In this study, to fabricate the semi-solid Al alloy, the 3phase-2poles electromagnetic stirring system was adopted. The changes of primary grain size, aspect ratio, standard deviation, hardness and the size morphology of eutectic Si with pouring temperatures and input voltages were investigated. At the same pouring temperature, with increasing input voltage, aspect ratio, standard deviation and primary grain size were decreased. The optimum condition for fabrication of semisolid Al alloys by EMS horizontal continuous casting process was determined that the input voltage was 220V and the pouring temperature was 68$0^{\circ}C$. At this optimum conditions the primary grain size was 54$\mu\textrm{m}$, the aspect ratio was 1.56 and the size of eutectic Si was 0.5$\mu\textrm{m}$. The micro-hardness of the Al alloy was 72.1 Hv. The semi-solid A356 Al alloy which has very low aspect ratio and standard deviation value could be fabricated by adopting the EMS horizontal continuous casting facility that was manufactured for this study.
The effluent from anaerobic digestion contains organic nitrogen and phosphorus, which are both required for growth of Spirulina platensis. Effluent (20%) from the upflow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) from a pig farm, supplemented with 4.5 g/l sodium bicarbonate ($NaHCO_3$) and 0.2 g/l urea fertilizer (46:0:0, N:P:K), was found to be not only a suitable medium for the growth of Spirulina platensis but also a low-cost alternative. Cost calculation showed that this medium is 4.4 times cheaper than modifized Zarrouk's medium. The average productivities of a semi-continuous culture grown under outdoor conditions in a 6-1 scale and a 100-1 pilot scale were 19.9 $g/m^2/d$ and 12 $g/m^2/d$, respectively. In addition, the biomass of organisms grown in UASB effluent contained approximately 57.9% protein, 1.12% $\gamma$-linolenic acid, and 19.5% phycocyanin. The average rates of bicarbonate, total nitrogen, and phosphorus removal were 380 mg/l/d, 34 mg/l/d, and 4 mg/l/d, respectively.

Characteristics of sulfur-based autotrophic denitrification in a semi-continuous type reactor and the kinetic parameters were studied. Enriched autotrophic denitrifying culture was used for the reactor operation. Biomass growth on sulfur particles and in the liquid medium was monitored using the DAPI staining method. From the result of ion concentration changes and the biomass growth, maximum specific growth rate, ${\mu}_{max}$, and the half velocity constant, $K_M$, were estimated as $0.61\;d^{-1}$ and 3.66 mg/L, respectively. Growth yield coefficient, Y values for electron acceptor and donor were found as 0.49 gVSS/g N and 0.16 gVSS/g S. The biomass showed specific denitrification rate, ranging 0.86-1.13 gN/g VSS-d. A half-order equation was found to best simulate the denitrification process in the packed bed reactor operated in the semi-continuous mode.
Continuous casting is a process where molten metal is solidified into a semi-finished billet on a large scale with either a rectangular or round cross section for subsequent processing. The use of continuous casting provides an opportunity for producing material on a practical industrial scale with lower cost than conventional casting. In the current study, the material was fabricated by continuous casting and subsequent extrusion. Tensile tests were conducted on continuous cast ZK60A after extrusion over a range of strain rates at temperatures from 473K to 623K. The alloy exhibits a quasi-superplastic behavior with a maximum recorded elongation of ~250% at 523K when tested with an initial strain rate of $10^{-5}/s$. The experiments give a strain rate sensitivity exponent of 0.3~0.4 and an activation energy of 108 kJ/mol. From the current investigation, it was found that the high-temperature plastic flow of the ZK60A is controlled by a dislocation viscous glide mechanism.

