Forward slip is an important parameter often used in rolling-speed control models for tandem hot strip rolling mills. In a hot strip mill, on-line measurement of strip speed is inherently very difficult. Therefore, for the set-up of the finishing mill, a forward slip model is used to calculate the strip speed from roll circumferential velocity at each mill stand. Due to its complexity, most previous researches have used semi-empirical methods in determining values for the forward slip. Although these investigations may be useful in process design and control, they do not have a theoretical basis. In the present study, a better forward slip model has been developed, which provides for a better set-up and more precise control of the mill. Factors such as neutral point, friction coefficient, width spread, shape of deformation zone in the roll bite are incorporated into the model. Implementation of the new forward slip model for the control of a 7-stand hot strip tandem rolling mill shows significant improvement in roll speed set-up accuracy.

As the demand for new and renewable energy increases due to the depletion of fossil fuels, solar power generation, a core energy source for new and renewable energy, requires research on solar modules for high output power generation. In this paper, the electrical characteristics of solar cell strip at the edge and in the center of single-crystal silicon having a semi-square shape were analyzed. The cell strip located in the center showed the efficiency increase by 0.26% compared to the cell strip at the edge of the solar cell. A shingled photovoltaic module was manufactured for each cell strip. As a result, the output power of the module using the cell strip located in the center was higher by 0.992%.

Stress intensity factor of semi-infinite parallel crack propagation with constant velocity in dissimilar orthotropic strip under out-of-plane clamped desplacement is investigated. Using Fourier integral transforms the boundary value problem is derived by a pair of dual integral equation and finally reduced to a single Wiener-Hopf equation. By applying Wiener-Hopf technique the equation is solved. Applying this result the asymptotic stress fields near the crack tip are determined, from which the stress intensity factor is obtained in closed form. The more the ratio of anisotropy or the ratio of bi-material shear modulus increase in the main material including the crack, the more the stress intensity factor increases. Discontinuity in the stress intensity factor is found as the parallel crack approaches the interface. In special case, the results of isotropic materials agree well with those by the previous researchers.

In this study, the semi-analytical finite strip method is adopted to examine the free vibration of cylindrical shells made up of functionally graded material. The properties of functionally graded shells are assumed to be temperature-dependent and vary continuously in the thickness direction according to a simple power law distribution in terms of the volume fraction of ceramic and metal. The material properties of the shells and stiffeners are assumed to be continuously graded in the thickness direction. Theoretical formulations based on the smeared stiffeners technique and the classical shell theory with first-order shear deformation theory which accounts for through thickness shear flexibility are employed. The finite strip method is applied to five different shell theories, namely, Donnell, Reissner, Sanders, Novozhilov, and Teng. The approximate procedure is compared favorably with three-dimensional finite elements. Finally, a detailed numerical study is carried out to bring out the effects of power-law index of the functional graded material, stiffeners, and geometry of the shells on the difference between various shell theories. Finally, the importance of choosing the shell theory in simulating the functionally graded cylindrical shells is addressed.
This paper is presented to solve the buckling problem of functionally graded truncated conical shells subjected to displacement-dependent pressure which remains normal to the shell middle surface throughout the deformation process by the semi-analytical finite strip method. Material properties are assumed to be temperature dependent, and varied continuously in the thickness direction according to a simple power law distribution in terms of the volume fraction of a ceramic and metal. The governing equations are derived based on first-order shear deformation theory which accounts for through thickness shear flexibility with Sanders-type of kinematic nonlinearity. The element linear and geometric stiffness matrices are obtained using virtual work expression for functionally graded materials. The load stiffness also called pressure stiffness matrix which accounts for variation of load direction is derived for each strip and after assembling, global load stiffness matrix of the shell which may be un-symmetric is formed. The un-symmetric parts which are due to load non-uniformity and unconstrained boundaries have been separated. A detailed parametric study is carried out to quantify the effects of power-law index of functional graded material and shell geometry variations on the difference between follower and non-follower lateral buckling pressures. The results indicate that considering pressure stiffness which arises from follower action of pressure causes considerable reduction in estimating buckling pressure.
This paper compared with the hydrodynamic interference acting on the semi-submersible element model with 1-lowerhull and 2-columns. In this case, calculation are applying the strip method and 3-dimensional source distribution method. As the wave frequency and the distance between increase, the influence effects of parts upon each other decrease and approach the results calculated by using the strip method. Thus, it can be prepared for the investigation of new practical method of investigation of new practical method of hydrodynamic forces acting on huge structures.
The finite strip transition matrix technique, a semi analytical method, is employed to obtain the buckling loads and the natural frequencies of symmetric cross-ply laminated composite plates with edges elastically restrained against both translation and rotation. To illustrate the accuracy and the validation of the method several example of cross play laminated composite plates were analyzed. The buckling loads and the frequency parameters are presented and compared with available results in the literature. The convergence study and the excellent agreement with known results show the reliability of the purposed technique.

