  • Purpose: This is a descriptive survey research study that identifies the intrapersonal, interpersonal, and organizational and community factors affecting the instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) in community-dwelling seniors. Methods: The study used data from a 2017 national survey of senior citizens, and includes 10,299 subjects aged 65 years or more. Complex sampling was performed to increase accuracy of the population, and hierarchical logistic regression was performed to identify the factors affecting IADL in seniors. Results: Amongst the organizational and community factors, we determined that the number of health centers, welfare facilities for senior citizens, hospital beds, and community sport facilities affected IADL in seniors, even after adjusting for intrapersonal and interpersonal factors. Conclusion: Helping seniors to maintain IADL independence for a longer duration is essential for their physical and social independence. Therefore, when establishing and developing policies for health promotion programs, efforts should be undertaken to actively reflect the level of IADL functions, and to create an accessible health and medical welfare environment by considering characteristics of senior citizens for operating programs.

  • Wearable biosensors have the potential to non-invasively and continuously monitor seniors' stress in their daily interaction with the urban environment, thereby enabling to address the stress and ultimately advance their outdoor mobility. However, current wearable biosensor-based stress detection methods have several drawbacks in field application due to their dependence on batch-learning algorithms. First, these methods train a single classifier, which might not account for multiple subjects' different physiological reactivity to stress. Second, they require a great deal of computational power to store and reuse all previous data for updating the signle classifier. To address this issue, we tested the feasibility of online multi-task learning (OMTL) algorithms to identify multiple seniors' stress from electrodermal activity (EDA) collected by a wristband-type biosensor in a daily trip setting. As a result, OMTL algorithms showed the higher test accuracy (75.7%, 76.2%, and 71.2%) than a batch-learning algorithm (64.8%). This finding demonstrates that the OMTL algorithms can strengthen the field applicability of the wearable biosensor-based stress detection, thereby contributing to better understanding the seniors' stress in the urban environment and ultimately advancing their mobility.

  • We examined the decision-making capacity of seniors of consent to oriental clinical research. This study was performed in order to improve the quality of ethical aspects before obtaining informed consent. Oriental investigators interviewed 251 seniors who participated in Sasang clinical research. The questionnaire was about the capacity of consent and the subjective awareness of informed consent. Two hundred fifteen out of 250 questionnaires were collected. One hundred thirty four(62.3%) seniors had the capacity of consent to research and 81(37.7%) seniors did not pass. The subjective awareness of informed consent in having the capacity group is $78.02{\pm}12.92$ and not having group is $72.17{\pm}9.17$. The investigation of senior capacity of consent was aimed at protecting seniors' interests and completing investigators' ethical responsibilities. This study found that only 62.3% of senior participants had the capacity of consent. This investigation will be expected to raise the importance of seniors' capacity of consent. Also we expect methods and procedures for capacity assessment of informed consent to be followed for increasing quality of clinical research.
