In this study, seismic control performance of friction dampers installed in a reinforced concrete shear wall-moment frame system, of which main lateral force resisting system is a shear wall, is investigated. Three configurations of friction dampers are investigated. One is a diagonal brace type reinforcing the shear wall directly, another is a diagonal brace type reinforcing the moment frame without the shear wall, and the other one is a vertical boundary element type installed at both ends of the shear wall. In addition, various levels of the total friction force and its distribution methods are examined. Time history analysis considering material nonlinearity is conducted for seismic loads increased by the enhanced design code compared to the initial design loads, and energy dissipation, lateral loads and structural member damages are analyzed. As a result, the shear wall-reinforcing diagonal brace type with the total friction force of 30 % of the reference friction force gives the best performance on the whole, and the distribution methods of the friction force do not have remarkable difference in effects. Also, concentrated installation in adjacent four stories shows just a little compromised control performance compared to the entire story installation.

The FEMA P695 document proposed a methodology to evaluate the collapse safety of a structure and the validity of the seismic design coefficients. In this study, the seismic performance of six- and twelve-story staggered wall structures with a middle corridor was evaluated based on the FEMA P695 procedure. The analysis results of the prototype structures were compared with those of the structures with an increased coupling beam depth or an increased re-bar ratio of the coupling beams in order to investigate the effect of retrofit. The adjusted collapse margin ratios (ACMR) of the model structures obtained from incremental dynamic analyses turned out to be larger than the specified limit states of an ACMR of 20%, which implies that the analysis model structures have enough strength against design level earthquakes. It was also observed that the increase in the re-bar ratio of the coupling beams between the staggered walls was more effective in increasing the ACMR than an increase in the depth of the coupling beams.

In order to evaluate the seismic performance of damaged reinforced concrete members, particularly bridge piers, an inelastic time-dependent element is proposed. The proposed element enables increased characteristics due to structural intervention(i.e., repair or retrofitting) to be accurately reflected to the degraded strength and stiffness of the members. The inelastic time-dependent element having both birth and death time can freely be activated within the user-defined time intervals during static and dynamic time-history analysis. Comparative studies are carried out for reinforced concrete bridge piers that are repaired and retrofitted. Analytical predictions using the developed element show reasonable correlation with experimental results. Also conducted is a nonlinear time-history analysis of a reinforced concrete bridge under multiple earthquakes. The comparative analytical results prove the validation of current development. In all, it is concluded that the present element is capable of providing salient features for the healthy evaluation of seismic performance and hence seismic stability assessment of RC bridge piers being repaired and retrofitted.

This study presents seismic responses of 5-story reinforced concrete structures retrofitted with the buckling-restrained braces using a time-dependent element. The time-dependent element having birth and death times can freely be activated within the user defined time intervals during the time history analysis. The buckling-restrained brace that showed the largest energy dissipation capacity among the test specimens in previous research was used for retrofitting the RC buildings in this study. It was assumed that the first story of the damaged building under the first earthquake was retrofitted with the buckling-restrained braces considered as the time-dependent element before the second of the successive earthquakes occurs. Under this assumption, this paper compares seismic responses of the RC structures with the time-dependent element subjected to the successive earthquake. Subjected to the second earthquake, it was observed that activation of the BRB systems largely decreases deformation of the moment frame where the damage was concentrated under the first earthquake. However, damages to the shear wall systems were increased after activation of the BRB systems. Since the cumulative damages of the shear wall systems were infinitesimal compared with the retrofit effect of the moment frame, the BRB system was effective under the successive earthquake.

