  • The enhancement of the cold-start capability of polymer electrolyte fuel cells is of great importance in terms of the durability and reliability of fuel-cell vehicles. In this study, vanadium oxide films deposited onto the flat surface of metallic bipolar plates were synthesized to investigate the feasibility of their use as an efficient self-heating source to expedite the temperature rise during startup at subzero temperatures. Samples were prepared through the dip-coating technique using the hydrolytic sol-gel route, and the chemical compositions and microstructures of the films were characterized by X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and field-emission scanning electron microscopy. In addition, the electrical resistance hysteresis loop of the films was measured over a temperature range from -20 to $80^{\circ}C$ using a four-terminal technique. Experimentally, it was found that the thermal energy (Joule heating) resulting from self-heating of the films was sufficient to provide the substantial amount of energy required for thawing at subzero temperatures.

  • This work deals with a controlled auto-ignition (CAI) single cylinder gasoline engine, focusing on the extension of operating conditions. The fuel is injected indirectly into electrically heated inlet air flow. In order to keep a homogeneous air-fuel mixing, the fuel injector is water-cooled by a specially designed coolant passage. Investigated are the engine performance and emission characteristics under the wide range of operating conditions such as 32 to 63 in the air-fuel ratio, 1000 to 1800 rpm in the engine speed, and 150 to 18$0^{\circ}C$ in the inlet air temperature. The compression ignition gasoline engine can be achieved that the ultra lean-burn with self-ignition of gasoline fuel by heating inlet air. For example. the allowable lean limit of air-fuel ratio is extended until 63 at engine speed of 1000 rpm and inlet air temperature of 17$0^{\circ}C$. It can be achieved that the emission concentrations of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxide had been significantly reduced by CAI combustion compared with conventional spark ignition engine.

  • The Ti-aluminide intermetallic compound was formed from high purity elemental Ti and Al foils by self-propagating, high-temperature synthesis(SHS) in hot press. formation of $TiAl_3$ at the interface between Ti and Al foils was controlled by temperature, pressure, heating rate, and so on. According to the thermal analysis, it is known in this study that the heating rate is the most important factor to form the intermetallic compound by this SHS reaction. The V layer addition between Al and Ti foils increased SHS reaction temperatures. The fully dense, well-boned inter-metallic composite($TiA1/Ti_3$Al) sheets of 700 m thickness were formed by heat treatment at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 10 hours after the SHS reaction of alternatively layered 10 Ti and 9 Al foils with the V coating layer. The phases and microstructures of intermetallic composite sheets were confirmed by EPMA and XRD.

Metal-organic frameworks-driven ZnO-functionalized carbon nanotube fiber for NO2 sensor

  • In this study, heterogeneous ZnO/CNTF composites were developed to improve the NO2-sensing response, facilitated by the self-heating property. Highly conductive and mechanically stable CNTFs were prepared by a wet-spinning process assisted by the liquid crystal (LC) behavior of CNTs. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) of ZIF-8 were precipitated on the surface of the CNTF (ZIF-8/CNTF) via one-pot synthesis in solution. The subsequent calcination process resulted in the formation of the ZnO/CNTF composites. The calcination temperatures were controlled at 400, 500, and 600 ℃ in an N2 atmosphere to confirm the evolution of the microstructures and NO2-sensing properties. Gas sensor characterization was performed at 100 ℃ by applying a DC voltage to induce Joule heating through the CNTF. The results revealed that the ZnO/CNTF composite after calcination at 500 ℃ (ZnO/CNTF-500) exhibited an improved response (Rair/Rgas = 1.086) toward 20 ppm NO2 as compared to the pristine CNTF (Rair/Rgas = 1.063). Selective NO2-sensing properties were demonstrated with negligible responses toward interfering gas species such as H2S, NH3, CO, and toluene. Our approach for the synthesis of MOF-driven ZnO/CNTF composites can provide a new strategy for the fabrication of wearable gas sensors integrated with textile materials.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop self-heating concrete by utilizing the conduction resistance of concrete in order to reduce the risk of occurrence of black ice in the concrete pavement in winter and to prevent damage caused by freez-thawing effect. For this purpose, it was attempted to evaluate the strength and temperature exothermic characteristics using powder and liquid waste CNTs and a waste cathode agent as a conduction promotion. It was analyzed that liquid waste CNT had an effective dispersion degree in the mortar and a small decrease in strength occurred. In addition, DC 24 V was supplied by applying steel mesh, copper foil and copper wire to the mortar as electrodes, and the temperature change characteristics according to the mixing ratio of spent CNTs, anodes and carbon fibers were evaluated. In addition, by evaluating the temperature characteristics according to the electrode spacing from the selected optimal mixture, it was confirmed that it had sufficient heating characteristics up to an electrode spacing of 100 mm up to AC 50 V.