This paper proposed the design of a new window signage system architecture, which utilized a window of a building, with attached LED for visible light communication. In this paper, the proposed method using the LED strip to transmit light data and receive the data through a HMD with a smart device camera. The LED strip attached to the existing building window, as a part of semi-transparent signage. Semi-transparent signage based on a controllable LED strip-modules and attached to the window used to provide entertainment contents and the information service to people through optical camera communication (OCC) as well. Also, this work suggests using the camera supplied Head Mounted Device (HMD) as an OCC receiver. The LED attached window signage system structure described in this paper can be utilized in various buildings infrastructure like house, shopping areas, industrial building, etc.
This paper presents the theoretical developments of an exact finite strip for the buckling and initial post-buckling analyses of isotropic flat plates. The so-called exact finite strip is assumed to be simply supported out-of-plane at the loaded ends. The strip is developed based on the concept that it is effectively a plate. The present method, which is designated by the name Full-analytical Finite Strip Method in this paper, provides an efficient and extremely accurate buckling solution. In the development process, the Von-Karman's equilibrium equation is solved exactly to obtain the buckling loads and the corresponding form of out-of-plane buckling deflection modes. The investigation of thin flat plate buckling behavior is then extended to an initial post-buckling study with the assumption that the deflected form immediately after the buckling is the same as that obtained for the buckling. It is noted that in the present method, only one of the calculated out-of-plane buckling deflection modes, corresponding to the lowest buckling load, i.e., the first mode is used for the initial post-buckling study. Thus, the postbuckling study is effectively a single-term analysis, which is attempted by utilizing the so-called semi-energy method. In this method, the Von-Karman's compatibility equation governing the behavior of isotropic flat plates is used together with a consideration of the total strain energy of the plate. Through the solution of the compatibility equation, the in-plane displacement functions which are themselves related to the Airy stress function are developed in terms of the unknown coefficient in the assumed out-of-plane deflection function. These in-plane and out-of-plane deflected functions are then substituted in the total strain energy expressions and the theorem of minimum total potential energy is applied to solve for the unknown coefficient. The developed method is subsequently applied to analyze the initial postbuckling behavior of some representative thin flat plates for which the results are also obtained through the application of a semi-analytical finite strip method. Through the comparison of the results and the appropriate discussion, the knowledge of the level of capability of the developed method is significantly promoted.
A semi-infinite interfacial crack propagated with constant velocity in two bonded anisotropic strip under out-of-plane clamped displacements is analyzed. The asymptotic stress and displacement fields near the crack tip are obtained, where the results get more general expressions applicable not only to isotropic/orthotropic materials but also to the extent of the anisotropic material having one plane of elastic symmetry for the interfacial crack. The dynamic stress intensity factor is obtained as a closed form, which is decreased as the velocity of crack propagation increases. The critical velocity where the stress intensity factor comes to zero is obtained, which agrees with the lower value between the critical values of parallel crack merged in the material 1 and 2 adjacent to the interface. The dynamic energy release rate is also obtained as a form related to the stress intensity factor.
