Monotonic behavior of C and L shaped angle shear connectors within steel-concrete composite beams: an experimental investigation

  • Shear connectors are essential elements in the design of steel-concrete composite systems. These connectors are utilized to prevent the occurrence of potential slips at the interface of steel and concrete. The two types of shear connectors which have been recently employed in construction projects are C- and L-shaped connectors. In the current study, the behavior of C and L-shaped angle shear connectors is investigated experimentally. For this purpose, eight push-out tests were composed and subjected to monotonic loading. The load-slip curves and failure modes have been determined. Also, the shear strength of the connectors has been compared with previously developed relationships. Two failure modes of shear connectors were observed: 1) concrete crushing-splitting and 2) shear connector fracture. It was found that the L-shaped connectors have less shear strength compared to C-shaped connectors, and decreasing the angle leg size increases the shear strength of the C-shaped connectors, but decreases the relative ductility and strength of L-shaped connectors.

사다리꼴 형상 그루빙의 공항 활주로 적용성 평가 연구 (A Study on Evaluating the Applicability of Trapezoidal-shaped Grooves to Airport Runways)

  • This study is to evaluate the applicability and performance of trapezoidal-shaped grooves on domestic airport runways. For this, the constructability, drainage performance, and friction resistance characteristics of trapezoidal-shaped grooves compared to square-shaped grooves were evaluated through test construction on pavement at Incheon Airport. As a result of the test construction, the trapezoidal-shaped grooves satisfies the required geometry standards and tolerance, and secured a macrotexture that was 25% improved compared to the square-shaped grooves. It was confirmed that trapezoid-shaped grooves secured drainage performance of more than 7-9%, and surface friction performance improved compared to existing grooves when the surface of the pavement was wet as the test speed increased in the dry state. In addition, after trapezoidal-shaped grooves was installed on the RWY 16R/34L of Incheon Airport, the friction coefficient was 0.84, which satisfies the design level of the new runway surface of 0.82 at the test speed.

Effect of internal angles between limbs of cross plan shaped tall building under wind load

  • The present study revealed comparison the pressure distribution on the surfaces of regular cross plan shaped building with angular cross plan shaped building which is being transformed from basic cross plan shaped building through the variation of internal angles between limbs by $15^{\circ}$ for various wind incidence angle from $0^{\circ}$ to $180^{\circ}$ at an interval of $30^{\circ}$. In order to maintain the area same the limbs sizes are slightly increased accordingly. Numerical analysis has been carried out to generate similar nature of flow condition as per IS: 875 (Part -III):1987 (a mean wind velocity of 10 m/s) by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with help of ANSYS CFX ($k-{\varepsilon}$ model). The variation of mean pressure coefficients, pressure distribution over the surface, flow pattern and force coefficient are evaluated for each cases and represented graphically to understand extent of nonconformities due to such angular modifications in plan. Finally regular cross shaped building results are compared with wind tunnel results obtained from similar '+' shaped building study with similar flow condition. Reduction in along wind force coefficients for angular crossed shaped building, observed for various skew angles leads to develop lesser along wind force on building compared to regular crossed shaped building and square plan shaped building. Interference effect within the internal faces are observed in particular faces of building for both cases, considerably. Significant deviation is noticed in wind induced responses for angular cross building compared to regular cross shaped building for different direction wind flow.

  • A study on machining electrode for LEO(Light Emitted Diode) mold with shaped end-mill is presented. The electrode machining by shaped end-mill has been used for maximizing the productivity in manufacture of semiconductor mold. However, it has not been researched systematically for many difficulties such as the making of shaped end-mill, generation of tool path due to distinctive tool geometry, and so on. Tool path is generated on the shaped end-mill geometry and cutting force to provide accurate and efficient machining of electrode. The verification program can drive enhancement of productivity, selecting cutting conditions from experiment function of cutting force. Also, compensation of tooting and machina error can make the electrode accurate by modifying tool path. Therefore, the research on machining with shaped end-mill can contribute to enhancement of accuracy and productivity in building semiconductor mold.