  • The demands for Home Meal Replacement (HMR) products are continuously increasing owing to the convenience of instant food and online food delivery. Ready-to-heat (RTH) products have received massive attention in the HMR industry because these products can be easily warmed using a microwave oven. However, the conventional microwave packaging should be opened before microwave heating to prevent bursting or food loss owing to the steam-pressure build-up inside the package. Open packaging might lead to non-uniform food heating and cross-contamination. Therefore, packaging materials that are able to release steam without opening are of interest to the HMR industry. In this study, polylactic acid(PLA)/polyethylene glycol(PEG)/nanoclay composite films were manufactured using an extrusion method as packaging materials with a smart steam-releasing function. The introduction of PEG to the PLA imparted a steam self-releasing feature to the composite films owing to the morphology change of composite films during microwave heating. Further, PEG increased the ductility of PLA, which in turn prevented bursting caused due to the steam-pressure build-up. The uniform dispersion of nanoclay obtained by a twin-screw extrusion led to stronger mechanical properties. Therefore, the smart composite films developed here can be applied as microwave packaging materials with a self-releasing function.

Effect of Heating Rate on Self-Propagating, High-Temperature Synthesis of $TiAl_3$ Intermetallic from Multi-Layered Elemental Foils (다층원소박판에서 $TiAl_3$의 고온자전합성에 미치는 승온속도의 영향)

  • Titanium aluminide intermetallic compound was formed from high purity elemental Ti and A1 foils by selfpropagating, high-temperature synthesis(SHS1 in hot press. Formation of $TiAl_3$ intermetallics at the interface between Ti and Al foil was observed to be controlled by temperature, pressure and heating rate. Especially, the heating rate is the most important role to form intermetallic compound by SHS reaction. According to DTA experiment, the SHS reactions appeared at two different temperatures below and above the melting point of Al. It was also observed that both SHS reaction temperatures increased with increasing the heating rate. After the SHS reaction of alternatively layered 10 Ti and 9 A1 foils at the heating rate of $20^{\circ}C$/min, the $700\mu\textrm{m}$ thick titanium aluminide sheet was formed by heat treatment at $810^{\circ}C$ for 4hours.

  • This study is to examine adhesion the characteristics of self adhesive asphalt to minimize of the construction periods and the environmental problems through the performance estimation of materials to reduce waterproof problem and the long durability maintenance of building structures. This study tested the estimation items of self rubberized adhesive asphalt to examine the sheet discovered the most important problem in the construction site and the connection stability in the sheet joint. Besides, this study examined the material characteristics such as tension property, tear property, temperature dependence, heat resistance, adhesion stability and so on. Test results of the separative items satisfied in the reference figure of connection stability and adhesion stability which could confirm adhesion performances and other items also satisfied in the reference.

  • The finite element method has been used to model and analyze the heat transfer phenomena during manufacturing process of $MoSi_2$ by SHS(Self-propagating High-temperature Synthesis). For this purpose nonlinear transient heat transfer analyses by using ANSYS have been performed to estimate the temperature distributions and the peak temperature in the test specimen. The effects of manufacturing process parameters such as pre-heating temperatures, the velocity of reaction zone have been investigated. The results of the analysis have been compared with the experimental results.
