  • Objectives: People often fail to reduce or maintain their weight despite trying to lose weight. The purpose of this study was to review previously published study results of the predictive factors associated with weight loss in obesity treatment. Methods: Authors searched for the articles related to weight loss, published from 2007 to 2017 found on PubMed, Scopus, Research Information Sharing Service (RISS), and Koreanstudies Information Service System (KISS). A total of 43 articles were finally selected. From the study results, unchangeable and changeable predictors were extracted, and these predictors were examined according to detailed categories. Results: Predictors of weight loss in obesity treatment included genetic and physiological factors, demographic factors, history of treatment on obesity related factors, behavioral factors, psychological factors and treatment process related factors. The main factors of weight loss were unchangeable predictors such as high initial degree of obesity and younger age, and changeable predictors such as dietary restraint, regular exercise, self-efficacy, initial weight loss and attendance. Especially dietary restraint, regular exercise, successful initial weight loss and high attendance were considered to be dominant factors for weight loss treatments. Conclusions: Our review results suggest that unchangeable and changeable predictors of weight loss should be carefully examined during treatments of obesity.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the correlation between self-efficacy and self-care of hemodialysis patients. The subjects consisted of 140 hemodialysis patients who underwent hemodialysis at 2 university hospitals. The data were collected by questionnaires and chart review. The questinnaire used the self-efficacy tool developed by Kim Ju Hyune(1995) and the self-care tool developed by literature review and indepth open openended questions to 10 patients. Also, the questionnaire included physiologic data which collected through review of the patients' charts. The statistical analysis was used the SPSS program for frequency, mean, t-test, ANOVA and Pearson correlation. The results were as follows : 1. The mean score for general self-efficacy of hemodialysis patients was 3.103(1-4point) and there were significant differences according to percieved health. The mean score for specific self-efficacy of hemodialysis patients was 3.113 (1-4point) and there were significant differencies according to percieved health, side effects and complications which related hemodialysis. 2. The mean score for self-care of hemodialysis patients was 3.822(1-5point) and there were significant differencies according to marital status and economic level. 3. The relationship between general self-efficacy and self-care was a positive correlation(P=.000). The relationship between specific self-efficacy and self-care was a positive correlation(P=.000). In conclusion, this study revealed the level of self-efficacy and self-care, and the positive correlation between self-efficacy and self-care in hemodialysis patients. Therefore, intervention is needed to promote self-efficacy for self-care of hemodialysis patients. Considering the vulnerable self-care area same as checking blood pressure and weight, fluid restriction, social adjustment, exercise and rest, luther studies should develop self-efficacy promoting programs for self-care of hemodialysis patients.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the ity, food habits and eating behavior of the college students. The responses of 1,112 students(male 468, female 644) to the questionnaire were analyzed. The results were summarized as follows: The means of height, weight were $174.1{\pm}5.1cm$, $66.0{\pm}8.1kg$ for males, respectively and were $164.3{\pm}6.0cm$, $50.7{\pm}5.3kg$ for female, respectively. The means of relative body weight(RBW) were $99.1{\pm}11.6$ for males and $91.2{\pm}10.3$ for females. Body mass index(BMI) were $21.8{\pm}2.5$ for males and $19.3{\pm}2.0$ for females. The rate of underweight, normal and obese on the basis of BMI was 19.9%, 71.5%, 8.6% for males, respectively and 68.4%, 30.4%, 1.3% for females respectively. Among underweight subjects, 59.3% answered that they had normal weight. 37.5% of normal weight subjects regarded themselves more obese or less obese than their actual body shape. Food habit score(out of a possible 50 points) was 29.4 in male and 29.3 in female, the score of self boarding students was the lowest among groups. Self boarding students had lower scores than the home-living students on the regularity of meals, eating time, protein intake, vegetable intake, lipid intake and food balance. The average meal frequency of the students was 2.46 times a day. Breakfast was skipped most frequently. Self-boarding students missed breakfast more often than other groups. The main reason of skipping breakfast was due to lack of time. The type of favorite snack was cookies and ramyun and in terms of snack time, most of the students had snack between lunch and dinner or after dinner. The rates of smoking and alcohol drinking were 29.8%, 76.7%, respectively and 25% of subjects exercised regularly. The results of this study suggest that a comprehensive nutrition education program is needed for college student to improve their eating habits about skipping meal and to maintain their health.

