Estimation of Spatial Evapotranspiration Using Terra MODIS Satellite Image and SEBAL Model - A Case of Yongdam Dam Watershed - (Terra MODIS 위성영상과 SEBAL 모형을 이용한 공간증발산량 산정 연구 - 용담댐 유역을 대상으로 -)

  • The purpose of this paper is to build a spatio-temporal evapotranspiration(ET) estimation model using Terra MODIS satellite image and by calibrating with the flux tower ET data from watershed. The fundamentals of spatial ET model, Surface Energy Balance Algorithm for Land(SEBAL) was adopted and modified to estimate the daily ET of Yongdam Dam watershed in South Korea. The daily Normalized Distribution Vegetation Index(NDVI), Albedo, and Land Surface Temperature(LST) from MODIS and the ground measured wind speed and solar radiation data were prepared for 2 years(2012-2013). The SEBAL was calibrated with the forest ET measured by Deokyusan flux tower in the study watershed. Among the model parameters, the important parameters were surface albedo, NDVI and surface roughness in order for momentum transport during calculation of sensible heat flux. As a result of the final calibration, the monthly averaged albedo and NDVI were used because the daily values showed big deviation with unrealistic change. The determination coefficient($R^2$) between SEBAL and flux data was 0.45. The spatial ET reflected the geographical characteristics showing the ET of lowland areas was higher than the highland ET.

Snowfall and Ocean Conditions Characteristic in the West Sea of Korea in Winter (동계 서해의 해황과 적설 특성)

  • This study was conducted to find out the effects of relationship between ocean conditions and snowfall when cold and dry continental air mass passes through the West Sea of Korea. Route of continental high atmospheric pressure can cause effect on snowfall at the west regions (Inchoen, Gunsan, Mokpo) of the Korean Peninsula. The continental high atmospheric pressure extend from the southern China to western coastal region of the Korean Peninsula during the December, and it extend from the north side of China through Bohai Sea and Yodong Peninsula to central area of the Korean Peninsula during the February. Therefore, more snowfall recorded in Incheon is higher during Feb. than Dec.. whereas Gunsan and Mokpo is the opposite. The heavy snowfall at the western coastal region of Korea was caused by loss of the heat from the ocean to air when it's higher than $100W/m^2$. the heavy snowfall was also observed when the arrangement of continental high atmospheric pressure and low pressure was high at the West and low at the East, which formed a front in West and when the wind blow from the North or North West at the speed of $4\sim8m/sec$. There were not much relation between salinity in the western sea and snowfall in the western coastal region of Korea.

Evaluation of thermal stress of poultry according to stocking densities using mumerical BES model (BES 수치모델을 이용한 사육 밀도별 가금류 고온 스트레스 평가)

  • Micro climatic conditions within the livestock facility are affected by various factors such as ventilation, cooling, heating, insulation and latent and sensible heat generation from animals. In this study, numerical BES method was used to simulate energy flow inside the poultry house. Based on the BES method and THI concept, degree of thermal stress of poultry was evaluated according to the locations in South Korea. Comparison of THI values within the poultry house was also carried out according to the stocking densities to reflect recent animal-welfare issue. Significant decrease in thermal stress of poultry was observed when the stocking density of $30kg/m^2$ was applied in the change of the seasons(p<0.05) however, there was no statistically significant difference in summer season(p>0.05). It meant that installation of proper cooling system is urgently needed. For Iksan city of Jeollabuk-do province, total 252 hours of profit for thermal stress was found according to decrease in the stocking density.

  • Controllers used in nuclear power plants require high reliability. A controller including a Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) and a Complex Programmable Logic Device (referred to hereinafter as FPGA) has been applied to many Nuclear Power Plants (NPP) in the past, including the APR1400 (Advanced Power Reactor 1400), a Korean digital nuclear power plant. Initially, the FPGA was considered as a general IC (Integrated Circuit) and verified only by device verification and performance testing. In the 1990s, research on FPGA verification began, and until the FPGA became a chip, it was regarded as software and the software Verification and Validation (V&V) using IEEE 1012-2004 was implemented. Currently, IEC 62566, which is a European standard, has been applied for a lot of verification. This method has been evaluated as the most sensible method to date. This is because the method of verifying the characteristics of SoC (System on Chip), which has been a problem in the existing verification method, is sufficiently applied. However, IEC 62566 is a European standard that has not yet been adopted in the United States and maintains the application of IEEE 1012 for FPGA. IEEE 1012-2004 or IEC 62566 is a technical standard. In practice, various methods are applied to meet technical standards. In this paper, we describe the procedure and important points of verification method of Nuclear Safety Class FPGA applying SoC verification method.

