  • In order to obtain the basic data that could be used to evaluate the harvest time of new hardy kiwifruit cultivars (Actinidia arguta 'Saehan', 'Daesung' and 'Chilbo'), the seasonal fruit quality and ripening characteristics of hardy kiwifruit were investigated. Fruit sizes of 'Saehan', 'Daesung' and 'Chilbo' were increased from full bloom to 66 days, 85 days and 78 days, respectively. The growth curve of developing fruit of three cultivars showed double sigmoid. As a result of correlation analysis, the seed number per fruit showed a significant positive correlation with fruit weight (r = 0.94~0.97, p<0.01). Fruit length, width, thickness, weight, soluble solid content and titratable acidity were significantly different among the cultivars. Titratable acidity was increased from full bloom to harvest time and the titratable acidity of 'Saehan', 'Daesung' and 'Chilbo' were 1.77%, 1.22% and 1.37% on havest time, respectively. Optimal harvest time of 'Saehan' was 108 days (23 Sep.) after full bloom, those of 'Daesung' and 'Chilbo' were 92 (9 Sep.) days after full bloom.

  • In this research, we surveyed the yield change of garlic cultivation with seed bulbs according to annual field culture after induced meristem culture. From 2007 to 2013, yearly produced seed bulbs from $2^{nd}$ to $8^{th}$ generation were cultivated in the Muan field. Over the generations, the general growth characteristics such as the plant height, leaf number, leaf length and stem diameter were all decreased. When we compared the conventional seed bulbs and TCR ones, the plant height and stem diameter showed bigger difference. And the TCR seed bulbs showed a week late harvest time against the conventional ones. The yield of $2^{nd}$ generation was 72.3 g and 57.1 g for the $8^{th}$ generation. However every generation showed higher yield than conventional seed garlic's ones as 43.9 g. The yield index showed the same trend as $2^{nd}-8^{th}$ to 63% to 21%. After the tissue culture of garlics, the viral infections (OYDV and GSV) of TCR was far less than that of conventional ones. In case of LYSV, the infection ratio was 6.7% at $2^{nd}$ generation and 26% at $8^{th}$. However, the ratio was far less than that (80%) of the conventional ones.

  • Experiments were carried out to investigate the utilization of paraquat and diquat as desiccants for harvest-aid of sesame. When paraquat and diquat were sprayed at 3days or 3hours before cutting of sesame plants, moisture content in treated plots was evenly rapidly decreased and sesame yeild was not significantly different as compared with that in untreated plot. Percentage of germination of sesame seed in treated plots was similar to that in untreated check. Residual amount in sesame seed was not detectable when these chemicals were treated with 250ppm at 3days before cutting of sesame plant. Percentage of thrashing was high in sesame plants treated with paraquat and diauat with the lapse of time after cutting. Required labor in thrashing of sesame was reduced when applied with these chemicals. Harvest efficiency of sesame after spray of paraquat and diquat was good by comparison with the traditional practice.

  • The germination inhibitory effects of American ginseng (Panax quinquefolium Linne) pulp were discussed. The germination inhibitory effects of pulp juice were decreased in a concentration dependent manner. When the pulp juice was diluted 0 (original juice), 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 times, the radicle lengths of the assay plant, Chinese cabbage (Brassica chinensis Linne), showed 0, 0.32, 0.72, 3.13, 4.83, 16.07, 16.73 and 23.50 mm, respectively (CK=25.98 mm). The pulp evidently inhibited the embryo growth in natural fruit. The longer was the duration that the pulp stayed around the seed, the longer was the time course needed for embryo getting free from the inhibitory effects of pulp. When the depulping was performed on the day 0, 15, 30 and 60 after harvest, the time courses needed for embryo extricating the residual inhibitory effects from pulp were 30, 75, 135 and 135 days, respectively. Moreover, if the pulp stayed around the seed with time, that would make the seed rotten ratio increase. When the pulp stayed around the seed for 0, 15, 30, 60 and 270 days, the seed rotten ratios were 5.47, 5.71, 19.05, 27.14 and 33.33%, respectively. Therefore, we concluded that the pulp could be included in the inhibitory components which made American ginseng seed get into dormancy.

  • To secure raw materials of biodiesel production, the possibility of camellia (C. japonica L.) and tea (C. sinensis L.) seed oil was studied to produce biodiesel. In this research, crude oil contents and fatty acid compositions of seeds were analyzed by Solxlet and Gas chromatography (GC). The oil contents in the seeds of camellia were 69.8%~73.8%, and tea were 26.3%~29.4%. Among the fatty acids of camellia and tea oil, oleic acid was dominant. The unsaturated fatty acids accounted for 88.4% and 80.2% of the whole fatty acids of camellia and tea seed oil. Total seed oil content and fatty acid composition of tea seed were influenced by collecting date. Across maturation period, oil content of tea seed averaged 18.3% on $6^{th}$ September increasing to 27.9% by $11^{th}$ October. For largest seed yield and oil content, the optimum time to harvest tea is in middle october, and camellia is late september and thereafter. The extraction efficiency of oil from seeds by extraction methods was determined. Biodiesel were synthesized in 92.1~92.8% yields from camellia and tea oils by transesterification. The biodiesel was characterized by its physical and fuel properties including oxidation stability, iodine value and cold filter plugging point (CFPP). Oxidation stability of camellia was 8.6~8.8 hours and tea was 2.9~3.6 at $110^{\circ}C$. Camellia oil had considerably better oxidation stability and CFPP than tea oil.

