Some Management Practices Affecting Outcrossing and Seed Production in Burley Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) (연초 버어리종의 자연교잡율과 종자생산에 관련된 몇가지 요인)

  • In this study effects of isolation distance, transplanting time of maternal plants, and bagging of flower head with the gauze-cloth bag on the outcrossing of burley tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) were investigated. Also the effect of fertilizer level and control of the number of capsules per plant on seed production and quality were examined. A male sterile line. produced 0.3 to 3.8 capsules Per plant when it was Planted with normally flowering tobacco with the average outcrossing of 7.2 plants, ranging from 2 to 18 out of 20 plants. With the farther the isolation distance between maternal plants and pollen donor plant, the lower the outcrossing occurred. Outcrossing occurred even at the isolation distance of 312 m. When the maternal plants were transplanted 35 days after transplanting the pollen donor ones, the outcrossed plants were not decreased significantly. The bagging of the flower head with the gauze-cloth bas (#0.9∼ 1.0 mm) decreased the outcrossed plants significantly, but couldn't prevent the outcrossing completely. The seed amount per plant was higher in the highly fertilized cultivation. The number of seed capsules per plant affected significantly on seed yield and quality. When the seed capsules was controlled by 30 or 50 capsules per plant, the weight of 1,000 seeds and germination rate were higher than those with 70 or 90 capsules per plant. Characterization of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities in the grains of collected Sorghum bicolor varieties

  • The current study evaluated the presence and concentration of health-promoting phenolic antioxidants in sorghum seed accessions from seven regions in three different countries (Uzbekistan, Myanmar, and the United States). The free radical scavenging activity using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl assay was 13.10±2.37 ㎍/mL in the Uzbekistan sorghum seed extracts, demonstrating the highest antioxidant activity. Additionally, the total phenol content was the highest in the Uzbekistan sorghum seed extracts [157.87±4.04 mg GAE/g (gallic acid equivalents per gram)]. The total flavonoid content was 12.69±0.72 mg QE/g (quercetin equivalents per gram) and represents the highest value in the Myanmar collection. The Uzbekistan collection demonstrated the greatest potential for whitening activity, with the tyrosinase inhibition rate of 79.20±4.15%. The wrinkle improvement function using elastase also showed the highest anti-aging activity of 55.85±4.78% in the same seed extract. The Uzbekistan seed extract had the highest NO production inhibitory activity of 144.35±4.55%. We conclude from these results that the Uzbekistan sorghum seed has excellent antioxidant activity, content of various functional ingredients, and anti-inflammatory activity.

  • This trial was carried out to find out the optimum ridge and seeding rate for the seed production of Festuca arundinacea S. (variety Alta). It was composed of three ridge level (12, 18 and 24cm) and four seeding rates (10, 15, 20 and 25kg/ha) in a split-plot design with 4 replications. The experiment lasted from September 1979 to October 1981. 1. The beginning of heading state was May 12 and the date of full flowering stage was June 2. The optimum stage for the seed harvesting of Festuca arundinacea was about 43 days after beginning of heading stage. 2. The number of panicles were 157 per square meter from the best treatment 18cm ridge with 15kg seed/ha. And the 1000 grain weight was 2.79g for the treatment 12cm ridge with 10kg seed/ha. 3. The average seed yield for two years was 681kg/ha and the largest 831kg/ha for the treatment 18cm ridge with 25kg seed/ha. 4. the average germination rate of the harvested seed was 90.7 percent, and it showed a little higher germination rate from the lower level of seeding rate. 5. The average total DM production with two cuttings of aftermath was about 6715kg/ha. According to the increasing seeding rate and narrowing the ridge, DM yield was higher.

An Optimum Harvest Time for Chinese Milk Vetch (Astragalus sinicus L.) Seed Production (자운영 종자생산을 위한 적정 수확시기 구명)

  • To determine an optimum harvest time for chinese milk vetch (CMV) seed production, the seeds were harvested at 4 times, according to 25, 30, 35, and 40 day after flowering (DAF), in Miryang, southern part of Korea. CMV plants were manually harvested at each time and seed threshing was done by rice threshing machine. Seed yield, 1,000-seed weight, germinability, and hard coat ratio were investigated. Seed yield was the highest, 53.9 kg/300 kg by dry weight (DW) of CMV plant, at 35 DAF. 1,000-seed weight increased according to seed harvest time from 25 DAF to 40 DAF when it was 3.10 g. The germination ratios of seeds harvested at 4 times were not significantly different when the seeds stored until August 1. In case of long period of CMV seeds stored, the seeds harvested later showed higher germination rate. On the other hand, because the hard coat ratio causing germination inhibition was declined with an increase of storage period, it was higher in the seeds harvested later. There was no difference among the seeds harvested at 4 times at October 1. In conclusion, it was presumed that an optimum harvest time for CMV seed production should be at 35 DAF considering seed yield, weight and germinability.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the dry matter production and distribution ratio of dry matter produced for each of 5 botanical types (Virginia-Small Seed, Virginia-Large Seed, Spanish, Valencia, Shinpung) of Peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.) in Peanut culture limiting region. The total dry weight increased in order of Virginia-Large seed, Virginia- Small Seed, Shinpung, Spanish, Valencia type. The maximum Crop growth rates (Cmax) were Virginia-Small seed 18.22-23.41 g/㎡/day, Virginia-Large seed 19.61-20.03 g/㎡/day, Shinpung 16.33-19.77 g/㎡/day, Spanish 13.86-16.28 g/㎡/day, Valencia 13.97-16.25g/㎡/day, respectively. LAI showed the high value at vinyl-mulching than non-mulching. In the early filling stage, distribution ratio of dry matter produced showed the highest at the shinpung type than the other types.

