A compressed video bitstream is sensitive to errors that may severely degrade the reconstructed images even when the bit error rate is small. One approach to combat the impact of such errors is the use of error concealment at the decoder without increasing the bit rate or changing the encoder. For spatial-error concealment, we propose a method featuring edge continuity and texture preservation as well as low computation to reconstruct more visually acceptable images. Aiming at temporal error concealment, we propose a two-step algorithm based on block matching principles in which the assumption of smooth and uniform motion for some adjacent blocks is adopted. As simulation results show, the proposed spatial and temporal methods provide better reconstruction quality for damaged images than other methods.
Malty bridges are severely damaged by the overloaded heavy vehicle and tile trend will become more serious because the traffic volume is continuously increasing. Currently, the vehicles with gross weights over 40 tons or axle weight over 10 tons are not allowed on the public road. However, this regulation is not based on a systemetic study on the bridge capacityand assumed to be much too conservative depending on the vehicle types ans bridge types. In this study, the permit weights of heavy vehicles of diverse axle spacings and axle load distribution are calculated considering the structural characteristics of bridge superstructures. In order to consider the various load effects of heavy weight vehicle crossings, three conditions are considered in the calculation of permit vehicle load. From the results, the permit vehicle weights of bridges are calculated and simplified formulas which can be used in the case when only the vehicle dimension are known are presented.
The structural change and leakage of cellular substances of Saccharomyces cerevisiae attributed by high hydrostatic pressure (HHP) treatment were observed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). S. cerevisiae (ATCC16664) was inoculated in apple juice for 10 min at $23^{\circ}C$ and the apple juice treated at 138, 207, 276, 345, and 414 MPa pressure for 30 sec at $23^{\circ}C$. Increased of roughness, elongation, wrinkling, and pores on yeast cell surfaces, the yeast cell walls were severely damaged by HHP treatment from 276 to 414 MPa. Inactivation of S. cerevisiae by HHP is dependent on structural changes on the cell walls observed with SEM.
A few intake stations have vibration problems caused by pipes. The vibration transffered from pipes excites building severely. Therefore, the crack is generated on building wall and people who work at intake station are damaged. In this paper, the vibration is measured and analysis is carried out for pipes at intake station in order to identify the usefulness and effectiveness of the solution proposed for pipe resonance avoidance. According to the result of analysis, bellows is reduced the vibration of pipes.
Industrial power distribution system includes many kinds of non-linear loads, which produce the harmonics during energy conversion transition. The single-tuned passive filter is widely used to absorb the harmonics and attenuate its undesirable effect in the distribution system. However, the passive filter might be severely stressed, and sometimes even damaged, due to the absorption of harmonics. There is voltage rise on the capacitor when the single-turned harmonic filter is applied. When the capacitor voltage rose above the allowable limit, the expected life of the capacitor will considerably deteriorate. On the other hand, the reactor can experience the spike voltage even if the voltage and current of the capacitor are within the allowable limit, and this accumulated voltage stress of the reactor causes its premature fault. In this paper, we analyzed and compared the harmonic voltage and current of the reactor and capacitor in a single-tuned harmonic filter through the EMTP software and verified them with the experimental results.
Polyacrylontrile fiber was modified with argon low temperature plasma by RF glow discharge at 240 mTorr, 40 W to investigate the surface morphological changes and mechanical characteristics such as elongation, tenacity, and modulus. Analysis of the SEM images revealed that the plasma treatment resulted in significant ablation on the surfaces rendering a severe crack formation. The morphological changes were evident with short treatment time of argon plasma although longer treatment time damaged the surface more severely. The mechanical characteristics such as tenacity and elongation were deteriorated due to the plasma treatment. The tenacity of the fiber treated with argon-plasma for 5 min showed a decreased value up to 21.9 % when compared to the untreated fiber. While the corresponding initial modulus(0 - 1 %) increased markedly up to 44.3 %.
Most of steel structures in various industries are subjected to corrosion due to environmental exposure. Corrosion damage is a serious problem for these structures which may reduce their carrying capacity. These aging structures require maintenance and in many cases, replacement. The goal of this research is to consider the effects of corrosion by developing a model that estimates corrosion loss as a function of exposure time. The model is formulated based on average measured thickness data collected from three severely corroded I-beams (nearly 30 years old). Since corrosion is a time-dependent parameter. Analyses were performed to calculate the lateral buckling capacity of steel beam in terms of exposure time. Minimum curves have been developed for assessment of the remaining lateral buckling capacity of ordinary I-beams based on the loss of thicknesses in terms of exposure time. These minimum curves can be used by practicing engineers for better estimates on the service life of corrosion damaged steel beams.
Slender structures like reinforced concrete (RC) chimneys are severely damaged or collapsed during severe wind storms or strong ground motions all over the world. Today, with the improvement in technology and industry, most factories need these slender structures with increasing height and decreasing in shell thickness causing vulnerable to winds and earthquakes. Main objectives in this study are to make structural wind and earthquake analysis of RC chimneys by using a well-known international standard CICIND 2001 and real recorded time history accelerations and to clarify weak points of these tall and slender structures against these severe natural actions. Findings of this study show that maximum tensile stress and shear stress approximately increase 103.90% and 312.77% over or near the openings on the body of the RC chimneys that cause brittle failure around this region of openings.
The annals of Joseon Dynasty has been known as one of the UNESCO's Memory of the World Heritage. Some of the annals of Joseon Dynasty was composed with wax coated book. Especially the waxed book have been severely damaged by various reason. To find out the safety preservation method of the annals of Joseon Dynasty waxed book, the characteristics of reinforced dewaxed Hanji was evaluated in this paper. From strength properties of MC treated dewaxed Hanji after dewaxing with different method, dewaxing ratio was been high, polymer treated dew axed Hanji showed a better strength. As the aging time, polymer layer on dewaxed Hanji was became brittle and cracked.
Great cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo) have been growing on a large scale since they settled on Jokja Island in Lake Paldang in 2010. In 2017, 827 breeding nests were found in Jokja Island and the breeding success rate was $2.60{\pm}0.23$ per nest. Nestling tree did not show any specificity for the species and was severely damaged. As the nesting materials for cormorants, branches and leaves, which were easy to come by around the island, were used. Most of their prey were fish in Lake Paldang. The population the great cormorants showed high breeding success rate, indicating that Jokja Island was a good site for breeding. Thus, it shows that continuous research for them needs to be done.
