  • The higher sugar and lower starch in super sweet corn may be due to modified endosperm genes sh, bt series, but its seeds have major limiting factors causing low germination and low seedling vigor, This study was conducted to determine what measurable kernel characteristics during the grain tiling period might be more useful as a guide to optimize harvest date for good seed quality in hybrid super sweet corn production. Artificial crossing in super sweet corn hybrid (Chodangok 1) was made on the same day, and ears were harvested from 18 days to 53 days after pollination at weekly intervals. Kernel weight, moisture content, hardness, endosperm rate, seedling height and storage nutrients such as sugars, protein, starch, and germination rate were measured for the kernels at each harvest. Super sweet corn hybrid, Chodangok 1 presented satisfactory germination rate above 70% when harvested on 39 to 46 days after pollination. Its storage nutrients at that time were 23.7-24.2% in starch content 5.5-5.9% in total sugars, 38.9-46.6% in kernel moisture, and 62.7-64.2% in endosperm rate. Germination rate was extremely high when harvested on 39 days after pollination. The black layer of Chodangok 1 could not be used as an indicator for seed harvest. These results suggested that optimum harvest date seems to be 39 days, and kernel moisture and starch content could be used as indications of kernel maturity in deciding when to harvest fer good seed quality in super sweet corn.

  • Allelopathic effects on some crops(rice, barley, wheat, Chinese cabbage, leaf mustard, onion, welsh onion, tobacco, red pepper) for extracts of Phytolacca americana and Armoracia rusticana were investigated in MS solid medium. Germination percentage, radicle length, hypocotyl length, plant height, fresh weight, dry weight, and seedling vigor were rapidly inhibited by methanol extract from Phytolacca americana according to increase of the concentration in test plants. Autotoxicity of Phytolacca americana began to appear at concentrations greater than 50$\mu$l methanol extracts per 20ml medium. The fresh weight and dry weight of Phytolacca americana were also decreased by its own methanol extract according to increase of the concentration. Initial amounts of growth of all crops were also inhibited by methanol extracts from Armoracia rusticana, but the inhibitory effects were lowered than those of methanol extracts of Phytolacca americana. Of four fractions, ethyl acetate, petroleum ether, $1^{st}H_2O, 2^{nd}H_2O$, reextracted from methanol extracts of Phytolacca americana, the ethyl acetate fraction showed the highest allelopathic effects on germination percentage and initial amounts of growth. Chlorophyll contents of rice, barley and Chinese cabbage were more inhibited in the ethyl acetate fraction than in the other fractions. Free proline content of Chinese cabbage was increased 31.2 times in the 100$\mu l$ ethyl acetate fraction, and the contents of rice and barley were also increased according to concentration levels in the ethyl acetate fraction.

  • Seed coating and pelleting techniques have been used in many crops to improve the germination vigor of tiny and light seeds. Cultivated Chinese-foxglove (Rehmannia glutlnosa) has been infected by various types of virus derived from vagetative propagation of rootstock. Seed characteristics and alginate-coated seed germination rate have been investigated to get basic information for healthy seedling production through seed propagation. Chinese-foxglove showed different numbers of seeds per pod from 61 in Seocheon local to 207 in Jiwhang 1 and 1,000grain weight also varied from 70mg of Seocheon local to 130mg of Jiwhang 1. Seeds of Chinese-foxglove has dormancy because that seed collected last year more stimulated than that of this year at germination test. Optimum alginate concentration for pellected seeds germination was 2%.

