  • A general method of calculating the frequency shift due to lattice defects is developed for a one dimensional lattice with an arbitrary number of lattice points. The method is based on the Fourier transform of the equation of motion. It is shown that the frequency spectrum is determined by the roots of 5${\times}$5 secular equation, the coefficients of which depend on defects in the mass and the force constant as well as the number of the lattice points. For the limiting case of infinite lattice, the dimension of the secular equation reduces to three and the result agrees with that of Montroll and Potts.

  • In this article, a comparative study has been made to investigate the scattering behaviour of three layered structure model on torsional surface wave. For such model intermediate layer is taken as fiber reinforced composite, resting over a dry sandy Gibson substratum and underlying by different anelastic media. We consider two distinct mediums for topmost layer. In the first case, topmost layer has been taken as fluid saturated homogeneous porous layer, while in the second case the fluid saturated porous layer has been replaced by a transversely isotropic layer. Simple form expression for the secular equation of torsional surface wave has been worked out in both the cases by executing specific boundary conditions, which comprises Whittaker's function and its derivative, for imminent result that have been elaborated asymptotically. Some special cases have been constituted which are in excellent compliance with recorded literatures. For the sake of comparative study, numerical estimation and graphical illustration have been accomplished to identify the effects of the width ratio of the layers, Biot's gravity parameter, sandy parameter, porosity parameter and other heterogeneity parameters corresponding to the layers and half spaces, horizontal compressive and tensile initial stress on the phase velocity of torsional surface wave.

  • The parent and daughter nuclides in a radioactive decay chain arrive at secular equilibrium once they have a large half-life difference. The characteristics of this equilibrium state can be used to estimate the production time of nuclear materials. In this study, a mathematical model and algorithm that can be applied to radio-chronometry using the radioactive equilibrium relationship were investigated, reviewed, and implemented. A Bateman equation that can analyze the decay of radioactive materials over time was used for the mathematical model. To obtain a differential-based solution of the Bateman equation, an algebraic numerical solution approach and two different matrix exponential functions (Moral and Levy) were implemented. The obtained result was compared with those of commonly used algorithms, such as the Chebyshev rational approximation method and WISE Uranium. The experimental analysis confirmed the similarity of the results. However, the Moral method led to an increasing calculation uncertainty once there was a branching decay, so this aspect must be improved. The time period corresponding to the production of nuclear materials or nuclear activity can be estimated using the proposed algorithm when uranium or its daughter nuclides are included in the target materials for nuclear forensics.

  • In this article, a novel propagation formulation of Rayleigh waves in a compressible isotropic half-space with impedance boundary condition is proposed by embedding the normal stress. In a two-dimensional case, it is assumed that a design boundary is free of normal traction and a shear traction depends on linearly a normal component of displacements multiplied by frequencies. Therefore, impedance boundary conditions affect the normal stress, where the impedance parameters correspond to dimensions of stresses over velocity. On the other hand, vanished impedance values are traction-free boundary conditions. The main purpose of this article is to present theoretically the existence and uniqueness of a Rayleigh wave formulation relying on secular equation's mathematical analyses. Its velocity varies along with the impedance parameters. Moreover, numerical experiments with different values for the velocity of Rayleigh waves are carried out. The present Rayleigh waves study is a fundamental step in analyzing the cause and effect of physical states such as building or structure damages resulting from natural dynamics. The results of the study generate a basic design formulation theory to test the effects of Rayleigh waves affecting structures when an earthquake occurs. The presence and uniqueness of the proposed formulation is verified by mutual comparisons of several numerical examples.

  • The secular trend and seasonal variation of chestnut prices have been analyzed, and the production and price for the next two decades (1985-2004) have been forecasted by the derived equation model. The results of the study can be summarized as follows; 1) The chestnut prices went up at the rate of 10.95% per annum during 1965-1972, but, due to excessive supply of chestnuts, went down at the rate of 7.25% during 1973-1984. 2) In a year, the prices were lowest at the harvesting season, especially on October, and highest on July. Such a seasonal fluctuations of chestnut prices tend to be even with the passage of time, but the range of fluctuation is still wide. 3) It was forecasted under certain premises that the annual chestnut production will be increased by 99,000 tons in 1992, but the amount will fall rapidly to about 23,000 tons in 2004. The prices will be similar to the present level or have slightly upward Tendency until 1992, but this will be rapidly raised thereafter.

  • Long-term changes in the hydrological characteristics of a small forest watershed were examined using a master baseflow recession curve and the measured rainfall-runoff data from the experimental forest watershed in the measured years 2003-2011. The results of the study showed that the recession coefficient of direct runoff was lower than that of baseflow. In small forested watershed, the direct flow was lower than that of large scale watershed, flow due to its shorter period of occurrence. And baseflow was similar to large scale watershed's. A regression equation $y=0.7528e^{-0.022x}$($R^2=0.8938$, range 0.3~0.8 mm) was obtained using the master baseflow recession curve for the study period and the recession coefficient was calculated as K = 0.978. Changes between master baseflow recession curve and runoff showed great association and relevance such as increasing runoff was associated with the gentle slope of master baseflow recession curve and decreasing runoff was associated with the slope of master baseflow recession curve contrary. In the later years of the study period, the slope of the master baseflow recession curve appreciably became more gentle due to increases in baseflow. This suggests that the forested experimental watershed exhibit improved structural functioning of normal flood control and reduced occurrence of water shortage problems.

  • The CCD photometric observations of W UMa-type eclipsing binary AB And were made from September 1994 to October 1996. New four primary minimum times were obtained from these observations. The analysis of times of minimum light for AB And confirms other previous studies that the orbital period of AB And have been changing as a form of sinusoidal variation. In this paper, we calculated the new orbital elements with linear and nonlinear quadratic term, and the best fit equation is derived with the assumption that the period variation of AB And changes sinusoidal pattern. From the sinusoidal term of this orbital element, we calculate period variation as 92 years with amplitude of $0.^{d}059$. However this result considering only sinusoidal term, was not satisfied with our recent observations. Thus, by assuming another parabolic period variation with the sinusoidal pattern, we derived the best fit orbital elements. From the quadratic coefficient of this orbital elements, we calculated the secular variation of 0.73 seconds, and from the sinusoidal term, the period variation turned out to be 62.9 years with amplitude of $0.^{d}024$. If we assume only the sinusoidal period variation of AB And, the period has to be decreased within 10 years. However if we consider quadratic term with the sinusoidal period variation of the light elements, the period is expected to be increased. Therefore long-term observations of this binary system are required to confirm this issue.

  • A total of 213 rabbits was investigated from July 1981 to June 1986, for the survey on the incidence of Cysticercus pisiformis infections and the morphological characteristics were observed for the descriptions on the scolexes of the cysts collected. The results obtained were summarized as follows; The overall infection rate was revealed as high as 21.6% and it increased annually with the secular trend equation Y=7.45X+5.87 when, Y=infection rate estimated, X=year 0(1981) to 5 (1986). The incidence was no relation with the sexes of the host, but it was higher in the short-haired New Zealand White than in the long-haired Angola. It was also revealed that the liver was the most parasitized organ (39.1%) and that 48 cases were double infections in two organs, such as the mesentery, the stomach or the kidney. The mean size of the cysts measured was 7.04mm in length and 4.62mm in width. There were four suckers and a rostellum on the top of the scolex identified inside the cyst. The hooks were arranged in two rows, the large-type inner hooks (mean $250{\mu}m$ in length) and the small-type outer hooks (mean $150{\mu}m$ in length).
