  • In connection with the monitoring of the insulation degradation of the large power apparatus, a statistical treatment, such as phase resolved partial discharge analysis (PRPDA) has been established for the on-line monitoring system during the past two decades. However, it has shown some inconveniences to distinguish the nature of the PD source in power apparatus. In this regard, a novel approach based on the chaotic analysis(CAPD) is proposed describing the fundamental ideas, outcomes and different view points from conventional PRPDA. In order to make a model for the possible defects causing sudden failures in service, several types of specimen were prepared. And partial discharge signals, originated from those samples, were measured and analyzed by means of PRPDA and CAPD respectively. In this paper, it seems that the correlation between the consecutive PD pulses depending on the nature of PD could be investigated by CAPD. Therefore, it could be considered that the nature of PD source can be distinguished more distinctively when the PRPDA is combined with CAPD.

  • In engineering industry, technical documentation refers to any type of documentation that describes handling, functionality and architecture of a technical product. The intended audiences for product technical documentation is the end user, the administrator, service or maintenance technician. Competition and rapid technological evolutions have created pressure to release new and improved products on an increasingly frequent basis. As the technical capabilities of products advance, the technical documentation for those products is becoming longer and complex. The Darwin Information Typing Architecture (DITA) is and XML-based, end-to-end architecture for authoring, producing, and delivering technical documents. DITA is an OASIS standard that allows documentation groups to single-source document for multiple products and users, to automatically publish that documentation in several media formats including PDF and HTML, and to efficiently maintain and update that documentation. This paper study on the various implementation projects for technical documentation using OASIS DITA standard and examines the potential for using DITA as a solution for reconstructing existing technical documentation. Also We offer an incremental adoption approach to effectively implement DITA standard of technical documentation project for domestic firms, while reducing failures.

  • There are various types of unexpected troubles in service of a thermal power plant, which consists of many complicated high-tech mass equipments. The troubles are mostly caused by the manufacturing defects, the material deteriorations, the human errors, and others. Failures of its system due to the troubles, can bring on the extravagant economic loss and the qualitative degradation of electricity. Especially, it is most important to find a way to decrease human errors because it can result in not only the economic loss, but also morale declination of employees or the department related to the trouble. Therefore, we categorize previous troubles related to the human errors, and try to show the causations and the counter-measures based on the various categories such as maintenance, an operation, and system of the thermal power plants.

  • An enterprise patch-management system (PMS) typically supplies a single point of failure (SPOF) of centralization structure. However, a Blockchain system offers features of decentralization, transaction integrity, user certification, and a smart chaincode. This study proposes a Hyperledger Fabric Blockchain-based distributed patch-management system and verifies its technological feasibility through prototyping, so that all participating users can be protected from various threats. In particular, by adopting a private chain for patch file set management, it is designed as a Blockchain system that can enhance security, log management, latest status supervision and monitoring functions. In addition, it uses a Hyperledger Fabric that owns a practical Byzantine fault tolerant consensus algorithm, and implements the functions of upload patch file set, download patch file set, and audit patch file history, which are major features of PMS, as a smart contract (chaincode), and verified this operation. The distributed ledger structure of Blockchain-based PMS can be a solution for distributor and client authentication and forgery problems, SPOF problem, and distribution record reliability problem. It not only presents an alternative to dealing with central management server loads and failures, but it also provides a higher level of security and availability.

  • High speed all optical network is a viable option to satisfy the exponential growth of internet usage in the recent years. Optical networks offer very high bit rates and, by employing technologies like internet protocol over wavelength division multiplexing(IP-over-WDM), these high bit rates can be effectively utilized. However, failure of a network component, carrying such high speed data traffic can result in enormous loss of data in a few seconds and persistence of a failure can severely degrade the performance of the entire network. Designing IP-over-WDM networks, which can withstand failures, has been subject of considerable interest in the research community recently. Most of the research is focused on the failure of optical links in the network. This paper addresses the problem of designing IP-over-WDM networks that do not suffer service degradation in case of a single link failure. The paper proposes an approach based on the framework provided by a recent paper by M. Kurant and P. Thiran. The proposed approach can be used to design large survivable IP-over-WDM networks.