  • The cross sections of structural walls have various shapes such as T, L, and H-shaped. The L-shaped walls frequently appear in the comer of the structural plans. There are a little researches on the structural performance of L-shaped walls subjected to hi-directional loads. L-shaped wall subjected to hi-directional loads might be failed due to high compressive stress in the corner of the wall. L-shaped wall subjected to bi-directional(45$^{\circ}$ direction) loads was failed by the compressive failure more possible than that of one-directional(0$^{\circ}$ direction) loads. Therefore, in this paper, Two L-shaped wall specimens are chosen and presented. One is LCU specimen subjected to the bi-directional loads, the other is LCX specimen subjected to the one-directional loads. Also, the experimental results compared with the analytical results from nonlinear FEM analysis.

십자형 연직배수재의 점성토지반 개량에의 적용성 (Applicability of Cross Shaped Drain to Soft Clay Improvement)

  • Applicability of the cross shaped drain in a soft clay ground is examined using the laboratory discharge capacity test, column consolidation test and 3-D numerical flow analysis. The equivalent diameter of the tested drains is back-calculated from the laboratory experiment and compared with those calculated from the formula suggested in the literature. The effective range of the cross shaped drain about the discharge capacity and coefficient of permeability is analyzed. The results of numerical analysis show that the cross shaped drain which has a cross-sectional area twice of the band shaped drain can reduce the consolidation time by 30% from that for the band shaped drain in a soft clay ground that K is over 1${\times}$10$\^$-7/cm/sec

A Simple Simulation of Parabola-Shaped Clouds in the Lee of a Low Bell-Shaped Mountain Using the ARPS

  • A three-dimensional linear model and the Advanced Regional Prediction System (ARPS) were used to simulate parabola-shaped disturbances and clouds in the lee of a bell-shaped mountain. The ARPS model was compared in the x-y plane against the linear model's analytic solution. Under similar conditions with the linear theory, the ARPS produced well-developed parabola-shaped mountain disturbances and confirmed the features are accounted for in the linear regime. A parabola-shaped cloud in the lee of an isolated bell-shaped mountain was successfully simulated in the ARPS after 6 hours of integration time with the prescribed initial and boundary conditions, as well as a microphysical scheme.

Experimental and analytical behavior of a prestressed U-shaped girder bridge

  • This paper presents an experimental and analytical investigation on the behavior of a U-shaped girder subjected to operation, cracking and ultimate loads. A full-scale destructive test was conducted on a U-shaped girder to study the cracking process, load-carrying capacity, failure mechanism and load-deformation relationships. Accordingly, the tested U-shaped girder was modeled using ANSYS and a non-linear element analysis was conducted. The investigation shows that the U-shaped girder meets the specified requirements of vertical stiffness, cracking and ultimate load capacity. Unfavorable torsional effect is tolerable during operation. However, compared with box girders, the U-shaped girder has a more transverse mechanical effect and longitudinal cracks are apt to occur in the bottom slab.

압축기용 S형 덕트 유동에 대한 수치해석적 연구 (Numerical Studies on the S-Shaped Duct Flow for Compressors)

  • This paper is concerned with the numerical analyses of an S-shaped duct for the inter-channel between compressor spools. For the compactness and lightweight of an engine, the length of the S-shaped duct is desired to be minimized. Shortening the S-shaped duct, however, flow separation is likely to occur. Numerical investigation using a three-dimensional Navier-Stokes flow solver was performed to determine the availability of the minimization of an S-shaped duct. Computations were performed introducing the experimental data as the inlet flow condition of the OGV in determining the minimum length of the S-shaped duct. Also, the leaning effect of the OGV which assists the flow to turn radially inward was studied adopting mixing-plane method to consider the rotor/OGV interaction.

  • In this study, the relation between the mtation which are usually caused by the creep of the contact wire, the bar geometry and the forces(wire tensions) for the triangle-shaped distribution bar and straight-shaped one in dependent tensioning device system is reviewed. According to the result a rotation of distribution bar in triangle-shaped one modifies the distribution of the tensions between the three wires hooked in a distribution bar. On the contrary, a rotation on the straight-shaped one leads to no tension distribution change. Therefore, to use the straight-shaped distribution bar instead of triangle-shaped one is recommended. In addition, the design contents of the distribution bar which will be used in electrification of Gyeongbu line are described in this paper.
