Shape Optimization for Reduction of Cogging Torque in Permanent Magnet Motor by Sensitivity Analysis (영구자석전동기의 코깅토오크저감을 위한 민감도에 의한 형상 최적화)

  • In order to reduce the cogging torque in a permanent magnet motor, a method to optimize the shape of permanent magnet and iron pole is presented. Sine the cogging torque comes from the irregular system energy variation according to the rotor position, system energy variation is taken as object function and the object function is minimized to optimize the shape. The positions of permanent magnet surface and iron pole surface are chosen as design parameters and sensitivity of object function with respect to the design parameter is calculated. The shape is changed according to sensitivity can be generated by methods that exploit the FEM formulation. A numerical example shows that the cogging torque is reduced to about 10% of the original value.

  • In the present work, shape of the mixing vane in Plus7 fuel assembly has been optimized numerically using three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis of flow and heat transfer. Standard $k-{\epsilon}$ model is used as a turbulence closure. The Response surface method is employed as an optimization technique. The objective function is defined as a combination of heat transfer rate and inverse of friction loss. Bend angle and base length of mixing vane are selected as design variables. Thermal-hydraulic performances for different shapes of mixing vane have been discussed, and optimum shape has been obtained as a function of weighting factor in the objective function.

  • In this study, the reliability-based design optimization of the airfoil was performed. PARSEC function was used to consider the uncertainty of the aerodynamic shape for the reliability-based shape optimization of airfoils. Among various reliability analysis methods, the moment method was used to compute the probability of failure of the aerodynamic performance. The accuracy of the reliability analysis was compared with other methods and it was found that the moment method predicts the probability of failure accurately. Deterministic and reliability-based optimizations were performed for the shape of the airfoil and it was demonstrated that reliability-based optimum assures the aerodynamic performances under uncertainties of the shape of the airfoil.

  • Shape optimization of a transonic axial compressor rotor operating at the design flow condition has been performed using three-dimensional Navier-Stokes analysis and three different surrogate models: i.e.., Response Surface Method(RSM), Kriging Method, and Radial Basis Function(RBF). Three design variables of blade sweep, lean and skew are introduced to optimize the three-dimensional stacking line of the rotor blade. The object function of the shape optimization is selected as an adiabatic efficiency. Throughout the shape optimization of the rotor blade, the adiabatic efficiency is increased for the three different surrogate models. Detailed flow characteristics at the optimal blade shape obtained by different optimization method are drawn and discussed.

  • In this study, reliability-based design optimizations of airfoils were performed.   • This paper reports a simple posteriori error estimate method for adaptive finite element mesh generation using quadratic shape function especially for the magnetic field problems. The elements of quadratic shape function have more precise solution than those of linear shape function. Therefore, the difference of two solutions gives error quantity. The method uses the magnetic flux density error as a basis for refinement. This estimator is tested on two dimensional problem which has singular points. The estimated error is always under estimated but in same order as exact error, and this method is much simpler and more convenient than other methods. The result shows that the adaptive mesh gives even better rate of convergence in global error than the uniform mesh.

Response surface method is employed as an optimization technique. The objective function is defined as a combination of inverse of heat transfer rate and friction loss. Two bend angles of mixing vane are selected as design variables. Thermal-hydraulic performances have been discussed and optimum shape has been obtained as a function of weighting factor in the objective function. The results show that the optimized geometry improves the heat transfer performance far downstream of the mixing vane.

  • In this thesis, we propose a new 3D shape descriptor. The proposed descriptor measures geometric characteristics by using the shortest path on surfaces. The descriptor is robust against a change of local posture. We measure the geometric characteristics of 3D object through a new shape function to construct the shape distribution. The proposed shape function is the shortest path shape function. The shape function measures the distance between two points on the surface of a 3D object. We evaluate the performance of the proposed method, compared with the previous method. The precision of retrievals improved by 23% in the case of articulated objects and is improved by 12% in the case of general objects.

  • Using the Vehicle Modeling Function, which can model various 3D nose shapes, nose shape optimization is performed to reduce the aerodynamic drag of the KTX Sancheon. 2D characteristic shapes of the KTX Sancheon nose were extracted and a base model of the KTX Sancheon was constructed for design optimization using the Vehicle Modeling Function. The design space was constructed with the base model and does not violate the shape constraints of commercial trains. Through nose shape optimization with the Broyden-Fletcher-Goldfarb-Shanno algorithm, the aerodynamic drag of the optimized shape was reduced by 6% compared to that of the base model. The longer nose and sharper edge of the optimized shape weaken the vortices behind the last car and can reduce the aerodynamic drag.
