In mountain gully, channelized debris flow is an important phenomenon in the process of topographical change. Social infrastructure as roads may be damaged by channelized debris flows, but there has been little information about their occurrence and movement to prepare for the risk of the debris flow. Most of the channelized debris flows occur during heavy rains in mountainous valleys that are difficult to access, so there are not many field data. In this study, the topographical characteristics of the catchment, the rainfall and runoff related to the debris flow, the sedimentary pattern and the cross-sectional change of the channel bed, and the underflow velocity of the gravel bed have been investigated and analyzed in the Singi gully where the channelized debris flows occurred. In the catchment, there was almost no sediment runoff because the vegetation combine with the debris landforms and covered the surface. Therefore, the obvious cause of the channelized debris flows is the collapse of the slope and bed of the gully. Even if the gravel, cobbles, and boulders of the channel bed were lost by debris flow, the thalweg change due to debris flow may not be significant because they are supplied from the gully side slope normally. After the gabion structures were installed, the debris flow increased the thalweg change, bed erosion and side slope of the gully. Various sedimentary structures in the gully were classified according to the factors supporting the sedimentation. The hypsometric curve of the gully reflects the debris landforms and vegetation characteristics of the watershed and the sediment runoff due to debris flow, etc. The relationship between the flow velocity and the hydraulic gradient was non-linear under the condition that the porous medium with gully bed gravels is saturated with water. These results may be used as basic data for channelized debris flow research.
Recent researches on debris flow is focused on understanding its movement mechanism and building a numerical simulator to predict its behavior. However, previous simulators emulating fluid-like debris flow have limitations in numerical stability, geometric modeling and application of various boundary conditions. In this study, depth integration is applied to continuity equation and force equilibrium for debris flow. Thickness of sediment, and average velocities in x and y flow direction are chosen for main variables in the analysis, which improve numerical stability in the area with zero thickness. Petrov-Galerkin formulation uses a discontinuous test function of the weighted matrix from DG scheme. Presented mechanical constitutive model combines fluid and granular behaviors for debris flow. Effects on slope angle, inducing debris height, and bottom friction resistance are investigated for a simple slope. Numerical results also show the effect of embankment at the bottom of the slope. Developed numerical simulator can assess various risk factors for the expected area of debris flow, and facilitate embankment design in order to minimize damage.

In this study, we formed a detailed grid at the estuary area of the Nakdong and collected the surface sediments. Particle size analysis and comparison with existing data were conducted to investigate the characteristics of seasonal and long-term changes in the sediments. As a result of investigation, the distribution of the sediments showed a great change per season and was greatly influenced by the quantity of outfall discharge at the Nakdong estuary barrier and the incident wave climate. The sandy sediments showed dominant movement toward the front of Jinwoodo west of the estuary area of the Nakdong due to the influence of the ENE wave, the annually-dominant wave. And the muddy sediments showed deposition by being moved toward the deep open sea along with a current. The present conditions of the sediments at the estuary area of the Nakdong showed great differences from the results of previous studies.

Old train carriages have been used to create artificial reefs (AR) as part of programs to enhance ocean fisheries and recreational resources. This study conducted hydraulic modeling experiments to estimate the structural stability of a train carriage AR. By applying fixed- and movable-bed conditions and Froude similitude, theoretical and hydraulic experiments revealed major design forces(e.g., water waves and currents). The results of this study showed that some dimensionless design parameters (e.g., surf similarity parameters, water particle velocity, scouring, and deposition) also affect the stability of an AR under various wave and current field conditions. In the fixed-bed condition, movement of the AR occurred when dimensionless water particle velocity based on the surf similarity parameter was larger than about 0.32. In the moveable-bed condition, the settlement depth (field values) of the AR ranged from 6 to 30 cm. The results indicated that characteristics of the sediment/bed condition and the direction of external forces acting on an AR should be considered when selecting AR sites.
Tidal sand ridges and sand waves are well developed in the Yellow Sea off Tae-An Peninsula, Korea. Their transport directions were inferred based on high resolution seismic profiles, surficial sediment characteristics and tidal regime. Tidal sand ridges are asymmetric, with long axes parallel to or slightly oblique to the dominant NE-SW tidal current direction. They show steep south and/or southeast flanks, which are in concordance with the apparent direction of internal cross-bedding in the south. Holocene sediments occur in accordance with distributional patterns of tidal sand ridges. These features indicate that Holocene active tidal sand ridges move toward the open sea in southeast, south and southwest direction. Sand waves which are distributed in flat sea floor with depth of about 40-60m show also asymmetric forms with a steep east-to-northeast face. Surficial sediments in the sand wave field are characterized by well sorted fine sands compared with poorly sorted adjacent areas. The sand waves appear to undergo easterly or northeasterly landward movement.
A 450 m-long sediment section was recovered from Hole U1359D located at the eastern levee of the Jussieau submarine channel on the Wilkes Land continental rise (East Antarctica) during IODP Expedition 318. The age model for Hole U1359D was established by paleomagnetic stratigraphy and biostratigraphy, and the ages of core-top and core-bottom were estimated to be about 5 Ma and 13 Ma, respectively. Biogenic opal content during this period varied between 3% and 60%. In the Southern Ocean, high biogenic opal content generally represents warm climate characterized by the increased light availability due to the decrease of sea-ice distribution. The surface water productivity change in terms of biogenic opal content at about 10.2 Ma in the Wilkes Land continental rise was related to the development of Northern Component Water. After about 10.2 Ma, more production of Northern Component Water in the North Atlantic caused to increase heat transport to the Southern Ocean, resulting in the enhanced diatom production. Miocene isotope events (Mi4~Mi7), which are intermittent cooling intervals during the Miocene, appeared to be correlated to the low biogenic opal contents, but further refinement was required for precise correlation. Biogenic opal content decreased abruptly during 6 Ma to 5.5 Ma, which most likely corresponds to the Messinian salinity crisis. Short-term variation of biogenic opal content was related to the extent of sea-ice distribution associated with the location of Antarctic Polar Front that was controlled by glacial-interglacial paleoclimate change, although more precise dating and correlation will be necessary. Diatom production in the Wilkes Land continental rise increased during the interglacial periods because of the reduced sea-ice distribution and the southward movement of Antarctic Polar Front.

