  • In this paper application of the projection operator technique to the study of NMR absorption line shape and free induction decay curve is explored. It is found that the projection operator technique can provide a convenient means for deriving a set of hierarchy equations which may serve as a good starting point for theoretical calculation of the absorption line and free induction decay function by successive approximation or by an appropriate decoupling approximation. A brief review of linear response theory of NMR line shape and the relation between the absorption line shape and free induction decay function are also described.

  • This paper deals with a comparative study on coupling of Element-free Galerkin(EFG) method and Infinite Element(IE) by IE's shape function. In this study, mapped infinite elements(mapped IE) and decay function infinite elements(decay IE) are coupled with the EFG method. A coupling procedure of EFG-Mapped IE is much easier to be integrated than a coupled EFG-Decay IE. A coupled EFG-IE method used well-defined functions to preserve the continuity and linear consistency on the interface of the EFG region and IE region. Several benchmark problems are solved to verify the effectiveness and accuracy of the coupling algorithms by IE's shape function. The numerical results show that the developed algorithms work well for the elastic problems with infinite boundaries.

  • Recently domestic drinking water industry has recognized membrane-based technology as a promising alternative for water treatment. To ensure successful application of membrane processes, the integrity of membrane systems should be maintained. According to US EPA guidance, the pressure decay test based on the bubble point theory is recommended to detect any membrane defection of which size is close to the smallest diameter of Cryptosporidium oocysts, $3{\mu}m$. Proper implementation of the pressure decay test is greatly affected by initial test pressure, and the interpretation of the test results is associated with upper control limit. This study is conducted to investigate various factors affecting determination of initial test prtessure and upper control limit, including membrane-based parameters such as pore shape correction factor, surface tension and contact angle, and system-based parameters, such as volumetric concentration factor and total volume of system. In this paper, three different hollow fibers were used to perform the pressure decay test. With identical initial test pressure applied, their pressure decay tendency were different from each other. This finding can be explained by the micro-structure disparity of those membranes which is verified by FESEM images of those membranes. More specifically, FESEM images revealed that three hollow fibers have asymmetry, deep finger, shallow finger pore shape, respectively. In addition, sensitivity analysis was conducted on five parameters mentioned above to elucidate their relation to determination of initial test pressure and upper control limit. In case of initial pressure calculation, the pore shape correction factor has the highest value of sensitivity. For upper control limit determination, system factors have greater impact compared to membrane-based parameters.

  • Tumbling motion is very effective for turbulence enhancement during compression process in the cylinder of 4-valve engines. In this paper the tumble decay mechanism for different intake port configuration were measured using laser Doppler velocimetry. Analysis of the tumble decay mechanism was achieved by means of two non-dimensional parameters, defined as tumble eccentricity and shape factor in tumble velocity profile, in addition to the tumble moment.

  • Using regular finite elements and infinite elements simultaneously, elastic boundary value problems with infinite domain can be analyzed more effectively and accurately. In this paper, two dimensional infinite elements have been formulated by means of applying the derived mapping function to the coordinates and multiplying the regular displacement shape functions by a decay function. Orders(m, n) of the mapping and decay functions are found for the purpose of obtaining the convergent solutions without respect to the various decay lengthes. As a result of numerical tests for an infinite plate with a hole under internal pressure, two sets of function orders are obtained as follows. (a) n=0, m=1.5 (b) n=m=0.65

  • The aim of this work is to develop the fractional Bateman equations, which can model memory effects in successive isotopes transformations. Such memory effects have been previously reported in the alpha decay, which exhibits a non-Markovian behavior. Since there are radioactive decay series with consecutive alpha decays, it is convenient to include the mentioned memory effects, developing the fractional Bateman Equations, which can reproduce the standard ones when the fractional order is equal to one. The proposed fractional model preserves the mathematical shape and the symmetry of the standard equations, being the only difference the presence of the Mittag-Leffler function, instead of the exponential one. This last is a very important result, because allows the implementation of the proposed fractional model in burnup and activation codes in a straightforward way. Numerical experiments show that the proposed equations predict high decay rates for small time values, in comparison with the standard equations, which have high decay rates for large times. This work represents a novelty approach to the theory of successive transformations, and opens the possibility to study properties of the Bateman equation from a fractional approach.

  • Manganese-doped $Zn_2SiO_4$ phosphors well known as a green emitter with high luminescence efficiency were prepared by the homogeneous precipitation method, and their photoluminescence properties under vacuum-ultraviolet (VUV) excitation were investigated. $Zn_2SiO_4$:Mn phosphors obtained by this method have exhibited a high luminance of property and a spherical shape of particles. In particular, the green emission intensity of zinc orthosilicate prepared as containing around 2 mole% of manganese was much stronger than that of the commercial $Zn_2SiO_4$:Mn phosphor, while the decay time was longer. However, addition of $Al^{3+}$ and $Li^+$ into $Zn_2SiO_4$:Mn composition has significantly diminished the decay time of the phosphor without much degradation of the emission intensity.

  • A numerical model of hydraulic resistance by hanging aquaculture facilities is developed and applied to a model basin and a field. A drag stress term formulated by the quadratic law of drag force is introduced Tn the equations of motion for a two-dimensional depth-averaged flow. In the model basin, numerical experiments ave tarried out for the various shape of obstructions, string density and layout of facilities etc.. The flow pattern around the facilities is affected sensitively by the density of string and the layout of facilities. On the other hand, the velocity decay due to the hanging oyster aquaculture facilities is observed in Kamak bay, where the maximum velcocity decay rate is $25\%$ in spring tide. The model is also applied to the field, Kamak bay. The velocity decay rate in the model is comparable with the field measurement data. The velocity decreases around the down-stream area of the facilities, .hut it increases in the other region. The water elevation decreases during the flood and it increases during the ebb.

  • This paper presents a two dimensional p-version static infinite element for analyzing $1/r^n$ displacement decay type problems in unbounded media. The proposed element is developed by using shape functions based on approximate expressions of an analytical solution. Numerical results are presented for an opening in a homogeneous elastic infinite medium and a rigid footing rested on a homogeneous elastic half-space. The numerical results show the effectiveness of the proposed infinite element.

  • Due to the rapid increase of long-distance transportation, particular attentions have been paid to truck tires, especially to their dynamic characteristics. In this research, experimental modal analysis on two kinds of light-duty truck tires, i.e., radial tire and bias tire, are performed by using GRFP(global rational fraction polynomial) method to investigate differences of the dynamic behavior of the two tires. The test results have shown that the modal frequencies of bias tire are much higher than the corresponding values of radial tire with a similar mode shape, which is in accordance with the fact that the radial rigidity of bias tire is higher than that of radial tire. And most of the modal decay rates of bias tire are larger than those of radial tire within the scope of this experiment. In the frequency domain range of test, the bias tire has extra modes, which do not occur in the radial tire. This difference is based on the fact that the circumferential rigidity of the bias tire is quire low whereas that of radial tire is so high that the frequencies of the corresponding modes are out of the frequency range of test.
