  • We studied the plating properties of Sn-Pb solder according to the shape of the Cu wire's cross-section for photovoltaic ribbon. The thickness of the Sn-Pb layer largely decreased to 29% on a curved Cu surface, compared to a flat Cu surface. This phenomenon is caused by the geometrical decrease in the contact angle of the liquid Sn-Pb solder and an increase in the surface energy of the solid/vapor on the curved Cu surface. We suggest a new ribbon's design where the Cu wire's cross-section is a semi-ellipse. These semi-ellipse ribbons can decrease the use of Sn-Pb solder to 64% and increase the photovoltaic efficiency, by reducing the contact area between the ribbon and cell, to 84%. We also see an improvement of reflectivity in the curved surface.

  • This paper presents analysis of the interaction between tunnel and Qanat with a particular interest for the optimization of Qanat shape using the discrete element code, PFC2D, and the results will be compared with the FEM results of PLAXIS2D. For these concerns, using software PFC2D based on Discrete Element Method (DEM), a model with dimension of 100m 100 m was prepared. A circular tunnel with dimension of 9 m was situated 20 m below the ground surface. Also one Qanat was situated perpendicularly above the tunnel roof. Distance between Qanat center and ground surface was 8 m. Five different shapes for Qanat were selected i.e., square, semi-circular, vertical ellipse, circular and horizontal ellipse. Confining pressure of 5 MPa was applied to the model. The vertical displacement of balls situated in ground surface was picked up to measure the ground subsidence. Also two measuring circles were situated at the tunnel roof and at the Qanat roof to check the vertical displacements. The properties of the alluvial soil of Tehran city are: γdry=19 (KN/㎥), E= 750 (kg/㎠), ν=0.35, c=0.3(kg/㎠), φ=34°. In order to validate the DEM results, a comparison between the numerical results (obtained in this study) and analytical and field monitoring have been done. The PFC2D results are compared with the FEM results. The results shows that when Qanat has rectangular shape, the tensile stress concentration at the Qanat corners has maximum value while it has minimum value for vertical ellipse shape. The ground subsidence for Qanat rectangular shape has maximum value while it has minimum value for ellipse shape of Qanat. The vertical displacements at the tunnel roof for Qanat rectangular shape has maximum value while it has minimum value for ellipse shape of Qanat. Historical shape of Qante approved the finding of this research.

  • In this paper, a full-scale K-joint specimen was tested to failure under cyclic combined axial and in-plane bending loads. In the fatigue test, the crack developments were monitored step by step using the alternating current potential drop (ACPD) technique. Using Paris' law, stress intensity factor, which is a fracture parameter to be frequently used by many designers to predict the integrity and residual life of tubular joints, can be obtained from experimental test results of the crack growth rate. Furthermore, a scheme of automatic mesh generation for a cracked K-joint is introduced, and numerical analysis of stress intensity factor for the K-joint specimen has then been carried out. In the finite element analysis, J-integral method is used to estimate the stress intensity factors along the crack front. The numerical stress intensity factor results have been validated through comparing them with the experimental results. The comparison shows that the proposed numerical model can produce reasonably accurate stress intensity factor values. The effects of different crack shapes on the stress intensity factors have also been investigated, and it has been found that semi-ellipse is suitable and accurate to be adopted in numerical analysis for the stress intensity factor. Therefore, the proposed model in this paper is reliable to be used for estimating the stress intensity factor values of cracked tubular K-joints for design purposes.

  • This study is based on a series of numerical modeling experiments to understand the tidal circulation in the Kangjin Bay (KB). The tidal circulation in the KB is mostly controlled by the inflow from two channels, Noryang and Daebang which introduce the open ocean water into the northern part of the KB with relatively strong tidal current, while in the southern part of the KB, shallowest region of the entire study area, weak tidal current prevails. The model prediction of the sea level agrees with observed records at skill scores exceeding 90 % in terms of the four major tidal constituents (M2, S2, K1, O1). However, the skill scores for the tidal current show relatively lower values of 87, 99, 59, 23 for the semi-major axes of the constituents, respectively. The tidal ellipse parameters in the KB are such that the semi-major axes of the ellipse for M2 range from 1.7 to 38.5 cm/s and those for S2 range from 0.5 to 14.4 cm/s. The orientations of the major-axes show parallel with the local isobath. The eccentricity values at various grid points of ellipses for M2 and S2 are very low with 0.2 and 0.06 on the average, respectively illustrating that the tidal current in the KB is strongly rectilinear. The magnitude of the tidal residual current speed in the KB is on the order of a few cm/s and its distribution pattern is very complex. One of the most prominent features is found to be the counter-clockwise eddy recirculation cell at the mouth of the Daebang Channel.

