Data was collected from 355 subjects who have the certificates of PMHNP working in hospitals and public centers. Chun Seok Kyun's instruments (1993) based on the Heppner and Petersen's Problem Solving Inventory (1982) was used to determine PMHNPs' PSI. The results were as follows; 1. The average score of PSI of PMHNP was $2.81\pm0.23$. Of the three factors. there marked the lowest score in the factor 3. personal control $(2.56\pm0.43)$, and the highest score was in the factor 1. problem-solving confidence $(2.95\pm0.34)$. 2. The differences in PSI were significant for degree of education and career in psychiatric settings (p=0.000l, p=0.0187). 3. Job satisfaction was the highest factor predicting PSI of PMHNP$(17.9\%)$. When degree of education, career in psychiatric setting and marital status were added, the total predictors explained $24.3\%$. As a result, it is necessary to conduct further research in relation to the problem-solving process, the development of education program. skill acquisition and measurement of problem solving in nursing practice.

  • Purpose: This study aimed at (a) developing an instructional model of creative thinking education on the problem-based learning method (C-PBL) in undergraduate nursing curriculum at one University, and (b) examining its effect on nursing students' level of creativity and outcomes from problem-based learning. Methods: The C-PBL model was implemented on 43 juniors of the experimental group with a 30 hour-nursing class during one semester. The control group, with 54 seniors, received 4 hours of problem based learning training in an adult nursing class. Pre-and post-tests were done with the Torrance Tests of Creative Thinking for creative thinking ability, the Integrated Creativity Instrument for creative motivation and attitudes, the Problem Solving Competency questionnaire, and the Self-Directed Learning Instrument. Results: The C-PBL model was developed using a caring situation scenario to solve nursing problems with 3 training steps of 'encountering a patient in a caring situation', 'exploring nursing knowledge', and 'designing creative caring beyond given knowledge'. Between the experimental group and the control group, there were significant differences in creativity (p<.010), problem-solving ability (p<.010), and self-directed ability (p<.010). Conclusion: This C-PBL method could contribute in increasing creative competency as well as problem-solving ability for nursing students.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between parental attitudes, teachers' autonomy support as perceived by high school students, and the self-directed learning abilities of high school students. A total of 341 high school students from South Korea participated in the study. A survey instrument was used to measure parental attitudes, teacher autonomy support, and students' self-directed learning ability. The results of the study are as follows. First, the rearing attitudes of parents were perceived by the participants as oriented more toward being attainable and relatively less self-directed. There were no significant differences between male and female students, though male students were more likely to perceive their parents' attitudes as more attainable-oriented. The results also show that, in terms of self-directed learning skills among high school students, the more goal-oriented, compassionate, and autonomous the parental attitudes are, the likelier are students to have developed self-directed learning skills. Second, the male students were more aware of the autonomy support of teachers than were the female students. This shows that the results have significant predictive power over the self-directed learning ability among high school students. Accordingly, the perception of autonomy support by teachers affects the development of self-directed learning among students. We can therefore conclude that self-directed learning skills develop most effectively in students who are supported by their teachers.