This study is to test the applicability of SLURP (Semi-distributed Land Use-based runoff Process) model that is a semi-distributed, continuous hydrologic model developed by Kite (1997). The Soyanggang-dam watershed ($2,694km^2$) was selected. The DEM, land-cover map, monthly NDVI from NOAA/AVHRR and daily meteorological data of 2001 were prepared. By using the parameter optimization technique, SCE-UA (Shuffled Complex Evolution-University of Arizona), the model was calibrated and the Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency was 0.73.
Butyl acetate is produced from acetic acid and butanol via an esterification reaction in a reactive distillation column. Entrainer can be used for efficient removal of produced water from the reaction region, leading to significant improvement of the column performance. Batch reactive distillation has clear advantages over continuous one in terms of flexibility and adaptability in a small plant. We studied batch and semi-batch reactive distillation processes through process simulation and pilot-scale experiments. We investigated process configuration and type of entrainer for improvement of the column performance and suggested a novel cyclic operation strategy using the semi-batch reactive distillation column. The cyclic strategy was shown to give relatively high production rate and stable operation.
The purpose of this study is to develop a continuous process for sorbitol production using dried Zymomonas mobilis immobilized in K-carrageenan. The methods of glularaldehyde cross-linking of enzymes in CTAB (celyltrimetylammoniumbromide) treated cells immobilized in K-carrageenan showed stability for the production of sorbitol for 30 days of operation. K-carrageenan beads entrapping permeabilized cells were dried to Improve bead rigidity and storage stability. A semi-batch process with dry beads was carried out and only a small loss of enzyme activity (less than 8%) was observed during 72h. The value of Vmax for the dry K-carrageenan beads was found to be one half or that for free cells. It was shown that the productivities of the continuous process with wet K-carrageenan beads and dry beads at a dilution rate 0.1h-1 were 3.4g/L-h and 2.88h/L-h, respectively.
The periodic square wave (PSW) model was successfully applied to the optimal design of a batch-storage network. The network structure can cover any type of batch production, distribution and inventory system, including recycle streams. Here we extend the coverage of the PSW model to multitasking semi-continuous processes as well as pure continuous and batch processes. In previous solutions obtained using the PSW model, the feedstock composition and product yield were treated as known constants. This constraint is relaxed in the present work, which treats the feedstock composition and product yield as free variables to be optimized. This modification makes it possible to deal with the pooling problem commonly encountered in oil refinery processes. Despite the greater complexity that arises when the feedstock composition and product yield are free variables, the PSW model still gives analytic lot sizing equations. The ability of the proposed method to determine the optimal plant design is demonstrated through the example of a high density polyethylene (HDPE) plant. Based on the analytical optimality results, we propose a practical process optimality measure that can be used for any kind of process. This measure facilitates direct comparison of the performance of multiple processes, and hence is a useful tool for diagnosing the status of process systems. The result that the cost of a process is proportional to the square root of average flow rate is similar to the well-known six-tenths factor rule in plant design.

A photoetching process is widely used for small and high precision parts in machinery, electronic and semi-conductor industries. One of the high precision parts, grid is very important part of digitron which use electron display, and it is fabricated by only photoetching process because of high precision. In this study, to develop high precision digitron grid, characteristics of etching solution were investigated with electrochemical test, that was potentiodynamic test and immersion test in the ferric chloride solution and added some additives. Based on the electrochemical etching test, grid was fabricated by continuous photoetching process at various etching condition. From the result of measured line width and etching depth under-cut and etching factor were calculated. For the fabrication of 25$\mu\textrm{m}$ line width, optimal etching condition was etching temperature 40~$45^{\circ}C$, spray pressure 1.5kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and etching time 3~4min.

In this thesis, we develop a spectral analysis scheme to eliminate the spurious peaks generated in HRR Millimeterwave Seeker based on FMICW system. In contrast to FMCW system, FMICW system generates spurious peaks in the spectrum of its IF signal, caused by the periodic discontinuity of the signal. These peaks make the accuracy of the system depend on the previously estimated range if a band pass filter is utilized to eliminate them and noise floor go to high level if random interrupted sequence is utilized and in case of using staggering process, we must transmit several waveforms to obtain overlapped information. Using the spectral analysis one of the schemes such as IAA(Iterative Adaptive Approach) and SPICE(SemiParametric Iterative Covariance-based Estimation method) which were introduced recently, the spurious peaks can be eliminated effectively. In order to utilize IAA and SPICE, since we must distinguish between reliable data and unreliable data and only use reliable data, STFT(Short Time Fourier Transform) is applied to the distinguishment process.
