Serious games are developed not only as a means of enjoying fun, but also as a special purpose in various fields such as education, medicine, public relations, and management. Such a serious game should have the effect of meeting the specific purpose with the game of the general game. However, it is difficult to show both game performance and effectiveness. This study examines game performance and effectiveness of serious game, and suggests a method of finding model of superior serious game. In the experiment, we examined the game performance of some commercial and general games using the proposed method and confirmed the meaningful results.
Concentration is one of the most important factor in learning ability. It is important to improve concentration for learning ability. Most digital kids have been accustomed to addictive media like games since childhood, so traditional methods of teaching and learning has been difficult to give interests for them. Therefore introducing a new teaching methods was inevitable for students with low concentration. This is an experiment to prove the hypothesis that the concentration training by certain serious game would be helpful for improving students' concentration. Not only some serious games but also meditation by music was effective to improve concentration in the experiment. Average people is hard to immerge in meditation. but some serious games involve fun factors like curiosity, challenges, competitions and rewards. Games are not more negative to young people, will be helpful to society in various forms.
Despite the Korean Government's efforts, serious games industry still finds difficult to thrive in Korea. The purpose of this study was to analyze systematically why serious games industry is slow to grow in South Korea and to make future suggestions for policy by studying the case of FCPS program. For future suggestions, the government should support the ecology rather than the games themselves by building more infrastructures, suuporting more software, and considering human factors. Responsible play and digital citizenship must also be emphasized.
Although computer games seem to be efficient tools for facilitating and supporting situated learning in Europe, GBL(game based learning) is less likely in Korea. The objectives of this paper are to address the causes of the problem and evaluate a serious game for history GBL. We review various cases of history GBL projects in European School Net, commercial games and serious games which are related to history. We draw a demand of our game's structural type, learning criterion, basic model of instruction, and executable prototype from the analysis results. Scene management educators pursue and dependencies of turning points in the history are critical differentiator. An evaluation team of educators, learners, and edu-game managers evaluates that the prototype is suitable model for application in history instruction.
Recently, there has been an increasing interest of serious games escaping it's negative views on games in general, broadening and widening the area in the scopes of game field. Among these, educational serious games not only satisfy both the purpose of enjoyment and educational values, but also has been looking for new ways of distribution of the digital textbooks and utilizing them to the best of their potentials. This can change the ways we understand things by using the revitalization on the basis of serious game competitions. The purpose of this study was to analyze educational game and game competition and to develop the efficient management strategies.
Programming is a difficult meat for novices. Educatees nowadays start to play games before they first attend formal education. Serious games offer tools that may have potential to support programming trainers to become more engaged on their learning through a learn while having fun approach. This paper aims to design and implement serious game for programming education. Our serious game substitutes game rules and objects for elements of programming language. We will begin by describing the game mechanics, followed by the general system architecture, finalizing with a small conclusion. We also discuss the implications of our work for the development of the serious game that support the identified features and teach programming concepts.
In this study I divided the development history of educational serious games into three periods. from 1995 to 2020 in Korea. I drew out some characteristics of each period. And I analyzed the correlation between the level of technology and learning effects or fun. so I found out some results. According to my analysis, the level of technology and learning effects and fun are not related to successful factors. While play style which is familiar and accessible to students like casual game has been commercially successful. It also confirmed that well-balanced games between fun and learning effects are a key factor in commercial success.
The study was conducted for cohering academical achievement of serious game studies as well as for attempting to give directions for interdisciplinary development. The purpose of the study were, first, it provides a rationale for integrating game studies lied scattered into a game study field or game industry. Second, by providing exemplary studies according to categories and by analyzing how those studies have been studied, this study provides a milestone for future researchers who are interested in serious game studies. The educational serious game study is "the study which investigates educational affordances of game including both explicitly intended designed for education and designed for fun but having implicit educational meanings, through the context of formal educational settings as well as informal environments." The author also researched how extended educational serious game studies have been researched according to four categories; game studies which researched educationally designed serious games, commercial games used for educational fields, educational serious games for informal learning, and those found meanings of games. This study has scholarly significance, especially on game study fields. for delineating game studies, a range of proposed and actual applications of educational serious game are reviewed, guiding directions for future studies.
This article aims to provide an overall picture of the applications of serious games for social changes. Our main goals are to show that game has great potential in delivering messages for social changes and to suggest guidelines for researchers and game developers in designing related games. We synthesized the key concepts of games for change that make them promising through literature reviews and analyzing game lists for social changes. Based on the theoretical investigations, we found that both role-taking and simulation of games are powerful ways not only to influence attitudes toward the other side but also to bring out empathy as psychological mechanism to draw attitude changes and altruistic actions associated with social or political issues.
In this paper, we have described a survey of applications and results of serious games for science education in elementary and middle school students. We constructed the educational contents and curriculum for learning natural science principles through game contents by analyzing science course of elementary and middle schools. Based on this curriculum, we developed science educational serious games 'Science Heroes' to help teaching-learning difficulty caused by abstract science concepts or spatial-temporal limitation. In our research, we carried out a serious game evaluation test for our game contents by current teachers about applicability to the real education field and supplementary points.
