Numerical analysis of slop stability is presented using seismic displacement, response seismic coefficient, and earthquake response analysis methods. In seismic displacement and response seismic coefficient methods, horizontal static seismic force is considered as 0.2g while vertical static seismic force is not considered in analysis. For earthquake response analysis Hahinoha-wave is applied, It is found from result that analysis using response seismic coefficient method is much more conservative than that using seismic displacement method Also, analysis result using earthquake response analysis method is somewhat less conservative about 25% when compared with that using seismic displacement method.
This paper proposes an approximate procedure to estimate seismic displacement capacity - defined as yield displacement times the displacement ductility - of piles in marine oil terminals. It is shown that the displacement ductility of piles is relatively insensitive to most of the pile parameters within ranges typically applicable to most piles in marine oil terminals. Based on parametric studies, lower bound values of the displacement ductility of two types of piles commonly used in marine oil terminals - reinforced-concrete and hollow-steel - with either pin connection or full-moment-connection to the deck for two seismic design levels - Level 1 or Level 2 - and for two locations of the hinging in the pile - near the deck or below the ground - are proposed. The lower bound values of the displacement ductility are determined such that the material strain limits specified in the Marine Oil Terminal Engineering and Maintenance Standard (MOTEMS) are satisfied at each design level. The simplified procedure presented in this paper is intended to be used for preliminary design of piles or as a check on the results from the detailed nonlinear static pushover analysis procedure, with material strain control, specified in the MOTEMS.
The response displacement method is the most frequently used method for seismic design of underground structures. This method is pseudo-static method, and the evaluations of velocity response spectrum of seismic base and response displacement of surrounding soil are the most important steps. In this study, the evaluation of velocity response spectrum of seismic base according to the Korean seismic design guide and the simple method of calculating the response displacement were studied. It was found that velocity response spectrum of seismic base can be estimated by directly integrating the ground-surface acceleration response spectrum of soil type S$_A$, and the evaluation of the response displacement using double cosine method assuming two layers of soil profile shows the advantages in the seismic design.

Calculating the seismic displacement of retaining walls has an important role in the optimum design of these structures. Also, studying the effect of surcharge is important for the calculation of active pressure as well as permanent displacements of the wall. In this regard, some researchers have investigated active pressure; but, unfortunately, there are few investigations on the seismic displacement of retaining walls with surcharge. In this research, using limit analysis and upper bound theorem, permanent seismic displacement of retaining walls with surcharge was analyzed for sliding and overturning failure mechanisms. Thus, a new formulation was presented for calculating yield acceleration, critical angle of failure wedge, and permanent displacement of retaining walls with surcharge. Also, effects of surcharge, its location and other factors such as height of the wall and internal friction angle of soil on the amount of seismic displacements were investigated. Finally, designing charts were presented for calculating yield acceleration coefficient and angle of failure wedge.

