The broadband receiver functions are developed from teleseismic P waveforms recorded at Wonju(KSRS), Inchon(IRIS), and Pohang(PHN), and are analyzed to examine the crustal structure beneath these stations. The teleseismic receiver functions are inverted in the time domain of the vertical P wave velocity structures beneath the stations. Clear P-to-S converted phases from the Moho interface are observed in teleseismic seismograms recorded at these stations. The crustal velocity structures beneath the stations are estimated by using the receiver function inversion method(Ammon et al., 1990). The general features of inversion results are as follows: (1) For the Inchon station, the Conrad discontinuity exists at 17.5 Km(SW) deep and the Moho discontinuity exists at 29.5 Km(NW) and 30.5 Km(SE, SW) deep. (2) The shallow crustal structure beneath Wonju station may be covered with a sedimentary rock of a 3 Km thickness. The average Moho depth is assumed about 33.0 Km, and the Conrad discontinuity may exist at 17.0 Km(NE) and 21.0 Km(NW) deep. (3) For Pohang station, the thickness of shallow sedimentary layer is a 3.0 Km in the direction of NE and NW. The Moho depth is 28.0 Km in the direction of the NE and NW. The Conrad discontinuity can be estimated to be existed at 21.0 Km deep for the NE and NW directions.
Underwater seismic refraction with advanced interpretation approaches makes important contributions to shallow marine exploration and geotechnical investigations in Australia's coastal areas. A series of case studies are presented to demonstrate the recent applications of continuous and static USR methods to river crossing and port infrastructure projects at various sites around Australia. In Sydney, static underwater seismic refraction (USR) with bottom-placed receivers and borehole seismic imaging assisted the development of improved geotechnical models that reduced construction risk for a tunnel crossing of the Lane Cove River. In Melbourne, combining conventional boomer reflection and continuous USR with near-bottom sources and receivers improved the definition of a buried, variably weathered basalt flow and assisted dredging assessment for navigation channel upgrades at Geelong Ports. Sand quality assessment with continuous USR and widely spaced borehole information assisted commercial decisions on available sand resources for the reclamation phase of development at the Port of Brisbane. Buried reefs and indurated layers occur in Australian coastal sediments with the characteristics of laterally limited, high velocity, cap layers within lower velocity materials. If these features are not recognised then significant error in depth determination to deeper refractors can occur. Application of advanced refraction inversion using wavefront eikonal tomography to continuous USR data obtained along the route of a proposed offshore pipeline near Fremantle allowed these layers and the underlying bedrock refractor to be accurately imaged. Static USR and the same interpretation approach was used to image the drowned granitic regolith beneath sediments and indurated layers in the northern area of Western Australia at a proposed new berthing site where deep piling was required. This allowed preferred piling sites to be identified, reducing overall pile lengths. USR can be expected to find increased application to shallow marine exploration and geotechnical investigations in Australia's coastal areas as economic growth continues and improved interpretation methods are developed.

Two-dimensional imaging of $V_s$ profile becomes more important in Korea because of the large horizontal variation of soil stiffness. To obtain a shear-wave velocity profile in geotechnical practice, various seismic nondestructive investigation methods are being frequently used. In this study, harmonic wavelet analysis of wave (HWAW) method is applied to the determination of $V_s$ profile to overcome some of weaknesses in the existing surface wave methods. HWAW method which is based on time-frequency analysis using harmonic wavelet transform has been developed to determine phase and group velocities of waves. Field testing of this method is relatively simple and fast because one experimental setup which consists of one pair of receivers is needed to determine $V_s$ profile of site. The proposed method uses the signal portion of the maximum local signal/noise ratio to evaluate the phase velocity to minimize the effects of noise, and uses single array inversion which considers receiver locations. Field tests were performed in 2 sites in order to evaluate accuracy of test method and estimate the applicability of 2-D imaging by HWAW method. Through field applications and comparison with other test results, the good accuracy and applicability of the proposed method were verified.
Seismic refraction survey was performed for 10 lines along NE-SW and NW-SE directions above Nampoong gallery at Makyo-ri, Dogye, Samcheok, Kangwon-do. 48 geophones were laid in line with the interval of 1m, and a 5Kg hammer was used as a source at 5 points for each line. Data processing was done using reciprocal time method, GRM, and traveltime tomography which utilizes wavefront expansion method for forward process and STRT for inversion. The result shows that the first layer has its lower boundary between 3.49m and 8.88m. The P-wave velocity of the first and the second layer were estimated as 270${\~}$360m/s and 1550${\~}$1940m/s respectively. When the boundary of the first and second layer is smooth enough and the velocity difference is large enough, GRM has little advantage over reciprocal time method. The result of reciprocal method and traveltime tomography shows consistency. The northeast part of the boundary has syncline structure, which is similar to the topography above. This implies that the collapse of the cavities of Nampoong gallery result in the subsidence of the ground surface. The subsidence is in progress across the Youngdong railroad, therefore a proper reinforcement work is required.