The characteristics of seed production in an Adonis multiflora (Ranunculaceae) population

  • A natural population of Adonis multiflora, a spring ephemeral herb growing in temperate deciduous forests, was studied to determine the seed production characteristics. Plant size, flowering time, and seed number were monitored from February 2009 to May 2011 in main growing season (i.e., from March through May). The biomass rates of the shoot and the root in the A. multiflora population were 22-24% and 76-78%, respectively, and the biomass of the root was proportional to that of the shoot. The flowering rate was 60% in the plants with 1 to 2 g of shoot biomass, and 100% in the plants with >2 g of shoot biomass. In the plants with root biomass between 4 and 6 g, the flowering rate was 43% and, in the plants with the root biomass over 8 g, it was 100%. The shoot biomass was a better predictor of the flower production probability than the root biomass. The number of flowers and seeds was closely correlated to shoot biomass at 1% significance level. The size of the plant that produced seed excessively instead of the shoot biomass in one year typically decreased in the next year and vice versa. The flowering time and its duration were closely related to the number of faithful seeds but not to that of total seeds. The number of faithful seeds was proportionate to flowering duration and inversely proportionate to flowering time (year day, YD). In a plant, the number of faithful seeds noticeably decreased with the inflorescence (i.e., order of flower in a plant), and this difference between the two successive flowers was significant at the 1% level between the first and the third flower in 2009 and 2011 but not between the third and the fourth. However, the number of total seeds was mostly similar in the first through the fourth flower for all three years.

  • A new tall fescue variety (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) named Greenmaster and Purumi were. In this study, we evaluated the seed production of new tall fescue domestic varieties were cultivated in Korea. Agronomic aspects of tall fescue domestic varieties were determined using seed production and forage nutritive value of straw at the National Institute of Animal Science from 2013 to 2014. The heading date according to the varieties displayed differences and domestic varieties showed enhanced disease resistance. The harvested seed yields of Greenmaster was 35% higher as 1,664 kg/ha and it's also yield of straw higher than that of Fawn. However, the nutritive value of both varieties was similar. The dry matter yield of Pumumi was 25% higher as 11,080 kg/ha. Accordingly, developed a new variety of domestic tall fescue with excellent environmental adaptability, aiming to make contribution to the vitalization of the Korean grassland industry.

  • Many antinutritional and toxic factors abound in tropical seeds, which are also generally rich in nutrients and therefore more prone to attack from herbivores. Antinutritional and toxic factors are considered to defend seeds against environmental vagaries and thus help to protect them. These factors though good for the plant, cause deleterious effects or are even toxic to animals and man. The conventional seeds cultivated for oil or non-oil purposes, and general aspects of antinutritional factors are not presented here as these have already been discussed widely by many workers. Deficits in conventional protein and energy sources in the tropics have stimulated a quest for alternative feeds both for animals and humans. This article attempts to highlight two new oilseed crops, Jatropha curcas and Moringa oleifera, and in addition deals with some under-utilized seeds with potential as animal feed. Most of these seed plants are adapted to various marginal growing conditions in the tropics and can help to mitigate the prevailing deficit in protein and energy sources. Antinutritional and toxic factors in seed or seed meal, various approaches to detoxify seed meal, and future research and development priorities for their exploitation as animal feeds are presented.

  • North American ginseng production may have been maximized in the traditional growing areas in the last decade and further increases may be in woods grown root, for niche markets. The marketplace demands high quality roots. Most problems leading to low quality roots start with the grower and can be avoided. These include poor site selection, inadequate soil drainage, untimely and poorly applied pesticides, and neglect of good sanitary practices. Selection of low lying sites increased the plant damage from frost in Ontario in May 2002. Seeding is still the major method of propagation of ginseng in spite of some success in culturing different parts of the plant. Opportunities exist for shortening the stratification period of North American ginseng seed to allow spring planting. This may reduce disease incidence. Since only one-third of ginseng seed sown ultimately produces plants harvested after 3 years any approach that reduces disease incidence and improves seed germination, seedling emergence and crop stand must be pursued. Disease is the major problem in ginseng cutivation from seed stratification, soil preparation prior to planting, right through to drying of the roots. Replant disease remains as an unresolved problem and needs full characterization and new approaches for control. Much progress has been made in research and related extension activities in disease control although challenges will arise such as with Quintozene and its replacement with Quadris for control of diseases caused by Rhizoctonia. Decreased labor populations and increased associated costs for ginseng production are causing rapid mechanization in every aspect of the ginseng industry. Engineers, machinery dealers, and fabricators, and growers are being challenged to increase efficiency by mechanization.
