolt is often used because of its constructional convenience and serviceability. Although the push-out test is the most common method to evaluate shear slip behaviour, it is suitable for only room temperature conditions. In this study, we investigated about shear force, temperature distribution and slip displacement of shear connector in high temperature through the modified push-out test with electronic furnace invented for steel part heating.

  • Perforated shear connectors currently used in composite steel and concrete structures are described and evaluated. Modifications of the perforated connector suitable for common use injavascript:confirm_mark('abe', '1'); civil and bridge engineering are proposed. The connectors were tested in laboratories of CTU Prague for shear load capacity. Push tests of connectors with 32 mm openings and with 60 mm openings, both in normal and lightweight concrete of different strength characteristics and with different transverse reinforcement, were carried out. The experimental study also dealt with the connector height and parallel arrangement of two connectors and their influence on shear resistance. While extensive tests with static loading were carried out, fatigue tests under repeated loading are still in progress. After statistical evaluation of the experimental results and comparisons with other available data the authors developed reasonable shear resistance formulas for all proposed arrangements.

  • A shear connection in composite bridges with precast decks has considerable characteristics different from cast-in-place deck bridges such as shear pocket and bedding layer. Thus, it is necessary to build design basis of the shear connector in precast decks through the experiments. In order to estimate fatigue life of shear connector in precast deck bridges, push-out fatigue tests were conducted with parameter, bedding layer thickness. As a result of the tests, failure modes of shear connector were observed. Consequently, empirical S-N curve equations of stud shear connector in precast deck bridges were proposed in this paper.

  • An experimental study was carried out to evaluate the shear performance at the interface composed of structural laminates and concrete. The main variables are the number of CLT layers and the shape of the shear connector. The number of CLT layers consisted of 3 and 5 layers. A total of 6 test specimens for shear performance evaluation were prepared in the form of a shear connector, a direct screw type and a vertically embedded type. As a result of the experiment, similar behavior was shown in all specimens, regardless of the number of layers, including direct screw type (SC series) and vertically embedded type (VE series). The behavior at the joint surface was damaged due to the occurrence of initial shear cracks, expansion of shear groove cracks, and splaying at the interface after the maximum load. After the maximum load, the shear strength decreased gradually due to the effect of the shear connector. It can be seen that the shear strength of all specimens is determined by shear and compression stress failure of concrete at the interface of the notch joint.

  • This study evaluated a shear capacity of confined socket-bolt (CSB) shear connector developed for utilizing cast in placed pile (CIP) as a permanent underground wall. The push-out tests were performed in the specimens with different CIP types, CSB shear connector types, L/d, and concrete compressive strengths of concrete pile, and with or without waterproofing at interfaces between CIP and underground wall. Test results showed that the specimens with a H-shaped pile were fractured in the CSB shear connector, while the fracture concentrated in the concrete part of the specimens with a reinforced concrete pile was alleviated as the compressive strength of the concrete pile increased, resulting in the severe fracture of CSB shear connector. The maximum shear capacities of the specimens with high strength bolts and reinforcing bars used as CSB shear connector were approximately 1.22 and 1.20 times higher than those of the specimens with a H-shaped pile, respectively, and 1.10 and 1.16 times higher than those of the specimens with a reinforced concrete pile, respectively. Meanwhile, the maximum shear capacity was not significantly affected by the embedding length of the CSB shear connector and overlapping length of reinforcing bar. The predicted shear capacities calculated from the KDS standards were lower than the measured values of all specimens tested in this study.

  • The numerical analysis and the experiment was performed to investigate the influences of shear connector on shear resistance capability. The numerical analysis's results should that the H/B ratio of shear key is more effective than angle of shear key against shear strength and shear behavior, and it is more desirable to use a half of the H/B ratio of shear key. The specimen was made with same condition as AASHTO recommended. There model tests were performed under various form of shear key, number, arrangement reinforcement and condition using epoxy. As a result of the experiment, there is little difference(or there is no difference) between the case of using epoxy on shear connector and the unused case.
