  • Both message appeals and individual characteristics can influence the effectiveness of sustainable product promotions. Applying the agency-communion orientation to the advertising message research context, this study examined the interplay between message appeals and agency-communication orientations in impacting purchase intentions. The findings from a 2 (message appeal: self-interest vs. public-interest message) × 2 (motivational orientation: agency vs. communion) experiment revealed a communion-over-agency effect on consumer purchasing decisions for public-interest message appeals. In the self-interest message condition, we found no statistically significant difference in impact between agency and communion on purchase intentions. In short, we contribute to advertising effectiveness research by showing that agency-communion orientations moderate the effect of message appeals. We also explain the practical implications of these findings for effective sustainable communication in advertisements based on individuals' motivational orientations.

Also the paths for the clothing attitude affected by these variables were analyzed. The data for this research were collected from questionnaires of 210 male and 180 female college students. Body image is categorized as three factors, 'interest in appearance', 'concern about weight', and 'satisfaction in appearance'. And clothing attitude is categorized as five factors, 'fashionability', 'status symbolism', 'modesty', 'conformity', and 'manageability'. Male students were more satisfied with their body satisfaction than female students. Female students showed higher interest in appearance and concern about weight than male students. Thin somatotype showed high self-esteem interest in appearance, and fashionability. Fashionability was indirectly affected by gender, somatotype, self-esteem and body satisfaction, and was directly affected in the cases of high interest and satisfaction in appearance. Status symbolism was significantly affected in the cases of female students and high interest in appearance. Modesty was significantly affected in the cases of female students and low satisfaction in appearance. Conformity was significantly affected in the cases of high interest in appearance. Manageability was indirectly affected by gender, somatotype and self-esteem, and was directly affected in the cases of low interest in appearance.

  • This study compares the perceived body image of female college students in Korea and Japan as well as explains the difference in the level of self-esteem, body cathexis, body image and fashion leadership based on nationality and body. The sense of fashion leadership affected by these factors was also analyzed. A high ratio of Korean and Japanese female students perceived themselves as obese compared to actual body physique. It was shown that body was highly distorted. They showed a comparatively low level of satisfaction with appearance in contrast to their high interest in their appearance and weight. Thin bodied individuals showed a high level of self-esteem and body cathexis; however, persons with an obese body showed a low level of body cathexis. They showed high interest in appearance regardless of body physique; however, they remain unsatisfied with their appearance. Individuals with an obese body and a standard somatotype showed a high concern with weight. A high fashion opinion leadership was reciprocal to a high interest in appearance and satisfaction with appearance. Korean female students showed an indirect positive effect on fashion opinion leadership through body cathexis, self-esteem, interest in appearance, and satisfaction with appearance. A thin body showed a positive effect on fashion opinion leadership and an obese body had a negative effect. Fashion innovativeness was directly influenced persons with a high degree of self-esteem and interest in appearance. Third, the difference in the self expression desires according to clothing color preference showed that the group preferring cool colors and the group preferring warm colors possessed the same highest self expression desires. And, it was revealed that the clothing color preference was a significant variable influencing fashion interest. Fourth, the effect of self expression desire on the fashion interest degree showed that recognition was the most significant factor and image management was the next.
