Influence of infill panels on an irregular RC building designed according to seismic codes

  • This paper deals with the seismic assessment of a real RC frame building located in Italy, designed according to the current Italian seismic code. The first part of the paper deals with the calibration of the structural model of the investigated building. The results of an in-situ dynamic identification test are employed in a sensitivity and parametric study in order to find the best fit model in terms of frequencies and modal shapes. In the second part, the safety of the structure is evaluated by means of nonlinear static analyses, taking into account the results of the previous dynamic study. In order to investigate the influence of the infills on the seismic response of the structure, the nonlinear static analyses are performed both neglecting and taking into account the infill panels. The infill panels differently change the behavior of the structure in terms of strength and stiffness at different seismic intensity levels. The assessment study also verifies the absence of brittle failures in structural elements, which could be caused by either the local interaction with infills or the failure of the strength hierarchy.

  • Seismic forces for member design of bridges may be determined by modifying elastic member forces induced by design earthquakes using appropriate response modification factors according to national design code of bridges. Modeling of soil/foundation system is one of the critical parameter in the process of elastic seismic analysis of bridge system which greatly affects on the analysis results. In this paper, a simplified modelling procedure of soil/foundation system which gives practically reasonable results is presented and its applicability has been validated through example bridge. Based on the results, it has been shown that the procedure is acceptable in modelling soil/foundation system for practical seismic analysis of bridges.

Soil-pile interaction effects in wharf structures under lateral loads

  • Wharfs are essential to shipping and support very large gravity loads on both a short-term and long-term basis which cause quite large seismic internal forces. Therefore, these structures are vulnerable to seismic activities. As they are supported on vertical and/or batter piles, soil-pile interaction effects under earthquake events have a great importance in seismic resistance which is not yet fully understood. Seismic design codes have become more stringent and suggest the use of new design methods, such as Performance Based Design principles. According to Turkish Code for Coastal and Port Structures (TCCS 2008), the interaction between soil and pile should somehow be considered in the nonlinear analysis in an accurate manner. This study aims to explore the lateral load carrying capacity of recently designed wharf structures considering soil-pile interaction effects for different soil conditions. For this purpose, nonlinear structure analysis according to TCCS (2008) has been performed comparing simplified and detailed modeling results.

반복 하중을 받는 비내진 저층 RC 구조물의 외부 기둥-보 접합부의 거동 (Behavior of Non-seismic Detailed Low-Rise R/C Exterior Beam-to-Column Joints Subjected to Cyclic Loading)

  • 국내에서는 1988년부터 내진 규준이 시행되었으며, 따라서 그 이전에 지어진 저층 철근콘크리트 건물들은 내진 규준이 적용되지 않고 단지 축하중만을 고려하여 설계되었다. 그러므로 약한 지진이 발생하여도 이러한 건물들은 심한 피해를 입을 수 있다. 본 논문에서는, 내진 규준이 시행되기 이전에 지어진 비내진 저층 철근콘크리트 모멘트 저항 골조의 지진 발생시 거동과 피해를 알아보기 위하여, 실제 존재하는 비내진 건물 중 3층 철근콘크리트 라멘조 공공청사 건물의 외부 적합부를 교차보가 있는 것과 없는 것의 2종류를 1/2의 실물크기로 제작하고, 횡방향 변위 제어로 반복하중을 가하여 실험을 수행하였다. 비내진 접합부의 가장 큰 특징은 적합부내의 횡보강근이 없다는 것이다. 실험을 통하여 균열의 형태, 강도${\cdot}$강성의 저하, 에너지 소산 그리고 기둥과 보 부재의 철근 미끄러짐을 조사하였다. 국내에서 규정하고 있는 최대지반가속도인 0.12g크기의 횡방향 하중을 가력하였을 경우에는 균열이 발생하지 않았으나, 횡방향 하중을 0.12g이상으로 증가할수록 교차보가 없는 외부접합부에서 전단균열이 발생하였다.