Due to the long tectonic history and the very complex geologic formations in Korea, the anisotropic characteristics of subsurface material may often change very greatly and locally. The algorithms commonly used, however, may not give sufficiently precise computational results of traveltime data particularly for the complex and strong anisotropic model, since they are based on the two-dimensional (2D) earth and/or weak anisotropy assumptions. This study is intended to develope a three-dimensional (3D) modeling algorithm to precisely calculate the first arrival time in the complex anisotropic media. Considering the complex geology of Korea, we assume 3D TTI (tilted transversely isotropy) medium having the arbitrary symmetry axis. The algorithm includes the 2D non-linear interpolation scheme to calculate the traveltimes inside the grid and the 3D traveltime mapping to fill the 3D model with first arrival times. The weak anisotropy assumption, moreover, can be overcome through devising a numerical approach of the steepest descent method in the calculation of minimum traveltime, instead of using approximate solution. The performance of the algorithm developed in this study is demonstrated by the comparison of the analytic and numerical solutions for the homogeneous anisotropic earth as well as through the numerical experiment for the two layer model whose anisotropic properties are greatly different each other. We expect that the developed modeling algorithm can be used in the development of processing and inversion schemes of seismic data acquired in strongly anisotropic environment, such as migration, velocity analysis, cross-well tomography and so on.
Fault rupture directivity of the Odaesan earthquake, which was inferred to be the main cause of the high PGAvalue (> 0.1 g) unusually observed at the near-source region, was analyzed by using the data from the nearby (R < 100 km) dense seismic stations. The Boatwright's method (2007) was adopted for this purpose in which the azimuth and takeoff angle of the unilateral rupture directivity function could be estimated based on the relative peak ground-motions of seismic stations resulting from the nature of the rupture directivity. In this study, the approximate values of the relative peak ground-motions was derived from the difference between the log residuals of the point-source spectral model (Boore, 2003) for the main and secondary events based on the Random Vibration Theory. In this derivation, the spectral difference for a frequency range between the source corner frequencies of main and secondary events was considered to reflect only the effect of the fault directivity. The inversion result of the model parameters for the fault directivity function showed that the fault-plane of NWW-SEE direction dipping steeply to the North with high rupture velocity near upward in SE direction is responsible for the observed high level of ground-motion at the near-source region.
For quantitative evaluation of geotechnical engineering properties such as rippability and diggability, clear interpretation on the subsUJiace velocity structures should be preceded by figuring out top soil, weathered and soft rock layers, shape of basement, fracture zones, geologic boundary and etC. from the seismic refraction data. It is very important to set up suitable field parameters, which are the configuration of profile and its length, spacings of geophones and sources and topographic conditions, for increasing field data Quality. Geophone spacing of 3 to 5m is reconunended in the land slope area of house land development site. In refraction tomography technique, the number of source points should be more than a Cluarter of available channel number of instrument and the subsurface structure interpretation can be decreased the artifact of inversion by topographic effect. Compared with core logging data, it is shown that the velocity range of the soil is less than 700m/s, weathered rock 700~1,200m/s, soft rock 1,200~1,800m/s on the velocity tomogram section. And the upper limit of P-wave velocity for rippability is estimated 1,200 to 1,800m/s in land slope area of gneiss.

Three dimensional finite difference elastic wave model was developed to estimate the feasibility of surface wave applications in geotechnical problems. The wave motions calculated by the developed program in this study shows good agreement with well known analytic solutions. The surface wave motions calculated from layered dam type structure can be interpreted as a infinite layer structure using dispersion curve but it is need a special source of which high energy in frequency band lower than 10 Hz to get information of physical properties in few tens meter deep. The source which has high energy in the low frequency band, however, can give defect on dam and this will make some limitation in real field applications. The dispersion curves calculated from the surface wave motion of homogeneous and center core type dam models will give rise to fatal errors if the conventional infinite layer structure used in their interpretation because the surrounding materials and boundaries of dam make some distortion in dispersion curve of surface wave. So it is strongly recommended to use three dimensional inversion model for correct interpretation and estimation of physical properties of dam materials.
The crustal structure of Korean Peninsula have been investigated by analyzing group velocity dispersion data of surface wave. Cross.correlation of seismic background motions (Campillo and Paul, 2003; Shapiro et al., 2005) has been applied to estimate the short.period Rayleigh. and Love.wave group velocity dispersion characteristics of the region. Standard processing procedures were applied to the cross.correlation, except that signal whitening was used in place of one.bit sampling equalize power in signals from different times. Multiple.filter analysis was used to extract the group velocities from the estimate Green's functions, which were then use to image the spatially varying dispersion at periods between 0.5 and 20 seconds. The tomographic inversion technique used inverted all periods simultaneously to provide a smooth dispersion curve as a function of period in addition to the usual smooth spatial image for a given period. The Gyeongsang Basin in the southeastern part of the peninsula is clearly resolved with lower group velocities.
3D seismic data processing methods such as full waveform inversion or reverse-time migration require 3D wave propagation modeling and heavy calculations. We compared efficiency and accuracy of a Xeon Phi coprocessor to those of a high-end server CPU using 3D frequency-domain wave propagation modeling. We adopted the OpenMP parallel programming to the time-domain finite difference algorithm by considering the characteristics of the Xeon Phi coprocessors. We applied the Fourier transform using a running-integration to obtain the frequency-domain wavefield. A numerical test on frequency-domain wavefield modeling was performed using the 3D SEG/EAGE salt velocity model. Consequently, we could obtain an accurate frequency-domain wavefield and attain a 1.44x speedup using the Xeon Phi coprocessor compared to the CPU.