A study on the moral instruction by Spinoza's Ethics (스피노자 『윤리학』으로 본 도덕과수업)

  • The purpose of the present article is to understand moral instruction through Ethics written by Spinoza and enable the implications drawn from its understanding to give shape to lesson plans. In his representative book titled Ethics, Spinoza speculates ultimate substance from the metaphysical perspective and converges it into ethics. The ultimate substance, which is a cause of itself, refers to immanent cause of all things that have numerous attributes as essence. All things in nature develop the substance and exchange influence among individuals at the same time. A human in the influential relationship perceives things based on one's beneficialness and assigns moral words of good and evil. However, a human, who is a mode of substance, should escape from morals that are superficial, relative, and objective, in order to realize nature. Becoming a more complete human requires going through moral imagination in reality but going beyond the imagination ultimately. Moral instruction premises the moral imagination of a student who exists as a mode; meanwhile, it is a study to escape from the influence of moral imagination. Good and evil arise from the limitation that an existing human has, but if a life is to preserve the necessity of ultimate substance, moral instruction can be defined as the processes of alleviating the influence that hinders a human's nature from being realized. Giving shape to this processes with the basis on the Spinoza's epistemic argument, moral instructional texts can be composed of stages to form more adequate moral ideas about moral subjects gradually and cumulatively. The moral instruction like this expects moral awareness which is relatively perfect than the present moral imagination. Furthermore, with the teaching and learning like this sustained, it is expected that ultimately the limitation arising from sensible perception can be overcome to approach the realization of a human's nature.

A Case Study on the Effect of the Artificial Intelligence Storytelling(AI+ST) Learning Method (인공지능 스토리텔링(AI+ST) 학습 효과에 관한 사례연구)

  • This study is a theoretical research to explore ways to effectively learn AI in the age of intelligent information driven by artificial intelligence (hereinafter referred to as AI). The emphasis is on presenting a teaching method to make AI education accessible not only to students majoring in mathematics, statistics, or computer science, but also to other majors such as humanities and social sciences and the general public. Given the need for 'Explainable AI(XAI: eXplainable AI)' and 'the importance of storytelling for a sensible and intelligent machine(AI)' by Patrick Winston at the MIT AI Institute [33], we can find the significance of research on AI storytelling learning model. To this end, we discuss the possibility through a pilot study targeting general students of an university in Daegu. First, we introduce the AI storytelling(AI+ST) learning method[30], and review the educational goals, the system of contents, the learning methodology and the use of new AI tools in the method. Then, the results of the learners are compared and analyzed, focusing on research questions: 1) Can the AI+ST learning method complement algorithm-driven or developer-centered learning methods? 2) Whether the AI+ST learning method is effective for students and thus help them to develop their AI comprehension, interest and application skills.

A Study on th e Creation of Floral Art Works Applying th e Meth ods of th e Narration and Visualization of the Experiences (경험의 서사화와 시각화 방법을 적용한 화예작품 창작의 연구)

  • This study is on the creation of floral art works based on the intuitive insight acquired by methodological process of ruminating the experienced meaningful events of the artists utilizing sensible perception. The researcher used the narration and visualization techniques. The narration process adopted the writing technique of subjective impression, emotion, stream of consciousness to capture sensations of subconscious state, which were applied in three steps of 'the exploration of experiences', 'the concretion of experiences', and 'the creation of meaning out of experiences'. The visualization process adopted collection, selection, classification, and interpretation of related images, which were applied in three methods of 'the creation of images', 'the utilization of intuition', and 'the perception through remembering'. Finally 5 art works of 'Hammock is Good', 'At the Rooftop with Warm Sunshine', 'Standing at the Waterside Alone', 'Dizziness at Hot Sand Field', and 'Having Good Time at a Botanical Garden'were created through the combination of these two methods mentioned above and complementary research and writing. The meaningfulness of this research lies in presenting methodological approaches of utilizing narration and visualization of experiences in art creation process.