내진설계기준의 지반분류체계 및 설계응답스펙트럼 개선을 위한 연구 - (III) 검증 (Site Classification and Design Response Spectra for Seismic Code Provisions - (III) Verification)

  • In the companion papers (I, II), site-specific response analyses were performed at more than 300 domestic sites and a new site classification system and design response spectra (DRS) were proposed using the results of the site-specific response analyses. In this paper, the proposed site classification system and the design response spectra are compared with those in other seismic codes and verified by different methods. Firstly, the design response spectra are compared with the design response spectra in Eurocode 8, KBC 2016 and MOCT 1997 to estimate quantitative differences and general trends. Secondly, site-specific response analyses are carried out using $V_S$-profiles obtained using field seismic tests and the results are compared with the proposed DRS in order to reduce the uncertainty in using the SPT-N value in site-specific response analyses in the companion paper (I). In addition, site coefficients from real earthquake records measured in Korean peninsula are used to compare with the proposed site coefficients. Finally, dynamic centrifuge tests are also performed to simulate the representative Korean site conditions, such as shallow depth to bedrock and short-period amplification characteristics. The overall results showed that the proposed site classification system and design response spectra reasonably represented the site amplification characteristic of shallow bedrock condition in Korea.

고차진동모드의 영향을 고려한 충지진하중 (The Effect of Higher Vibration Modes on the Design Seismic Load)

  • In current practice of earthquake resistant design the equivalent lateral force procedure is widely used for its simplicity and convenience. But the equivalent lateral force procedure is derived based on the assumption that the dynamic behavior of the structure is governed primarily by the fundamental vibration mode. Therefore proper prediction of dynamic responses of the structure is unreliable using the equivalent lateral force procedure when the effect of higher vibration modes on the dynamic behavior is negligible. In this study design seismic load which can reflect the effect of higher vibration modes is proposed from the point of view of proper assessment of story shears which have the major influence on the design moment of beams and columns. To evaluate the effect of higher modes, differences between the story force based on the equivalent lateral force procedure specified in current earthquake resistance building code and the one based on modal analysis using design spectrum are examined. From these results improved design seismic load for the equivalent lateral force procedure which can reflect the effect of higher vibration modes is proposed.

Seismic analysis of bridges based on stress-dependent damping

  • Damping value has considerable influence on the dynamic and seismic behaviors of bridges. However, currently the constant damping ratios that are prescribed by most bridge seismic design codes can't truly represent the complicated damping character of actual structures. In this paper, a cyclic loading experiment was conducted to study the effect of stress amplitude on material damping of concrete to present an analyzing model of the material damping of concrete. Furthermore, based on the fundamental damping of structure measured under ambient vibration, combined with the presented stress-dependent material damping concrete, the seismic response of a bridge pier was calculated. Comparison between the calculated and experiment results verified the validity of the presented damping model. Finally, a modified design and analysis method for bridge was proposed based on stress-dependent damping theory, and a continuous rigid frame bridge was selected as the example to calculate the actual damping values and the dynamic response of the bridge under different earthquake intensities. The calculation results indicated that using the constant damping given by the Chinese seismic design code of bridges would overestimate the energy dissipation capacity of the bridge.

  • 최근 신설된 교량의 경우에는 개정판 도로교 설계기준에 의해 내진설계를 수행하여 시공되고 있으나, 내진설계규정이 적용되기 이전에 시공되어 사용중인 철근콘크리트 교각의 경우에는 지진에 취약할 수 있다. 반복 횡하중을 이용한 실내시험을 통해 교각 시험체를 니켈-크롬 합금강바 보강 전후 및 보강형태에 따른 부재의 거동변화를 측정분석 하였다.

  • Many structural engineers believed that RC underground structures like subway system might not be seriously damaged during earthquakes, until the Great Hanshin earthquake(a.k.a Kobe earthquake). But there is only one domestic seismic code of rapid transit system that established by Ministry of Construction & Transportation in 2005. Therefore, to investigate of current status on seismic design and evaluation method of rapid transit system is essential to estimate seismic performance of subway structural systems. In this study, comparing domestic codes and seismic evaluation methods with foreign system is performed.

Seismic retrofitting and fragility for damaged RC beam-column joints using UHP-HFRC

  • Reinforced concrete (RC) beam column joints (BCJ) have mostly exhibited poor seismic performance during several past earthquakes, typically due to the poor-quality concrete or lack of reinforcement detailing typical of pre-code design practice. The present study is motivated towards numerical simulation and seismic fragility assessment of one such RC-BCJ. The BCJ is loaded to failure and strengthened using Ultra High Performance-Hybrid Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHP-HFRC) jacketing. The strengthening is performed for four different BCJ specimens, each representing an intermediate damage state before collapse. viz., slight, moderate, severe, and collapse. From the numerical simulation of all the BCJ specimens, an attempt is made to correlate different modelling and design parameters of the BC joint with respect to the damage states. In addition, seismic fragility analysis of the original as well as the retrofitted damaged BCJ specimens show the relative enhancement achieved in each case.