  • Pericarp and seedcoat removal treatments were tested to determine their effectiveness in the hard-to-germinate botanical seeds of jerusalem artichoke. Fresh seed of five Helianthus tuberosus L.varieties were (A)untreated (B)water soaked overnight (C) soaked overnight followed by renoval of pericarp or (D) soaked overnight followed by renoval of pericarp and seedcoat. The results indicate that treatments which removed the pericarp and seedcoat were the very effective, giving germination of over 90%. A considerable increase in germination did not follow only the peri-carp removal treatments. The factors inhibitory to germination of fresh jerusalem artichoke seed is associated withthe seedcoat. The removal treatment of pericarp and seed-cost is recommended despite its complexity because it givesa high germination percentage and varies least from varietyto variety. Heliarthus tuberosus L., a biomass potential crop, is a member of the family compositae. The genus Helianthushas provided man with two food plants, the sunflower (H.annus) and the jerusalem artichoke or topinambour (H. tube-rosus) . (3) The jerusalem artichoke grown for its tubers, has always been an extremely minor crop, but it is stillgrown in many places as a food for man or livestock and forthe production of alcohoL. Though tubers are used for pro-pagation jerusalem artichoke also flower and produce seedin head-like in florescences. Flowers are developed acro-petaLly on flattened receptacles such that outermost flowers are oldest. Each of these epigynous flowers may develop an achene-type fruit in which outer layers of the overy wallpersist, while inner layers become disorganized. Insidethe ovary wall of mature fruit, there is a papery seedcoat, probably composed of compact cells from endosperm, integu-ments, and nucellus. In general, the efforts to improving this crop havebeen hampered by the hard-to-germinate botanical seed.Seeds did not germinate for at least IL months after harvest.Fresh seeds of some varieties require one year more to gar-minate. (5) Since the time factor between generations isof concern in a prospective breeding program of jerusalemartichoke , these observations led to investigation of thenature of delayed seed germination in jerusalem artichokeas a biomass potential crop.

  • This experiment was carried out in order to determine the optimum harvesting time of tetraploid Italian ryegrass. Moisture content, 1000-seed weight, germination and seed shattering were investigated at six harvesting times after anthesis in 1984 at Suweon. The results are summarized as follows; 1. Seed moisture content was slowly decreased until 24 days and fastly decreased from 24 days after anthesis. The daily mean moisture loss during the ripening period was about 1.5 percentage. 2. The maximum 1000-seed weight was reached at 24 days after anthesis and 1000-seed weight of Waseking was heavier than that of Giant. 3. Shattering began at 17-20 days after anthesis and thereafter rapidly increased. 4. Germination was 50% at 10 days after anthesis and maximum germination was reached at 24 days. 5. Considering germination, 1000-seed weight and shattering, the optimum harvest time was 24 to 27 days after anthesis. At this time, moisture content was 55.0 to 43.5 percent and two to five seeds per ten spikes were shed by shaking at the vertical point.

  • Seed dormancy is an adaptive trait in which seeds do not germinate under unfavorable environmental conditions. Low dormancy seeds are easily germinated under optimal environmental conditions, and these characteristics greatly reduce the yield and quality of crops. In the present study, we compared the pre-harvest sprouting (PHS) rate of two cultivars, Joun and Jopyeong, using the Winkler scale after heading day and temperature of the test. The PHS rate increased as the Winkler scale after heading day increased from 700℃ to 1100℃ and the temperature of the test increased. In all conditions, the PHS rate of Jopyeong was higher than that of Joun. RNA-sequencing was used to analyze the cause of the high PHS rate. We analyzed the biological metabolic processes related to the abscisic acid (ABA) metabolite pathway using the KEGG mapper with selected differentially expressed genes in PHS seeds. We found that the expression of ABA biosynthesis genes (OsNCEDs) was down-regulated and that ABA catabolic genes (OsCYP707As) was up-regulated in PHS seeds. However, the quantitative real-time PCR results showed that Joun had a higher expression of OsNCEDs than that of Jopyeong, but OsCYP707As did not yield a significant result. Joun displayed higher ABA content than that of Jopyeong not only during ripeness time but also during PHS treatment. Taken together, we provided evidence that the ABA content remaining in the seed is important to the PHS rate, which is determined by the expression level of the ABA biosynthesis gene OsNCEDs.