  • Coordination under short-circuit conditions is a systematic application of protective devices in the electrical power system, which, in response to a fault, will remove only a minimum amount of equipment from service. The objective is not only to minimize the equipment damage and process outage costs, but also to protect personnel from the effects of these failures. The coordination study of an electric power system consists of an organizes time-current study of all devices in series from the utilization device to the source. This study is a comparison of the time it takes the individual devices to operate when certain levels of normal or abnormal current pass through the protective devices. The objective of a coordination study is to determine the characteristics, ratings, and settings of overcurrent protective devices that will ensure that the minimum unfaulted load is interrupted when the protective devices isolate a fault or overload anywhere in the system. At the same time, the devices and settings selected should provide satisfactory protection against overloads on the equipment and interrupt short-circuit as rapidly as possible.

  • KSNPs(Korea Standard Nuclear Power Plant) have been applied the break exclusion criteria to the high energy lines passing through containment penetration area to ensure that piping failures would not cause the loss of containment isolation function, and to reduce the resulting dynamic effects. Systems with the criteria are the Main Steam system, Feed Water system, Steam Generator Blowdown system, and Chemical & Volume Control system. In accordance with FSAR(Final Safety Analysis Report), a 100% volumetric examination by augmented in-service inspection of all pipe welds appled the break exclusion criteria is required for the break exclusion application piping. However, it is difficult to fully satisfy the requirements of inspection because 12", 8" and 6" weldolet weldments of Main Steam pipe line have complex structural shapes. To resolve the difficulty on the application of conventional UT(Ultrasonic Testing) technique, realistic mock-ups and UT calibration blocks were made. Simulations of conventional UT were performed utilizing CIVA, a commercial NDE(Nondestructive Examination) simulation software. Phased array UT experiments were performed through mock-up including artificial notch type flaws. A phased array UT technique is finally developed to improve the reliability of ultrasonic test at main steam line pipe to 12", 8" and 6" branch connection weld.

  • It is well known that the strength and the fatigue life of welded steel components are affected extensively by welding residual stresses distributed around their weldments under not only monotonic but also cyclic loads. The externally applied loads are to be superimposed with the welding residual stresses, so that unexpected deformations and failures of the components might occur. These residual stresses are not kept constant, but relaxed or redistributed during in service. Under monotonic loads the relaxation takes place when the sum of external and welding residual stress exceeds locally the yield stress of material used. By the way, it is shown that under cyclic loads the welding residual stress is considerably relieved by the first or the early cycles of loads, and then gradually relaxed with increasing loading cycles. Although many investigations in this field have been carried out, the phenomenon and mechanism of the stress relaxation are still not clear, and there are few comprehensive models to predict amount of relaxed welding residual stress. In this study, the characteristics of the welding residual stress relaxation under monotonic and cyclic loads were investigated, and a model to predict quantitatively amount of welding residual stress relaxation was proposed.

  • Crack is the most common typical feature of concrete deterioration, so routine monitoring and health assessment become essential for identifying failures and to set up an appropriate rehabilitation strategy in order to extend the service life of concrete structures. At present, image segmentation algorithms have been applied to crack analysis based on inspection images of concrete structures. The results of crack segmentation offering crack information, including length, width, and area is helpful to assist inspectors in surface inspection of concrete structures. This study proposed an algorithm of image segmentation enhancement, named morphological segmentation based on edge detection-II (MSED-II), to concrete crack segmentation. Several concrete pavement and building surfaces were imaged as the study materials. In addition, morphological operations followed by cross-curvature evaluation (CCE), an image segmentation technique of linear patterns, were also tested to evaluate their performance in concrete crack segmentation. The result indicates that MSED-II compared to CCE can lead to better quality of concrete crack segmentation. The least area, length, and width measurement errors of the concrete cracks are 5.68%, 0.23%, and 0.00%, respectively, that proves MSED-II effective for automatic measurement of concrete cracks.

  • Unattended Train operation(UTO) requires higher safety target than other systems, since all train operations are automatic. The system provider to deliver without accident or failure, and the operator to transport passengers without accident by putting all trains supplied, including them, into service. Safety rates without such failures can be represented as indicators of RAMS, among which availability is continuously controllable to achieve the target, with a clear target. Availability is often required by the licensee from the initial stage of the project to demonstrate that the request for proposal (RFP) is usually specified and to maintain separate availability targets at the operational stage. In particular, unlike unmanned operation light rail in complex systems, simple formulas are often presented to facilitate verification at each stage. This paper presents this method of usability calculation in an integrated manner at all levels and analyzes the existing usability values to ensure reliability of the availability formula for integrated use in unmanned light rail systems.