The seismic reinforcement ratio of SOC facilities, such as domestic roads and railroads, is 96%. Out of approximately 7 million buildings as of 2016, only 0.51 million buildings with seismic performance were secured. Although the proportion of masonry structures is 38.8% of the total buildings, there is almost no seismic resistance, only 2.0%. To solve the problem in Korea, government-level seismic measures are being promoted, but the situation is insufficient. Overseas, the UBC research team in Vancouver, Canada, has developed and used EDCC to reinforce the seismic performance of masonry buildings. EDCC is a construction material that can secure concrete ductility capability by mixing fibers and secure deformation resistance of concrete through bridging action. It is necessary to examine various materials because EDCC is not used as a spray type of secure seismic reinforcement. In this study, as part of the research and development of spraying materials to improve the durability of masonry buildings, this study examined the spraying characteristics of fiber-reinforced mortar according to fiber use and the viscosity change according to the use of thickener. As a result, the working performance of the fiber-reinforced mortar for seismic reinforcement was improved when using 1% fiber and 1% thickener.
In Seoul, more than 80 percent of residential buildings are constructed with unreinforced masonry(URM) buildings in early 1970 to 1990. In general, URM buildings have the advantages of reducing the construction time and easy to construction. However, URM buildings do not have enough strength against the lateral force. Moreover, low rise buildings have not adopted seismic designs, and for that reason a critical damage is expected with an earthquake. And also, the necessity of the seismic performance evaluation of existing building structures is raised through the Taiwan earthquake in 1999. The purpose of this study is to provide basic information for unreinforced masonry building in Korea by application of the proposed seismic evaluation method. In this study, seismic capacities of 50 existing unreinforced masonry buildings are evaluated based on the proposed method. Also, relationships of seismic capacities between Korean earthquake damage ratios of korean unreinforced masonry buildings are estimated. Results of this study were as follows; 1)Seismic retrofit was needed $8{\sim}48%$ in Korean unreinforced masonry buildings. 2)Korean unreinforced masonry buildings were expected to have severe damage under the earthquake intensity level experienced in Japan.

A large number of structure in the world were build with poor seismic details, with or without any lateral load resisting system like concentrically braced frames and steel plate shear walls. These structures can reveal deteriorating hysteretic behaviors with stiffness and strength degradation. Therefore, seismic retrofitting of such structures for drift control has vital importance. In this study a retrofit methodology has been developed, which involves diagonal bracing of steel frames with different cable arrangements. In the experimental and numerical program 5 different lateral load resisting system were tested and results compared with each other. The results indicated that multi-cable arrangements suggested in this study showed stable ductile behavior without any sudden decrease in strength. Due to the usage of more than one diagonal cable, fracture of any cable did not significantly affect the overall strength and deformation capacity of the system. In cable braced systems damages concentrated in the boundary zones of the cables and beams. That is why boundary zone must have enough stiffness and strength to resist tension field action of cables.
This paper provides an overview on development of long-span bridges monitoring in Japan, with emphasis on monitoring strategies, types of monitoring system, and effective utilization of monitoring data. Because of severe environment condition such as high seismic activity and strong wind, bridge monitoring systems in Japan historically put more emphasis on structural evaluation against extreme events. Monitoring data were used to verify design assumptions, update specifications, and facilitate the efficacy of vibration control system. These were among the first objectives of instrumentation of long-span bridges in a framework of monitoring system in Japan. Later, monitoring systems were also utilized to evaluate structural performance under various environment and loading conditions, and to detect the possible structural deterioration over the age of structures. Monitoring systems are also employed as the basis of investigation and decision making for structural repair and/or retrofit when required. More recent interest has been to further extend application of monitoring to facilitate operation and maintenance, through rationalization of risk and asset management by utilizing monitoring data. The paper describes strategies and several examples of monitoring system and lessons learned from structural monitoring of long-span bridges in Japan.

A procedure for figuring out proper amount of additional viscous damping required to keep the inelastic deformation of a plan-wise asymmetric structure within a given target performance point was developed. To this end the behavior of an asymmetric nonlinear structure after yielding is investigated. Then a formula for the required amount of equivalent damping was derived based on the ductility demand of the structure. The procedure was applied to a five-story asymmetric structure subjected to an earthquake load. According to the comparison with the results from the dynamic time-history analysis, the structure with viscous dampers installed in accordance with the proposed procedure showed satisfactory seismic performance in both the stiff and the flexible edges.

The purpose of this study was to propose a design procedure for a damped structure with a friction damper for an existing structure. The target displacement of the damped structure was determined using the maximum displacement of the existing structure. The displacement of the damped structures was predicted using a proposed equation for the inelastic displacement ratio. For this study, we conducted a nonlinear response history analysis using 80 earthquake ground motions to verify the validity of the proposed design procedure by comparing the responses of the damped and undamped structures. Based on the dynamic analysis results, it was concluded that the predicted displacement of the damped structure using the proposed design procedure matched well with the analysis results.