  • The production of sweet (su) and super sweet corns (sh2) has been economically feasible in Korea in recent years. Major factors limiting super sweet corn production are low germination and low seedling vigor. Since seed quality is closely related to seed maturity, the optimum harvest time for the seed production of sweet and super sweet corns was studied and the quality of seeds with varying maturities was investigated in 2001 and 2002 cropping seasons. The parents of the sweet corn seeds were Hybrid Early Sunglow and 'Golden Cross Bantam 70' and those of super sweet corn were Xtrasweet 82 and 'Fortune'. Seeds were harvested at 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, and 56 days after silking (DAS). As the seeds developed, seed weight of sweet corn increased and the seed moisture content decreased faster than that of super sweet corn. Germination rates of sweet corn seeds harvested 21 and 28 DAS at $25^{\circ}C$ and emergence rates in the cold soil test were significantly lower than those of seeds harvested after 42 DAS in both years. Although the germination rates of super sweet corn seeds with varying maturities showed similar patterns as sweet corn seeds at $25^{\circ}C$, the emergence rate of super sweet corn seeds in cold soil test continuously increased with seed maturity. This suggests that seed quality of super sweet corn should be tested in a cold soil test to estimate field emergence. As the seeds developed, leakage of total sugars and electrolytes from the both sweet and super sweet corn seeds decreased up to 42 or 49 DAS. The $\alpha-amylase$ activities of both sweet and super sweet corn seeds increased with seed maturity from 21 to 35 or 49 DAS depending on genotype and year. The optimum harvest time for the seed production of sweet corn was 42 DAS and 49 DAS for super sweet corn considering emergence rate and plumule dry weight in the cold soil test, leakage of sugars and electrolytes from the seeds, and $\alpha-amylase$ activity.

  • In series of pasture improvement studies with herbicides on nonarable hilly area, the effects of different cutting intervals (10, 20, 30 and 40 days) after glyphosate (2.9 kg/ha active ingredient) application on establishment and development of surface-sown orchardgrass(Dactylis glomerata L.) and ladino clover (Trifolium repens L.) was measured during 1983-1984. The cutting intervals of the existing shrubs after glyphosate application had no differential effect on establishment, seedling vigor, dry matter yield of surface-sown pasture species and botanical composition of improved pasture. Results showed that good control of the existing shrubs for surface-sown pasture species can be achieved by cutting the shrubs from 10 to 40 days after glyphosate application.

  • We evaluated the morphological characteristics in 100 super sweet corn inbred lines, which were developed to breeding super sweet corn variety at Gyeongsangbuk-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services, by examining six quantitative and two qualitative characteristics. On the result of evaluation of two qualitative traits, most of inbred lines showed yellow (91 inbred lines) at seed color (QL1) and weak (68 inbred lines) at seedling vigor (QL2). In the survey of six quantitative traits, the average value for each trait indicated as follows: days of tasseling (QN1, 41.0 to 55.0 days), days of silking (QN2, 44.0 to 59.0 days), anthesis-silking interval (QN3, 2.0 to 7.0 days), tillering (QN4, 0.0 to 2.0), plant height (QN5, 96.0 to 187.0 cm) and ear height (QN6, 30.0 to 86.0 cm). In PCAs (principal component analysis) for 8 morphological characteristics, seedling vigor (QL2) and tillering (QN4) greatly contributed in negative direction and the days of tasseling (QN1) and days of silking (QN2) greatly contributed in positive direction on the first principal component. While, ear height (QN6) and plant height (QN5) contributed in positive direction on the second principal component. Thus these morphological traits, which were greatly contributed in the first and second principal components, might be considered to be useful for discrimination in 100 super sweet corn inbred lines. In our study, the results of morphological variation and PCAs for 100 super sweet corn inbred lines will be helpful for super sweet corn breeding programs such activities as planning crosses for hybrid and line development.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of temperature and light conditions on the vigor and growth responses of red pepper(Capsicum annuum L.) seedlings in the nonheated plastic houses with triple and quadruple coverings during winter. The results obtained were as follows ; 1. The growth in terms of plant height, number of leaves, leaf area and dry weight of each organ was reduced up to 50% in the triple coverings compared to quadruple ones. The greatest difference between the triple coverings and quadruple ones was the leaf area, showing two to five times larger in the quadruple ones. Therefore, the differences of the early environmental conditions during raising seedling stage was well reflected. 2. The leaf expansion in the early stage of seedling was delayed in the triple coverings and subsequently crop growth rate(CGR) significantly reduced. The specific leaf area (SLA) in the triple coverings was less than quadruple ones. The net assimilation rate (NAR) was increased in the early stage of seedlings and then reduced in the quadruple coverings. In triple ones, however, the great reduction showed at six weeks after sowing and then increased sharply. 3. The linear relationship among leaf area, total dry weight and leaf dry weight was observed in the all experimental areas, while between leaf area and crop growth rate only in the quadruple coverings, and between leaf area and net assimilation rate in both triple and quadruple ones. 4. The dry matter partitioned to the leaf increased up to six weeks after sowing in the triple coverings but reduced in the stem and root. However, the adverse results were obtained in the quadruple ones. 5. In the triple coverings, the number of branches showed the exponential increment while fruit weight showed linear increment in both triple and quadruple ones. Higher yield was obtained in the quadruple ones. 6. The shoot dry weight among the characteristics of seedlings was greatly contributed to the yield of red pepper after transplanting. Accordingly, one of the decisive criterion for good quality of red pepper seedlings was determined by the highest correlation between shoot dry weight of growing plant and fruit yield of pepper plant.

