Simultaneous Faults Detection and Isolation Using Null Space Components of Faults for INS Sensor Redundancy

  • We consider inertial navigation system (INS) sensor redundancy and propose a method which uses singular value decomposition to detect and isolate faults when even two sensors have faults simultaneously. When redundant sensor configuration is given, such as symmetric configuration in INS, the range space and null space of configuration matrix are determined. We use null space of configuration matrix and define 21 reference fault vectors which include 6 one-fault vectors and 15 two-fault vectors. Measurements are projected into null space of measurement matrix and compared with 21 normalized reference fault vectors, which determines fault detection and isolation.

  • In this paper, a multi-objective wireless sensor network configuration optimization method is proposed. The proposed method aims to determine the optimal information and lifespan wireless sensor network for structural health monitoring of large-scale infrastructures. In particular, cluster-based wireless sensor networks with multi-type of sensors are considered. To optimize the lifetime of the wireless sensor network, a cluster-based network optimization algorithm that optimizes the arrangement of cluster heads and base station is developed. On the other hand, based on the Bayesian inference, the uncertainty of the estimated parameters can be quantified. The coefficient of variance of the estimated parameters can be obtained, which is utilized as a holistic measure to evaluate the estimation accuracy of sensor configurations with multi-type of sensors. The proposed method provides the optimal wireless sensor network configuration that satisfies the required estimation accuracy with the longest lifetime. The proposed method is illustrated by designing the optimal wireless sensor network configuration of a cable-stayed bridge and a space truss.

  • We investigate the influence of nonlinear viscoelastic damping on the response of a cantilever sensor covered by piezoelectric layers in a symmetric or asymmetric configuration. We formulate an initial-boundary-value problem which consistently incorporates both geometric and material nonlinearities including the effect of viscoelastic damping which cannot be ignored for micro- and nano-mechanical sensor operation in a vacuum environment. We employ an asymptotic multiple-scales methodology to yield the system nonlinear frequency response near its primary resonance and employ a model-based estimation procedure to deduce the system damping backone curve from controlled experiments in vacuum. We discuss the effect of nonlinear damping on sensor applications for scanning probe microscopy.

  • Vision-based lane sensing systems require accurate and robust sensing performance in lane detection. Besides, there exists trade-off between the computational burden and processor cost, which should be considered for implementing the systems in passenger cars. In this paper, a stereo vision-based lane detection system is developed with considering sensor configuration aspects. An inverse perspective mapping method is formulated based on the relative correspondence between the left and right cameras so that the 3-dimensional road geometry can be reconstructed in a robust manner. A new monitoring model for estimating the road geometry parameters is constructed to reduce the number of the measured signals. The selection of the sensor configuration and specifications is investigated by utilizing the characteristics of standard highways. Based on the sensor configurations, it is shown that appropriate sensing region on the camera image coordinate can be determined. The proposed system is implemented on a passenger car and verified experimentally.

  • Most of the surveillance systems are based on CCTV, closed circuit Television. A surveillance system for urban transit is also based on CCTV. Urban transit operation corporations have a CCTV system and a lot of cameras to monitor the situation for the passengers, and the important facilities. But this system has some problems that it cannot respond to a state of emergency immediately. In this paper, we describe a configuration of an intelligent surveillance system for urban transit to solve that problems. Our proposed configuration include a camera with some intelligent module, and a processor to integrate various data from not only cameras, but also sensors such as a temperature sensor, a heat sensor, sound sensor and etc. and some other data generator. This system configuration can decide the state of the passengers and the facilities. The surveillance system with this configuration can available with the existing surveillance system without a considerable improvement.

Development of Optical Fiber Hydrogen Sensor Based on Polarization-Diversity Loop Configuration Using Pd-Coated Polarization-Maintaining Fiber (팔라듐 코팅된 편광 유지 광섬유를 이용한 편광 상이 배치 구조 기반 광섬유 수소 센서의 개발)

  • In this study, we propose a fiber-optic hydrogen sensor using a polarization-diversity loop configuration composed of a polarization beam splitter, two quarter-wave plates, and a polarization-maintaining fiber coated with palladium whose thickness is ~400nm. One transmission dip of the output interference spectrum of the proposed sensor, chosen as a sensor indicator, was observed to spectrally shift with the increase of the hydrogen concentration, and the sensing indicator showed a wavelength shift of ~2.48nm at a hydrogen concentration of 4%. Except for a hydrogen concentration of 4%, the response time of the proposed sensor was measured as less than 12.5s and did not show significant dependence on the hydrogen concentration. In particular, the proposed fiber hydrogen sensor is more durable and highly resistant to external stress applied on a transverse axis of an optical fiber, compared with other hydrogen sensors based on side-polished fibers or fiber gratings.

  • The configuration of redundant inertial sensors are very important when considering navigation performance and fault detection and isolation (FDI) performance. By constructing a redundant sensor system using multiple inertial sensors, it is possible to improve the navigation performance and fault detection and isolation performance, which are highly related to the sensor configuration and allocation. In order to deploy multiple MEMS inertial measurement units effectively, a configuration and allocation methods considering navigation performance, fault detection and isolation performance, and lever arm effect in one plane are presented, and the performance is analyzed through simulation in this research. From the results, it is confirmed that the proposed configuration and allocation method can improve navigation, FDI, and lever arm effect rejection performances more effectively by more than 70%.

  • A robot assembly method which uses configuration and force/torque information of tactile sensor system and performs chamferless peg-in-hole tasks is suggested and experimentally studied. When the robot gripes the peg with random orientation, the realignment of the peg to the hole center line is successfully performed with the gripping configuration information of the tactile sensor and the inverse kinematics of the robot. The force/torque information of the tactile sensor makes it possible to control the contacting force between mating parts during hole search stage. The suggested algorithm employs a hybrid position/force control and the experiments show that the algorithm accomplishes well peg-in-hole tasks with permissible small contacting force. The chamferless peg-in-hole tasks with smaller clearance than the robot repeatibility can be excuted without any loss or deformation of mating parts. This study the possibility of precise and chamferless parts mating by robot and tactile sensor system.

  • Wireless sensor networks are subject to highly heterogeneous system requirements in terms of their functionality and performance due to their broad application areas. Though the heterogeneity hinders the opportunity of developing a single universal platform for sensor networks, efforts to provide uniform, inter-operable and scalable ones for sensor networks are still essential for the growth of the industry as well as their technological advance. As a part of our work to develop such a robust platform, this paper presents the software architecture for sensor nodes with focus on our sensor node operating system and its configuration methodology. Addressing principle issues in its design space which includes programming, execution, task scheduling and software layer models, our architecture is highly reconfigurable with respect to system resources and functional requirements and also highly efficient in supporting multi-threading under small system resources.

  • The distance of sensor nodes is an important factor in having influence on capability of networks in underwater acoustic sensor networks. Our proposed scheme is to establish an efficient distance to design a route of communication in underwater environment and it proposes a Level scheme that the areas divided by transmit/receive distance in network are given different levels. Our proposed scheme is pursued research to maintain a established route and maximize an energy efficiency. The established route will have fluid modification by an internal and external factors and it will construct more robust underwater sensor networks over our proposed multiple path configuration scheme.