Dans le Thomisme la nature humaine qui a la raison et la $volont{\acute{e}}$ a une $intentionnalit{\acute{e}}$ ver la fin ultime. De sorte que les actes humaines qui $corr{\grave{e}}spondent$ cette nature humaine a un $caract{\grave{e}}re$ du $d{\acute{e}}passement$ de soi visant toujours plus que le $pr{\acute{e}}sent$. Le fondement de cet acte du $d{\acute{e}}passement$ de soi est $l^{\prime}{\hat{a}}me$ rationelle qui est la forme substantielle de l'homme et de soi subsistante. Chez st. Thomas ce $caract{\grave{e}}re$ du $d{\acute{e}}passement$ a trois ${\acute{e}}taps$ distinctes : (1)le $d{\acute{e}}passement$ dans l'ordre du $progr{\grave{e}}s$ naturel (2)le $d{\acute{e}}passement$ de soi dans l'ordre morale (3)le $d{\acute{e}}passement$ de soi dans l'ordre de la religion. Le $d{\acute{e}}passement$ dans l'ordre du $progr{\grave{e}}s$ naturel apparaît d'abord au $caract{\grave{e}}re$ de $l^{\prime}{\hat{a}}me$ rationelle. St. Thomas $d{\acute{e}}finit$ les vertus rationelles comme $^{\prime}pl{\acute{e}}nitude$ dans le $f{\acute{e}}blesse$, parce qu'il $consid{\grave{e}}re$ la vertu rationelle comme $finalit{\acute{e}}$ des $facult{\acute{e}}s$ du sens $ext{\acute{e}}rieur$. L'homme par le sens $ext{\acute{e}}rieur$ reçoit des $esp{\grave{e}}ces$ sensibles(especies sensibilis), et $poss{\grave{e}}de$ les images. Puis cette images sensible devenant la $r{\acute{e}}alit{\acute{e}}$ spirituelle sous forme du $m{\acute{e}}moire$ et du souvenir, devient aussi la partie de son existence. Donc chez st. Thomas la vertue rationnelle n'est pas simplement un $facult{\acute{e}}$ $sp{\acute{e}}culative$, mais elle est dans l'ordre du devenir et du $pl{\acute{e}}nitude$. A cette raison st. Thomas compare la raison(ratio) comme $g{\acute{e}}n{\acute{e}}ration$(generatio) et l'intelleigence(intellectus) comme ${\hat{e}}tre$(esse). C'est-${\grave{a}}$-dire la raison $d{\acute{e}}passe$ le sensible et l'intelligence $d{\acute{e}}passe$ la raison. Le $d{\acute{e}}passement$ de soi dans l'ordre morale $li{\acute{e}}$ au $progr{\grave{e}}s$ de la conscience. Chez st. Thomas la perception de l'objet $ext{\acute{e}}rieur$ ayant pour but d'avoir conscience de soi, se perfectionne ${\grave{a}}$ ceci. D'avoir conscience de soi signifie d'avoir $l^{\prime}identit{\acute{e}}$ de soi, et de-$l{\grave{a}}$ apparaît l'acte moral en tnat qu'acte $sp{\acute{e}}cifique$ humain. La raison pour laquelle la vie morale elle-$m{\hat{e}}me$ a un $caract{\grave{e}}$ du $d{\acute{e}}passement$, c'est que l'acte humaine qui corresfonde ${\grave{a}}$ $l^{\prime}identit{\acute{e}}$ du soi est une vie qui vise toujours plus que le $pr{\acute{e}}sent$ ou $l^{\prime}id{\acute{e}}al$. Quant au problem du $d{\acute{e}}passement$ dans l'ordre de la religion, chez st. Thomas en raison de $l^{\prime}affinit{\acute{e}}$ entre Dieu et l'homme, $o{\grave{u}}$ il y a des vertues infuses(virtutes infusas), il y a une sorte du $d{\acute{e}}passement$ religieux. Car ces vertues infuses signifie la communication entre Dieu(${\hat{E}}tre$ absolu) et l'homme(${\hat{e}}tre$ fine) et cela signifie le $d{\acute{e}}passement$ de l'humain vers le divin. Cette $id{\acute{e}}e$ thomiste permet de penser que $o{\grave{u}}$ il y a un $d{\acute{e}}passement$ de soi dans la vie religuse d'une personne, il y a une intervention $r{\acute{e}}elle$ de la providence divine. Cette $pens{\acute{e}}e$ thomiste sera alors un $caract{\grave{e}}$ $r{\acute{e}}aliste$ face ${\grave{a}}$ la $pens{\acute{e}}e$ $id{\acute{e}}aliste$ qui n'admette que le $d{\acute{e}}passement$ absolu comme $d{\acute{e}}passement$ religieux.