  • We consider incompressible, inviscid, stratified shear flows in β plane. First, we obtained an unbounded instability region intersect with semi-ellipse region. Second, we obtained a bounded instability regions depending on Coriolis, stratification parameters and basic velocity profile. Third, we obtained a criterion for wave stability. This has been illustrated with standard examples. Also, we obtained upper bound for growth rate.

  • This paper describes a line element planar antenna with three frequency bands. To obtain broadband characteristics, a modified planar antenna that has semi-elliptical elements based on the characteristics of a line element planar antenna is proposed and analyzed by the finite difference time domain method. Return loss characteristics are discussed as functions of the eccentricity values of semi-ellipse at each element. The broadbanding of the modified planar antenna is implemented based on the results. The planar antenna with three systems (an 800 MHz band cellular phone, a third-generation cellular phone, and a 2.4 GHz band wireless LAN system) is considered as an application example.

  • This paper presents the preliminary results of an experimental study on surface crack growth under fatigue loadings. The objective of this paper is to assess the effect of the initial crack size on crack propagation behaviors. Transparent PMMA plate speciments with shallow circular arc notch were used. Crack growth behaviors were observed and measured in two directions by travelling microscopes. The fatigue crack initiated at the deepest part on the initial arc shaped notch and then propagated to depth direction as well as spreading gradually along the notch tip. A considerable number of cycles was needed until the depth crack spreaded to the surface notch tip. When the fatigue crack reached the surface notch tip the crack front became an approximate semi-ellipse, primary semi-elliptical crack. Test results suggest that the relationships between fatigue crack growth rate and stress intensity factor range in both directions can be expressed by power law (Paris) and that relationship in width direction depends upon the crack ratios a$_{1}$/b$_{1}$, of the primary semi-elliptical crack. The relationship between the nondimensional crack lengths in both directions can be represented as the formula: (a/t)$^{n}$ =B(2b/W+A) where n and A are constants and B is seems to be depended upon the crack ratio a$_{1}$/b$_{1}$.

  • Early-type galaxies (ETGs) are supposed to follow the virial relation M ~ sigma^2 * R_e, with M being the galaxy mass, sigma being the stellar velocity dispersion, and R_e being the (2D) effective radius. I apply this relation to (a) the ATLAS3D sample and (b) the sample of Saglia et al. (2016). The two datasets reveal a statistically significant tilt of the empirical relation relative to the theoretical virial relation such that M ~ (sigma^2 * R_e)^0.92 with zero intrinsic scatter. This tilt disappears when replacing R_e with the semi-major axis of the projected half-light ellipse, a. Accordingly, a, not R_e, is the correct proxy for the scale radius of ETGs. By geometry, this implies that early-type galaxies are axisymmetric and oblate in general, in agreement with recent results from modeling based on kinematics and light distributions.

  • This paper introduces experimental investigates of an accident pattern for the distributing cross linking-polyethylene(XLPE) cable terminations considering product liability(PL) law environment. The influence of defects such as thickness and length decrease of XLPE, an impurity on XLPE and the gap between stress-con of housing and semi-conductor on insulating properties of the termination have been studied. The thickness and length decrease of XLPE decrease ac breakdown strengths. Breakdown traces of XLPE that is damaged by knife displayed ellipse shape. The gap of between stress-con and semiconductor deteriorates dielectric strength of XLPE seriously.

  • In this study, the inertial properties of fully filled liquid in a tank were studied based on the potential theory. The analytic solution was obtained for the rectangular tank, and the numerical solutions using Green's 2nd identity were obtained for other shapes. The inertia of liquid behaves like solid in recti-linear acceleration. But under rotational acceleration, the moment of inertia of liquid becomes small compared to that of solid. The shapes of tank investigated in this study were ellipse, rectangle, hexagon, and octagon with various aspect ratios. The numerical solutions were compared with analytic solution, and an ad hoc semi-analytical approximate formula is proposed herein and this formula gives very good predictions for the moment of inertia of the liquid in a tank of several different geometrical shapes. The results of this study will be useful in analyzing of the motion of LNG/LPG tanker, liquid cargo ship, and damaged ship.
