Anatomical characters of the Bupleurum latissimum Nakai, an endemic species of Korea, were investigated to confirm its phylogenetic relationships. Compare to other species with anatomical characters, B. latissimum is very similar with B, euphorbioides and B, longeradiatum in point of lacking of pith in the stem, shape of involucres, number of vascular bundles in radical leaf and cauline leaf, and lacking stomata in adaxial leaf surface. The other hand, protruded pollen aperture character appears in B. latissimum and B. euphorbioides. On the based of anatomical characters, therefore, B. latissimum has closest relationships with B. euphorbioides and B. longeradiatum. It also needs molecular study including Asian species in order to confirm phylogenetic position and speciation process apparently.

Virtual Reality makes a virtual environment more realistic and, furthermore, it provides a variety of experiences which we cannot have in reality. A drastic growth of GPU performance and increase of computing capability make virtual environment more realistic than ever. One important element of constructing virtual environment is to animate 3D characters. Many researchers have been studying 3D characters animating and a myriad of methods have been proposed to make them more realistic. In this paper, we discuss the technologies and characteristics of 3D character animation. We believe that realistic characters in Virtual Reality will be applied to various fields: education, film and game industry, business and, particularly, medical area such as telemedicine, virtual surgery, etc.

Two Inonotus species newly found in Japan were described. I. formosanus T.T. Chang & W.N. Chou was identified with the following characters; thin basidocarps with hispid when young and later the erect hyphae agglutinate to scrupose tuft, pore surface light yellow to rusty brown later, absence of setal hyhpae, ventricose hymenial setae, and small ellipsoid, hyaline to yellowish basidiospores. I. nodulosus (Fr.) P. Karst. was identified with the following characters; basidocarps nodulose, wart-like shape, scrupose to warted by agglutinated hayphae, margin up to 5 mm, pore surface cinnamon to rusty brown when dry with a whitish or silvery shine, absence of setal hyphae, acute straight hymenical setae, ellipsoid to subglobose basidiospores, which are weakly dextrinoid in Melzer's reagent.

Local governments have been actively introducing the characters, which identity their regional features and publicize the governments, to increase municipal identity and encourage the participation of residents since the self-governing system was enforced in 1996. Some characters of local governments, however, were not often developed systematically and did not perform the intended purposes. This study reviewed general theories related to the general and municipal characters. Currently employed municipal characters were analyzed in various perspectives : problems of the characters were presented mixed use of terms for the symbol, selection of not creative materials. In addition, unsystematic planing and indifference of residents were revealed. This study could be utilized to shape design policy and applied to develop the municipal characters illustrating the proper regional characteristics and performing practical function.

This work was preliminary report on the shape of mulberry fruits and mulberry flowers. The shape of mulberry was varied with mulberry cultivars as bended oval shape (Daeshim), oval shape (Gwasang No. 2), oval-cylindrical shape (Sagyeppong), uneven heart shape (Suwonppong), and roundish shape (Cheonggangsang). The style of female flowers was also varied with cultivars as no style (Palchung), short style (Gwasang No. 2), cone style (Susungppong), and rectangular style (Daedangsang). This observation suggested that the shape and flower of mulberries are different among mulberry cultivars. It needs to further systematic study to know the shape and flower of mulberry cultivars and to elucidate the relationship between the morphological characters and mulberry cultivars.

A total of 47 core collections of pepper (Capsicum chinense Jacq.) conserved in National Agrobiodiversity Center (NAC) were studied under field condition at Jeonju. All accessions were characterized for their 14 qualitative and 16 quantitative characters. Results revealed that both qualitative and quantitative characters exhibited wide variation among the studied germplasm. Distribution of fruit characters (fruit length, width, and fruit wall thickness) among the accessions was positively skewed. Of the 47 accessions evaluated, 38.3% accessions had conical shaped fruits and mature fruit color was predominantly red (51.1%), orange (21.3%) and yellow (14.9%). Principal component analyses revealed that (i) 56.64% of the qualitative (fruit shape, color and fruit surface) variation and (ii) 89.42% of the quantitative (plant width, height and fruit maturity days) variation were explained by the first two components. Clustering revealed two groups and dendrogram revealed morphological variation among accessions. The phenotypic diversity exists in this core collections provide valuable information to improve agronomic traits in pepper breeding program.

Hangul is regarded as one of the difficult character set due to the large number of classes and the shape similarity among different characters. Most of the conventional researches attempted to recognize the 2,350 characters which are popularly used, but this approach has a problem or low recognition performance while it provides a generality. On the contrary, recognition of a small character set appearing in specific fields like postal address or bank checks is more practical approach. This paper describes a research for recognizing the handwritten Hangul characters appearing in monetary fields. The modular neural network is adopted for the classification and three kinds of feature are tested. The experiment performed using standard Hangul database PE92 showed the correct recognition rate 91.56%.

The present study was carried out to obtain some basic informations of the breeding of tobacco varieties. Genetically divergent 8 varieties, 3 flue-cured, 2 burley and 3 sun-cured tobaccos, were used in half diallel cross. In order to analyze the heterosis, combining abilities, modes of inheritance and correlations for some agronomic and chemical characters, 8 parents and 28 $F_2$ were tested. The results obtained were summarized as follows: The percentages of heterosis for yield, stem diameter, internode length and total sugar content in $F_2$ hybrid were positive , where-as those for the other characters were negative. Yield had significant positive genotypic and phenotypic correlations with plant height, days to flower, leaves per plant, leaf length, leaf width and leaf shape index (Leaf length/leaf width). General (GCA) and specific combining abilities (SCA) for all characters of $F_2$ hybrid were significant. In the effect of GCA, yield was greater in combinations of Bulgaria and Xanthi, days to flower and leaves per plant were those of Burley 21 and Va 528, leaf length and width were those of Coker 139, respectively. In the effect of SCA, the major part of characters were greater than those of others in the combinations of Burley 21, Va 528, Hicks.

In this study, there is main purpose to provide useful data in order to use the Hangul as a design factor. Also, there are two subordinate goals. First, to analyze standards as people estimate Hangul characters. Second, to understand people's preferences about Hangul characters and then, to catch formal features about that characters. In first result, It is known that people estimate Hangul characters based on four standards. They are neat, soft, cyber and plain standards. As second consequence, preferential Hangul characters have pretty, intimate, refined, soil, elaborate, forthright, tidy image. And they are square shape as a whole, less decorative, round edge style.

This experiment was conducted to examine characteristics of agronomic characters and estimate of gene effect for several mutant characters. The genetic populations were derived from cross between 83H-5 and Hicks. There were significant difference for plant height, stlk height, leaf shape and bacterial wilt disease index except leaf number, leaf length, and what is more, F3 variance is more than Bl and B2 generation from cross 83H-5 X Hicks. Gene actions for stalk height and bacterial wilt disease were estimated by 3-parameter, and by 6- parameter model for all characters except above two characters but stalk height and bacterial wilt disease index are not significant in the additive and dominance effects. Dominant$\times$dominant epitasis for plant height, dominant and dominant$\times$dominant epistasis for leaf length, additive and additive$\times$additive and dominant$\times$dominant epistasis for leaf width, and additive and additive$\times$dominant epistasis for days to flower were appeared significant in gene action.