Radiation, Energy, and Entropy Exchange in an Irrigated-Maize Agroecosystem in Nebraska, USA (미국 네브라스카의 관개된 옥수수 농업생태계의 복사, 에너지 및 엔트로피의 교환)

  • An irrigated-maize agroecosystem is viewed as an open thermodynamic system upon which solar radiation impresses a large gradient that moves the system away from equilibrium. Following the imperative of the second law of thermodynamics, such agroecosystem resists and reduces the externally applied gradient by using all means of this nature-human coupled system acting together as a nonequilibrium dissipative process. The ultimate purpose of our study is to test this hypothesis by examining the energetics of agroecosystem growth and development. As a first step toward this test, we employed the eddy covariance flux data from 2003 to 2014 at the AmeriFlux NE1 irrigated-maize site at Mead, Nebraska, USA, and analyzed the energetics of this agroecosystem by scrutinizing its radiation, energy and entropy exchange. Our results showed: (1) more energy capture during growing season than non-growing season, and increasing energy capture through growing season until senescence; (2) more energy flow activity within and through the system, providing greater potential for degradation; (3) higher efficiency in terms of carbon uptake and water use through growing season until senescence; and (4) the resulting energy degradation occurred at the expense of increasing net entropy accumulation within the system as well as net entropy transfer out to the surrounding environment. Under the drought conditions in 2012, the increased entropy production within the system was accompanied by the enhanced entropy transfer out of the system, resulting in insignificant net entropy change. Drought mitigation with more frequent irrigation shifted the main route of entropy transfer from sensible to latent heat fluxes, yielding the production and carbon uptake exceeding the 12-year mean values at the cost of less efficient use of water and light.

Exploring the Use of Traditional Science Knowledge by 'Being a Commentator on Korean Traditional Science Culture' Activities (우리 과학 문화 해설사 되어보기 활동을 통한 전통 과학 지식의 교육적 활용 방안 탐색)

  • This study was carried out to identify the reality of students' understanding of Korean traditional scientific knowledge (TSK), the educational contexts influenced their understanding of TSK, and their sense of value of TSK, through the science activity 'Being a commentator on Korean traditional scientific culture' as a way of finding direction to apply TSK to science education while maintaining the inherent meaning of our traditional science. Seventh grade students have discovered TSK contents in Changdeok Palace, prepared their own scripts for seven months, and finally, explained to fifth to sixth grade students. The video recordings of all lessons, scripts of explanation, reports of field activities, and individual interviews were all analyzed. Students understood TSK in four viewpoints: the traditional view of nature, the traditional science and technology, the traditional life using science, and the natural science contents. During their activities, communication with peers or elders both in classroom and in Changdeok Palace, the interaction with place, and the sense of responsibility as a commentator helped students understand the scientific aspects of TSK, form contextual and sensible scientific knowledge, and apprehend various scientific explanations of contents. Depending on their internalization of experiences, the students' experiences produced three types of interpretation: delivery, persuasion, and understanding. Students formed their TSK sense of value as scientific characteristics, the need of new perspective about science, the need to protect and maintain TSK as our culture. The results of this study show that TSK can provide integrated and actual contextual education in science education and can be used to understand the cultural diversity of scientific and scientific methods and the characteristics of oriental scientific thinking. In addition, the simultaneous approach of TSK and school science to traditional culture can contribute to ideal concept formation and subjective attitude toward our traditional culture.