A time-series sediment trap was operated at a water depth of 4950 m from July 2003 to May 2004 at KOMO station ($10^{\circ}30^{\prime}N$, $131^{\circ}20^{\prime}W$) in the northeastern equatorial Pacific, with the aim of understanding the temporal variation of planktonic foraminifera assemblages in response to the seasonal shift of Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). A total of 22130 planktonic foraminifera specimens belonging to 30 species and 11 genera were identified, which shows a distinct seasonal variation with high values (125~288 specimens $m^{-2}day^{-1}$) in the winter to spring (December-May) and low values (16~23 specimens $m^{-2}day^{-1}$) in the fall (September-November). In addition, seasonal ecological differences of foraminifera assemblages are distinctly recognizable: omnivorous foraminifera occurred predominantly during the summer season, whereas herbivorous ones were dominant during the winter season. Such seasonal variations correspond to the seasonal shift of the ITCZ. Enhanced occurrence of herbivorous species during the winter-spring season seems a result of surface water mixing generated by the southward shift of the ITCZ. The increase in omnivorous species during the summer season may be due to the northward movement of the ITCZ caused by weakened wind speed, resulting in the intensification of water column stratification and nutrient-poor environment. A significant reduction of planktonic foraminifera specimens during the fall is attributed to heavy precipitation and reduction in light intensity.
It was preliminarily considered that Jangdo wetland was a concave landform formed by the weathering of granite intruding Precambrian silicified metasedimentary rocks. Various granite-weathered topography was observed. The formation scenario of Jangdo wetland is as follows. By flood or slope mass movement of regolith, rock fragments were moved to form a low-relief slope landform. As a result, wetland was formed. By analyzing the slope soil and wetland sediment, we conjectured that Jangdo wetland depended on the influence of peripheral slope soil. In these concavelandform environment, the supply of water and organic materials was sustained for a long time to form a organicnondegradable wetland environment. In addition, the plants appropriate to this wetland environment were settled to thicken the wetland. This is how the present Jangdo wetland was thought to be formed.

The flow zone through propeller jets are used in evaluating the environmental and constructional effects of navigation on the waterway. It relies on the characteristics of ships and water depth. A numerical model using the momentum theory of the propeller and Shield's diagram was developed in a restricted waterway. Equations for discharge are presented based on thrust coefficients and propeller speed and are the most accurate means of defining discharge. Approximate methods for discharge are developed based on applied ship's power. Equations for discharge are as a function of applied power, propeller diameter, and ship speed. Water depth of the waterway and draft of the shop are also necessary for the calculation of the grain size of the initial motion. The velocity distribution of discharge from the propeller was simulated by the Gaussian normal distribution function. The shear velocity and shear stress were from the Sternberg's formula. Case studies to show the influence of significant factors on sediment movement induced by the ship's propeller at the channel bottom are presented.

A fully non-linear two-dimensional model for studying basic tidal dynamics within the Arabian Gulf has been formulated. The model extends to the east as far as continental shelf edge and has a mesh resolution of 1/12 degree latitude by 1/10 degree longitude. The developed model was used to investigate the distribution of dominant $M_2$, $S_2$, $K_1$, $O_1$ and $N_2$ tides adopting the open boundary tidal information from Schwiderski's global ocean tidal model. Computed co amplitude and cophase charts were presented independently and comparison between these charts and existing Admiralty tidal charts were made. Maximum bottom stress vector during the semidiurnal period due to $M_2$ and $M_4$ tides are also presented to suggest the possible direction of sediment movement in the region.