  • The aim of this research was to investigate the effect of gibberellin on improving seedling growth characteristics and enhancing strawberry quality in cutting propagation. Cuttings of the cultivar 'Seolhyang' were treated with GA3 for 30 and 60 minutes at concentrations of 50, 100, and 150 mg·L-1, with distilled water used for dipping as the control. Evaluation of seedling growth showed a positive correlation between the duration of gibberellin dipping and growth characteristics such as leaf number and SPAD value. Plant height, petiole length, leaf length and width, and leaf area varied significantly based on the interaction between dipping time and concentration. Crown diameter exhibited differences depending on the dipping time, with cuttings producing superior seedlings having a diameter of 8.0 mm or more for all treatments except the 30-minute, 100 mg·L-1 treatment. The T/R ratio was significantly lower in the 30-minute, 50 mg·L-1 treatment, indicating the highest plant vigor. Quantum yield was lower at a concentration of 150 mg·L-1, showing a decreasing trend with increasing gibberellin concentration. Nonphotochemical quenching was significantly smaller in the 30-minute, 150 mg·L-1 treatment, indicating an effective reduction of stress in the cuttings. Antioxidant content was highest in the 30-minute, 50 mg·L-1 treatment and the 60-minute, 150 mg·L-1 treatment. Moreover, the results of post-transplanting growth assessment showed no negative effect of gibberellin on flowering induction. Therefore, it was confirmed that gibberellin treatment during the cutting propagation of 'Seolhyang' strawberries had a positive effect on the production of high-quality seedlings. Dipping the cuttings in 50 mg·L-1 gibberellin for 30 minutes is considered to be the most suitable method for improving growth and quality compared to the control.

  • Seed germinability might be highly related to seedling establishment. The experiments were carried out to evaluate the effect of presowing treatments of aging, priming, $GA_3$ , prechilling and water imbibition, different temperatures and light quality during germination on germination of gourd (Lagenaria siceraria Standl.) seeds. Aging treatment with different temperatures and periods was done by the accelerated aging method. Priming using KNO$_3$ and $GA_3$ treatment for 24 hours were done at 100 mM and at 0.01 mM before a week prechilling. The germination tests using a week prechilled seeds were done at 10, 20 and $30^{\circ}C$ on the condition of darkness, and also with blue, red, far-red light and darkness as light quality treatments. FR-yongjadaemok and FR-kunghap were used as test cultivars and their daily germination rates were measured at treatment levels. Germination rates were reduced in the seeds aged at $45^{\circ}C$ for 6 days. Prechilling showed the highest and fastest rate among the four presowing treatments but the two other presowing treatments had similar or less rates than water imbibition. Prechilling done before sowing enhanced the low vigor seeds, and accelerated the germination of cv. FR-kunghap at 20 to $30^{\circ}C$ and with blue, red light or darkness during germination although far-red light inhibited their germination.

  • This experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of manure and chemical fertilizer on the forage yield and quality of oat at no-tillage. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design. The three treatments were: chemical fertilizer, manure fertilizer, and chemical and manure mixture. Seedling vigor was higher at chemical fertilizer than manure, but more greener at manure application than chemical fertilizer. Dry matter (DM) content of oat at manure was higher than chemical and mixture fertilizer (p<0.05). There was no difference in DM yield, TDN (total digestible nutrients) yield, and CP (crude protein) yield of oat at no-tillage system, but the fresh yield was significantly higher in chemical fertilizer compared to manure. The CP content for oat was significantly higher in manure than chemical fertilizer. However, no significant effects were observed for NDF (neutral detergent fiber), ADF (acid detergent fiber), TDN and RFV (relative feed value) in different fertilizer application. Based on the results of this study, manure don't affected forage production and quality of no-till oat except CP content because forage oat is used off-season crop.
