Multimodal Discourse: A Visual Design Analysis of Two Advertising Images

  • The area of discourse analysis has long neglected the value of images as a semiotic resource in communication. This paper suggests that like language, images are rich in meaning potential and are governed by visual grammar structures which can be utilized to decode the meanings of images. Employing a theoretical framework in visual communication, two digital images are examined for their representational and interactive dimensions and the dimensions' relation to the magazine advertisement genre. The results show that the framework identified narrative and conceptual processes, relations between participants and viewers, and symbolic attributes of the images, which all contribute to the sociological interpretations of the images. The identities and relationships between viewers and participants suggested in the images signify desirable qualities that may be associated to the product of the advertiser. The findings support the theory of visual grammar and highlight the potential of images to convey multi-layered meanings.

  • 본 논문은 텔레비전 프로그램에서 방송되고 있는 데이트 쇼 프로그램을 기호학적으로 분석하고, 다양한 사회문화적 현상이 담고 있는 특성을 살펴보는데 목적을 갖고 있다. 본 연구의 분석대상인 데이트 쇼 프로그램은 케이블 채널 TVn의 <러브 스위치>의 텍스트 분석"을 통해서 젠더의 구분에 따른 특정한 사고방식과 행위방식에서 드러나고 있는 남녀의 구조적 특성을 살펴보고, 텔레비전 문화가 어떻게 우리의 의식세계를 지배하고 발전되고 있는지를 고찰하고자 한다.

Fashion Design Expression of Wassily Kandinsky's Paintings -Focus on Music Visualization -

  • This study examines music visualization characteristics appearing in Giorgio Armani's S/S 2000 Collection and Genny's F/W 2000 Collection, which elicited and reinterpreted the characteristics through an analysis of Kandinsky's paintings. Study results are as follows. First, music visualization characteristics were extracted through an analysis of Kandinsky's works to examine music visualization that appears in contemporary fashion. Further analysis of Kandinsky's works were done in regards to music visualization (Impression, Improvisation, and Composition), and music visualization characteristics were categorized into 'spatial element', 'mobility', and 'overlap'. Second, the analysis of contemporary fashion with a spatial component showed that space was often clothed through color contrasts that highlighted concise and playful effects. Emphasis on line and three-dimensional effects were shown by overlapping lines and costume pleats with exposure expressed by semiotic forms and fabric character4istics. Third, the analysis of clothes that express mobility shows that they commonly express mobility through free color arrangements and a shading of colors with playfulness. The effects of emphasis, uniformity, and exposure were shown through the gloss and transformation of fabric that emphasized fabric characteristics; in addition, the effect of simplicity, three-dimensionality, and uniformity were expressed by adopting the forms of geometric shapes. Fourth, the analysis of clothes that manifest the overlap showed a predominant overlapping of colors and fabric. The esthetic effects of playfulness and exposure were emphasized through colors, shapes, and lines.

스타크래프트에 관한 기호학적 분석 : 그레마스의 기호 사각형을 응용한 의미분석 (A Semiotic Analysis of Starcraft : Sense Analysis by Greimas's Carre Semiotique)

  • 그레마스의 기호 사각형과 구조생성기호학은 언어는 물론 비언어 텍스트 분석에도 유용하기에, 이를 활용하여 스타크래프트를 분석해보고자 하였다. 가장 1차적으로 필요한 작업이 게임 텍스트에 대한 분절이었는데, 본고에서는 크리스티앙 메츠의 거대 통합체 이론과 원칙을 차용하여 게임 텍스트 분절의 기준을 삼았다. 스타크래프트의 기호 사각형을 도출한 결과 스타크래프트는 전쟁이라는 의미축을 중심으로 하여 생산과 파괴라는 기본적인 의미범주를 통하여 의미를 생성하는 것으로 파악되었다. 이러한 의미작용체계에 대한 분석은 향후의 설화수준, 담화수준에서의 의미작용체계분석과 맞물려 총체적인 스타크래프트의 의미생성과정을 파악하는데 디딤돌이 될 것으로 기대된다.