  • Dieting behaviors prevail among most women and are highly increasing among female adolescents who don't have to lose weight. The dieting behaviors of normal or low weight groups are highly related to the negative impact of health risk behaviors. We need a strategy for intervening in the dieting behaviors of relevant groups. With this background, a study was conducted to examine the current situation of dieting behaviors and related factors in middle school girls, and to provide guidelines for the relevant dieting group. This survey was carried out by self-questionnaires passed out to 901 middle school girls from 3 middle schools in Seoul. Data were collected from April 10th, 2000 to April 17th, 2000 and 794 respondents' data were finally selected for analysis. The instruments of this study were Shin's scale for effects of mass-media, Birleson's depression self-rating scale translated by shim, Rosenberg's self-esteem scale, Smilkstein's Family APGAR score translated by Yoon, Kim's school-related adjustment scale. The credibility of instruments was 0.41~0.83 in the pilot study and 0.70~0.86 in the main study. The summary of results was as follows: 1. The general characteristics of respondents were analyzed. In comparison of grade and dieting behaviors, the subjects of the group perceived that their body image was obeser than their real body image and their ideal body image was slenderer than their current body image. A dieter's body image was seriously distorted. 2. The dieting behaviors were analyzed. The Subjects' BMI was within the normal to low range -- they didn't have to lose weight. But actually 47.3% of the respondents were dieters. Their main dieting methods were exercise(71.8%), computer games(64.9%) such as DDR and pump, and intake reduction(64.1%). Most dieters were using desirable methods such as exercise and intake control. But unhealthy methods such as saunax, smoking and harmful drug-use were also used by a few dieters. The main reason for dieting was attractiveness. The chief resources of dieting methods were mass-media(67.8%), friends(64.3%), and parents & relatives(35.1%). Only a few subjects obtained the information from health professionals. While they were trying to lose weight, 42.1% of the subjects experienced side effects such as dizziness(45.0%), apathy(20.5%), appetite loss(18.5%), amenorrhea and the irregularity of the menstrual cycle(16.6%). 3. The relationship between dieting behaviors and factors was analyzed. Dieting behaviors were significantly related to the experience of menarche, the experience of dating with heterosexuals, perceived body image, self-esteem, depression, family's relationship, school instruction-related adjustment, school life-related adjustment, and the effect of mass-media. After that, the multiple logistic regression was used. The analysis revealed that dating, perceived body image, the experience of menarche and the effect of mass media were significant factors. In conclusion, strategies for preventing irrelevant dieting behaviors are urgently required to enhance female adolescents' ability to choose the right information from countless others and to recognize their optimum body image.

  • It is necessary to understand the behavior of the soils for the dredging constructions. The objective of this study is to estimate void ratio and density changes of the dredged soils by using the geophysical testing methods. A series of laboratory tests is performed to obtain geotechnical index properties of the specimen, retrieved from the west coastal of Korea. The sedimentation and self-weight consolidation tests are carried out with observing changes of the interfacial height and the elastic wave velocities. The same amounts of the soils are poured into the testing column at intervals of 12 hours until the interheight reaches to a certain level. After the completion of the sedimentatation and self-weight consolidation tests, downward permeability test is performed to assess a tidal influence in the nearshore. The mini resistance cone is penetrated into the specimen to measure the electrical resistivity with depth. All tests are completely finished, the weight of specimens are measured to calculate the void ratio with the depth. Experimental results show that the aspects of the self-weight consolidation are invisible during dredging process because of rapid sedimentation characteristics of ML. However, the elastic wave velocities increase with increasing in the effective stresses. During permeability test, measured permeability and the elastic wave velocities maintain almost identical values. Void ratio based on the elastic wave velocities changes linearly with time during the step dumpings. Void ratio estimated by the electrical resistivity represents the repeatedly layered depositions according to the step-by-step dumpings. Void ratio determined by soil sampling is similar to those of elastic waves and electrical resistivity profiles. This experimental study demonstrates that the geophysical testing methods may be an effective method for evaluating the behavior of dredged soils.

  • Purpose: To explain the concept of postpartum weight retention and to analyze factor effect on it. Method: A total of 20 studies related postpartum weight retention were selected in the year of 1988-2001 and analysis was done. Result: A demographic factor like parity, age, social and economic level and life style such as exercise, diet, breast feeding are influential factor on postpartum retention weight. But parts of them don't agree the same results. Meanwhile, in some studies, psychological factor like women's self esteem related to postpartum retention weight, body image change, depressing is found to be very related. As a result, postpartum overweight gain could be a bad factor of physical and mental health. In Korea, we have few studies related to them. Conclusion: It is required to do many-sided and deep studies about aspects of postpartum retention weight and the factor that effect on it. Postpartum retention weight should be approached by controling weight from the period of pregnancy. And it would rather be researched through individual approach considered women's various demographic, social-cultural and physical level than be required standardized level of weight gain.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the difference in dietary attitudes, dietary behaviors and health-related lifestyles among Korean college students (392 males, 808 females) participating in a web class of nutrition education. This cross-sectional survey was conducted by a self-administered questionnaire and data was analyzed by SPSS program. Most female subjects with weight-control attempt had eating habit problems such as overeating and food jags. The female subjects with weight-control attempt showed significantly higher rate of skipping dinner compared to those without weight-control attempt. As for frequency of exercise, the subjects with weight-control attempt exercised more frequently compared to those without weight-control attempt. In subjects, weight-control attempt was significantly associated with exercise. Nutrient adequacy ratio and mean adequacy ratio of the subjects with weight-control attempt were significantly lower compared to those without weight-control attempt. These results suggest that skipping dinner or exercise might be used as weight-control methods in Korean college female students participating in a nutrition education class via the internet.

  • Purpose: The objective of this study was to evaluate adherence to self-care and identify associated factors in outpatients with Heart Failure (HF). Methods: Using a cross-sectional design, a convenience sample of 249 outpatient clinic patients were recruited at S university hospital. Between October 2009 and December 2009, data were collected through questionnaires and medical record review. Results: The total mean score of adherence to self-care was $18.07{\pm}3.56$ out of a possible 45 points. Among self-care dimensions, adherence to medication and low salt diet was high, while lower adherence was reported in contact with health professionals if symptoms such as weight gain, edema and fatigue were presented. Multivariate analysis adjusted for other socio-demographic and clinical factors showed that disease knowledge related to heart failure (p<.001) and left ventricular ejection fraction (p=.027) were independent predictors of adherence to self-care. These factors explained 23% of total variance in the adherence to self-care. Conclusion: Heart failure patients with higher disease knowledge and those who have good systolic function may be more likely to engage in adherence to self-care than those with lack of disease knowledge and low contractility. Further research is needed to confirm these results and identify other predictors of adherence to self-care.