This study aims to investigate the seismic response of a large span thin shell structures and assess their displacement under seismic loads. The study employs finite element analysis to model a thin shell structure subjected to seismic excitation. The analysis includes eigenvalue analysis and time history analysis to evaluate the natural frequencies and displacement response of the structure under seismic loads. The findings show that the seismic response of the large span thin shell structure is highly dependent on the frequency content of the seismic excitation. The eigenvalue analysis reveals that the tenth mode of vibration of the structure corresponds to a large-span mode. The time history analysis further demonstrates, with 5% damping, that the displacement response of the structure at the critical node number 4920 increases with increasing seismic intensity, reaching a maximum displacement of 49.87mm at 3.615 seconds. Nevertheless, the maximum displacement is well below the allowable limit of the thin shell. The results of this study provide insight into the behaviour of complex large span thin shell structures as elevated foundations for buildings under seismic excitation, based on the displacement contours on different modes of eigenvalues. The findings suggest that the displacement response of the structure is significant for this new application of thin shell, and it is recommended to enhance the critical displacement area in the next design phase to align with the findings of this study to resist the seismic impact.
Seismic isolation is often used in protecting mission-critical structures including hospitals, data centers, telecommunication buildings, etc. Such structures typically house vibration-sensitive equipment which has to provide continued service but may fail in case sustained accelerations during earthquakes exceed threshold limit values. Thus, peak floor acceleration is one of the two main parameters that control the design of such structures while the other one is peak base displacement since the overall safety of the structure depends on the safety of the isolation system. And in case peak base displacement exceeds the design base displacement during an earthquake, rupture and/or buckling of isolators as well as bumping against stops around the seismic gap may occur. Therefore, obtaining accurate peak floor accelerations and peak base displacement is vital. However, although nominal design values for isolation system and superstructure parameters are calculated in order to meet target peak design base displacement and peak floor accelerations, their actual values may potentially deviate from these nominal design values. In this study, the sensitivity of the seismic performance of structures equipped with linear and nonlinear seismic isolation systems to the aforementioned potential deviations is assessed in the context of a benchmark shear building under different earthquake records with near-fault and far-fault characteristics. The results put forth the degree of sensitivity of peak top floor acceleration and peak base displacement to superstructure parameters including mass, stiffness, and damping and isolation system parameters including stiffness, damping, yield strength, yield displacement, and post-yield to pre-yield stiffness ratio.
A seismic strengthening method using Velcro is proposed to improve the seismic performance of columns in RC frame structures. The proposed method was evaluated experimentally using three fabricated RC specimens. Velcro was wrapped around the columns of the RC-frame specimen to prevent concrete spall falling. The reinforcing performance of the Velcro was determined from comparison of results on seismic performance (i.e., strength, displacement, failure mode, displacement ductility capacity and amount of dissipated energy). As the displacement of the reinforced specimens was increased, the amount of dissipated energy increased drastically, and the displacement-ductility-capacity of the reinforced specimens also increased. The final failure mode of RC frame structure was changed. As a result, it was concluded that the proposed seismic strengthening method using Velcro could be used to increase the displacement ductility of RC columns, and could be used to change the final failure mode of RC-frame structures.
The effects of past earthquakes have demonstrated the seismic vulnerability of confined masonry structures (CMSs) to earthquakes. The results of experimental analysis indicate that damage to these structures depends on lateral displacement applied to the walls. Seismic evaluation lacks an analytical approach because of the complexity of the behavior of this type of structure; an empirical approach is often used for this purpose. Seismic assessment and risk analysis of CMSs, especially in area have a large number of such buildings is difficult and could be riddled with error. The present study used analytical and numerical models to develop a simplified nonlinear displacement-based approach for seismic assessment of a CMS. The methodology is based on the concept of ESDOF and displacement demand and is compared with displacement capacity at the characteristic period of vibration according to performance level. Displacement demand was identified using the nonlinear displacement spectrum for a specified limit state. This approach is based on a macro model and nonlinear incremental dynamic analysis of a 3D prototype structure taking into account uncertainty of the mechanical properties and results in a simple, precise method for seismic assessment of a CMS. To validate the approach, a case study was considered in the form of an analytical fragility curve which was then compared with the precise method.

When an unexpected excessive seismic load is applied to the base isolation of arch structure, the seismic displacement of the base isolation may be very large beyond the limit displacement of base isolation. These excessive displacement of the base isolation causes a large displacement in the upper structure and large displacement of upper structure causes structural damage. Therefore, in order to limit the seismic displacement response of the base isolation, it is necessary to install an additional device such as an anti-uplift device to the base isolation. In this study, the installation direction of the base isolation and the control performance of the base isolation installed anti-uplift device were investigated. The installation direction of the base isolation of the arch structure is determined by considering the horizontal and vertical reaction forces of the arch structure. In addition, the separation distance of the anti-uplift device is determined in consideration of the design displacement of the base isolation and the displacement of the arch structure.