한중일 전통가구에 나타난 표현과 의미의 기호학적 분석 - 17~19세기 수납가구를 중심으로 - (Semiotic Analysis of Expressive Features and Structural Meanings in Traditional Furniture of Korea, China and Japan - Focus on the Storage Furniture from 17th to 19th century -)

  • The study aimed to find the fundamental differences of aesthetics in Korea, China, and Japan by analyzing expressive features and structural meanings of the storage furniture from $17^{th}$ to $19^{th}$ century. The study was performed in four steps; analysis of expressive features, isotopic analysis, semantic structure analysis, and comprehensive interpretation. The results showed that three countries had linear shapes with curvilinear elements, closed forms with open spaces, natural material hues with change of tone or color, and symmetrical forms with asymmetrical patterns and structures in common. Korea comparatively accented on the natural material colors and wood grains. China stressed on the big and wide faces using three-dimensional carving. Japan accented on the linear elements with strong color contrast and decorative metal fixtures. These features were caused by the traditional thoughts and according aesthetic principles. Korea and China were affected by the Confucianism focused on establishing the order of rank. Meanwhile, Japan was more influenced by the Buddhism emphasized on the individuality and communication. Therefore, the differences of the expressive features in furniture among the three countries were inevitable consequences of the different ideologies.

과학 교과서에 사용된 화살표의 의미 (The Meaning of the Arrows Used in Science Textbooks)

  • Elementary teachers should lower their levels of expectation and indeed perspectives to those of elementary students. Even in relation to basic symbols, such as an arrow, can be read differently by teachers or students. Semiotics deals with the creation of meaning in rotation to symbols and signs. This study introduces semiotic analysis to the study of science textbooks. Elementary science textbooks contain a great many inscriptions, such as photographs and cartoons, even more than texts, such as words and sentences. Inscriptions employ various social conventions such as arrows, auxiliary lines, etc. Some conventional signs, however, hold different or indeed multiple meanings than the textbook author intended the sign to have. The arrows used in science textbook, mainly in the inscriptions, were analyzed and classified according to their intended meaning. The results indicated that teachers should use such arrows more carefully in lessons with elementary students.

의상에 있어서 인체“부재”의 기호학적 의미 분석-작품 사례분석을 중심으로- (The semiotic meaning analysis of body“absence”in clothing)

  • 의복은 단순한 상징적 체계, 즉 입는다는 기능성에 벗어나 미학의 한 위상으로, 의미를 전달하는 기호코드로 새로운 자리 매김을 하고 있다. 이러한 현상을 파악하고자, 의상에서 인체의 부재를 통해 전달하고자 하는 의미를 강조한 3점의 작품을 분석한 결과, 1) 입음/걸려짐, 긍정적/부정적, 능동적/수동적, 있음/없음을 통해 남성/여성의 의미를 대립시키고, 2)사회적인/사적인, 인체/옷을 통해 남성과 여성을 적절함/부적절함, 주체적인/부수적인 의미로 환원시켰다. 3) 하나의/다수의, 단순함/다양함, 제한적인/자유로운 의미를 통해 옷 입는 방법에 대한 사유를 하고 있음을 알 수 있었다.

수학적 추론으로서의 가추법 (Abduction As A Mathematical Resoning.)

  • This Study takes Peirce' abduction which is Phenomenology' first reasoning mode, as a part of mathematical reasoning with deduction and induction. Abduction(retroduction, hypothesis, presumption, and originary argument) leads a case through a result and a rule, while deduction leads a result through a rule and a case and induction leads a rule through a case and a result. Polya(1954) involved generalization, specialization, and analogy within induction, but this paper contain analogy in abduction. And metaphors and metonymies are also contained in abduction, in which metaphors are contained in analogy. Metaphors and metonymies are applied to semiosis i.e. the signification of mathematical signs. Semiotic analysis for a student's problem solving showed the semiosis with metaphors and metonimies. Thus, abductions should be regarded as a mathematical reasoning, and we must utilize abductions in mathematical teaming since abductions are thought as a natural reasoning by students.

  • 수학교육학 연구 중에서 기호학적 연구는 Saussure, Peirce, Frege의 기호학에 근거하고 있음을 알게 된다. 이들 선행연구는 기호학의 관점에서 개념을 다루어 왔지만 기호학의 요소들의 관계와 개념의 형성과 발전 과정은 여전히 많은 부분이 모호하고 베일에 싸여 있다. 본 논문은 기호학의 관점에서 기호학의 한 요소인 표현에 의해서 개념이 어떻게 형성되고 발전하는지를 보이고자 하였으며 이 과정에서 기호학의 세 요소인 표현, 개념, 대상의 관계를 부분적으로 조명하고자 하였다.

  • In this study of the documentation process, a toddler's behavior was interpreted through use of text and picture both of which are subjective representations of reality. Two teachers deconstructed and reconstructed their knowledge of a photographed toddler by first referring to scientific theories from a text. They used these theories to analyze markings drawn on paper by the toddler in the photograph. But, the theories from the text were transformed into a new theory in the documentation process of reflecting on the history of markings in different contexts. Thus, the semiotics of pictures and texts changed in addition to change in meanings. This demonstrates the variability of signs, as in the concept of "rhizome" (Deleuze and Guattari, 1999).
