According to the regulation of IMO, oil discharge from ships is allowed under 15ppm only and an oil filtering equipment is essential. However, for large ships using heavy fuel oil of over S.G 0.98 and viscosity 380cSt and system oil, it has been in difficulty to process with existing filtering type of oily water separator. A parallel plate type oily water separator which is one of gravity type separators can be used as an assistant equipment for the oil filtering system to meet the present IMO standard of 15 ppm, because it is an efficient method in dealing with a large amount of rich oil with high specific gravity. This work is focused on the fundamental investigation of the performance of the plate type oily water separator by visualization method and PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) measurement to acquire multi-point velocity data simultaneously. The experimental results showed that the space of the plates acts a significant role in separating process and it was found that an important point to minimize a vortex flow is to flow a large amount of fluid in space of the plates in order to promote the efficiency of separation.

Flow visualization and PIV measurements were conducted to investigate the flow characteristics of multi-channel with inclination angle. The water flow seeded with tiny vegetable powder as tracers revealed details of flow field. The PIV measurement to acquire multi-point velocity data simulatneously was carried out at three space of plates for 5, 10, and 15mm with variation of inlet flow rates of $0.25m^3/h$ and <$0.5m^3/h.$ Experiment results show that space of plates acts a significant role in separating process.

This paper proposes a separation of mixed signals by using the robust independent component analysis(RICA) based on neural networks. RICA is based on the temporal correlations and the second order statistics of signal. This method e is applied for improving the analysis rate and speed in which the sources have very small or zero kurtosis. The proposed method has been applied for separating the 10 mixed finger prints of $256{\times}256$-pixel and the 4 mixed images of $512{\times}512$-pixel, respectively. The simulation results show that RICA has the separating rate and speed better than those using the conventional FP algorithm based on Newton method.
For a partially filled and deeply submersed membrane container, an analytic solution for similarity shape was studied. The static shape of a membrane container can be expressed as a set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations. These equations are combined into an integrable equation. The solution of the equation is derived in terms of elliptic integrals, the arguments of which contain an unknown at the point of inflection. The point of inflection is determined by using the boundary condition at a separating point. Some characteristic values of the similarity shape were evaluated and the shapes are illustrated.

In this paper, we propose the position- and size-independent handwritten on-line Korean character recognition system using multilayer neural networks which are trained with error back-propagation learning algorithm and the features of Hanguel consonants and vowels. Starting point, end point, and three vectors from starting point to end point of each stroke of characters inputted from mouse or tablet are applied as inputs of neural networks. If double consonants and vowels are separated by single consonants and vowels, all consonants and vowels have at most four strokes. Therefore, four neural networks learn the consonants and the vowels having each number of strokes. Also, we propose the algorithm of separating the consonants and vowels and constructing a character.
For a long partially-filled membrane container on an incline, the analytic solution of the similarity shape is studied. The nonlinear equation is solved and its solution is expressed as elliptic integrals, which include an unknown at the point of inflection. The point of inflection is determined by using the boundary condition at the upper separating point. Some characteristic values of the universal shape are evaluated, as the functions of inclination angle and shapes are illustrated for some cases.

Aggregate waste separator with rotating separating net was designed for applying classification process of construction waste. In order to evaluate the performance of the aggregate waste separator, according to the type of waste, standardized waste samples are prepared using acrylic. The appropriate operating point was evaluated by the classification efficiency and misclassification rate of recycled aggregate according to the control frequency of the blower operating and inlet position of the separating net. The classification efficiency at the operating point of the aggregate waste separator was evaluated through flow analysis assuming recycled aggregate and waste sample as particles. As a result of the performance test, when the distance. between the conveyor belt and the inlet was 0.2m, the classification efficiency was 95%, but the misclassification rate of recycled aggregate was 2% or more, which satisfies the classification efficiency and the misclassification rate of less than 2%. The operating point was shown at a control frequency of 58Hz at a suction distance of 0.254m. As a resu lt of flow analysis, there was no misclassification of recycled aggregate. In order to redu ce constru ction waste in the existing recycled aggregate production process, adsorption system using a rotating separating net that can be operated as an installation type was built.

Springing phenomena of ships is introduced with its concept, research history and approach methodology. Being a hydroelasticity problem, non-linear vibration and stochastic process, springing was formulated and modeled in vibration point of view separating hydrodynamic force into system properties and excitation force. Both RAO and response spectrum as well as wave spectrum were presented as a case study of springing analysis for a flexible vessel with wide breadth. The effect of advance speed, heading angle and loading condition were investigated as parametric study. The results and observations showed availability of analysis for the prediction of the ship springing behavior.

Our experimental research focuses on manipulating pinning deflects to alter the phase diagram of vortex matter, creating new vortex phases. Vortex matter offers a unique opportunity for creating and studying these novel phase transitions through precise control of thermal, pinning and elastic energies. The vortex melting transition in untwinned YB $a_2$C $u_3$$O_{7-}$$\delta$/ crystals is investigated in the presence of disorder induced by particle irradiation. We focus on the low disorder regime, where a glassy state and a lattice state can be realized in the same phase diagram. We follow the evolution of the first order vortex melting transition line into a continuous transition line as disorder is increased by irradiation. The transformation is marked by an upward shift in the lower critical point on the melting line. With columnar deflects induced by heavy ion irradiation, we find a second order Bose glass transition line separating the vortex liquid from a Bose glass below the lower critical point. Furthermore, we find an upper threshold of columnar defect concentration beyond which the lower critical point and the first order melting line disappear together. With point deflect clusters induced by proton irradiation, we find evidence for a continuous thermodynamic transition below the lower critical point..

In this thesis, We studied on hand-written character recognition, that characters entered into a digital input device and remove noise and separating character elements using preprocessing. And processed character images has done thinning and 3-level wavelet transform for making normalized image and reducing image data. The structural method among the numerical Hangul recognition methods are suitable for recognition of printed or hand-written characters because it is usefull method deal with distortion. so that method are applied to separating elements and analysing texture. The results show that recognition by analysing texture is easily distinguished with respect to consonants. But hand-written characters are tend to decreasing successful recognition rate for the difficulty of extraction process of the starting point, of interconnection of each elements, of mis-recognition from vanishing at the thinning process, and complexity of character combinations. Some characters associated with the separation process is more complicated and sometime impossible to separating elements. However, analysis texture of the proposed character recognition with the exception of the complex handwritten is aware of the character.
