  • The present work deals with second order statistics of post buckling response of piezoelectric laminated composite cylindrical shell panel subjected to hygro-thermo-electro-mechanical loading with random system properties. System parameters such as the material properties, thermal expansion coefficients and lamina plate thickness are assumed to be independent of the temperature and electric field and modeled as random variables. The piezoelectric material is used in the forms of layers surface bonded on the layers of laminated composite shell panel. The mathematical formulation is based on higher order shear deformation shell theory (HSDT) with von-Karman nonlinear kinematics. A efficient $C^0$ nonlinear finite element method based on direct iterative procedure in conjunction with a first order perturbation approach (FOPT) is developed for the implementation of the proposed problems in random environment and is employed to evaluate the second order statistics (mean and variance) of the post buckling load of piezoelectric laminated cylindrical shell panel. Typical numerical results are presented to examine the effect of various environmental conditions, amplitude ratios, electrical voltages, panel side to thickness ratios, aspect ratios, boundary conditions, curvature to side ratios, lamination schemes and types of loadings with random system properties. It is observed that the piezoelectric effect has a significant influence on the stochastic post buckling response of composite shell panel under various loading conditions and some new results are presented to demonstrate the applications of present work. The results obtained using the present solution approach is validated with those results available in the literature and also with independent Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS).

  • The classical equation of Jonathan Homer Lane and Robert Emden, a nonlinear second-order ordinary differential equation, models the isothermal spherical clouded gases under the influence of the mutual attractive interaction between the gases' molecules. In this paper, the Adomian decomposition method (ADM) is presented to obtain highly accurate and reliable analytical solutions of a class of generalised Lane-Emden equations with strong nonlinearities. The nonlinear term f(y(x)) of the proposed problem is given by the integer powers of a continuous real-valued function h(y(x)), that is, f(y(x)) = hm(y(x)), for integer m ≥ 0, real x > 0. In the end, numerical comparisons are presented between the analytical results obtained using the ADM and numerical solutions using the eighth-order nested second derivative two-step Runge-Kutta method (NSDTSRKM) to illustrate the reliability, accuracy, effectiveness and convenience of the proposed methods. The special cases h(y) = sin y(x), cos y(x); h(y) = sinh y(x), cosh y(x) are considered explicitly using both methods. Interestingly, in each of these methods, a unified result is presented for an integer power of any continuous real-valued function - compared with the case by case computations for the nonlinear functions f(y). The results presented in this paper are a generalisation of several published results. Several examples are given to illustrate the proposed methods. Tables of expansion coefficients of the series solutions of some special Lane-Emden type equations are presented. Comparisons of the two results indicate that both methods are reliably and accurately efficient in solving a class of singular strongly nonlinear ordinary differential equations.

  • Objectives: This study was designed to evaluate the changes in the particle filtration efficiencies of five cloth masks (4 plate types, 1 cup type) with an increasing number of machine washings and the degree of cloth expansion. Methods: NaCl aerosols were generated using an atomizer and passed through cloth masks in a dynamic aerosol chamber. Particle concentrations were measured both before and after for the cloth masks using an optical particle counter (OPC) in the size range of $0.3{\sim}10{\mu}m$. Results: In the original condition, the filtration efficiencies of the five cloth masks were A: 20.1%, B:30.9%, C: 25.0%, D: 26.5%, and E: 40.9%. As the number of washings increased in the order of one, two, and four times, the filtration efficiencies of cloth mask C increased. The filtration efficiency of A, D, and E increased after the first washing. With the exception of B, the filtration efficiency of cloth masks increased after the second washing and those of all cloth masks increased after the fourth washing. This might be caused by the fibers untangling from the yarn and being freed at one end. In this status, the packing density of the textile will not change, but the distances between fibers will increase, which might bring about an increase in filtration efficiency. When the cloth masks were extended by 10% and 20% in one direction, the filtration efficiencies of cloth masks B, D, and E decreased at 10% extension, and those of all cloth masks decreased at 20% extension. When the cloth masks were expanded by 10% and 20% in two directions, the filtration efficiencies of all cloth masks decreased by at least 34.7% at 10% extension, and by at least 60.9% at 20% extension Conclusions: The filtration efficiency of cloth masks could decrease after one to two machine washings, but will increase after four washings in comparison with their original performances. The filtration efficiency of cloth masks will decrease when they are expanded, such as when stretching over the nose during wearing status.

  • Shenyang was one of the representative transportation hub of Northeast China during the modern period. The formation and development of the railway network gave great influence on Shenyang's city development. In order to understand the relationship between railway and city development, first, we classified Shenyang's city development period by the railway network's formation and expansion process. Then, we analyzed the relationship between railway and city space by five categories. The results of this study are as follows. First, before railway was constructed, Shenyang was a castle city, which also was the economic center of Northeast China. This was the main reason Shenyang was chosen as a railway zone. During the modern period, the castle structure became an obstacle to city transportation and environment, therefore, it was disposed. During the period of railways' expansion, South Manchuria, Jingfeng and Shenhai railway line was constructed in Shenyang. Since each line had different operation organizations, city sites along the railways were planned separately. However, these operation organizations had one common purpose, which was to use railway as an accelerator for economic development. During the period of railway's military usage, railway was reorganized as military supply transport for the Japanese, which also was used as a tool for the expansion of colonialism. Second, after Shenyang's city space was reconstructed along the railway, it created a close connection with city structure, city facilities, landscape and city transportation system. Hence, the railway system played a key role in modern city planning.

  • In this paper, we propose a modified watershed algorithm to extract more correct edge and reduce processing time. Two new algorithms are proposed in this paper. The first one is applying two conventional watershed expansion methods known as rainfall and immersion simulation jointly. We analyze the advantage and problem of each simulation and then propose a new expansion method that keeps the advantage and removes the problem in order to extract more correct edge and reduce processing time. The second is a new priority decision algorithm to obtain more correct edge of a region. Some zero-crossing points of gradient are expected to be edge of a region but the conventional method has a limitation that it cannot extract those points as edge. Therefore we propose a new priority decision algorithm for watershed in order to get more correct edge. We compare the proposed method with the conventional method through experiments and prove that the proposed method can extract more correct edge of region.

  • The projectile afterbodies for zero-lift drag reduction has been analyzed using the Navier-Stokes equations with the $\kappa-\epsilon$ turbulence model. The numerical method of a second order upwind scheme has been used on unstructured adaptive meshes. Base drag reduction methods that have been found effective on axisymmetric bodies include boattailing, base bleed, base comustion, locked vortex afterbodies and multistep afterbodies. In this paper, the charateristics of turbulence flow have been studied for geomeries of multistep afterbodies. The important geometrical and flow parameters relevant to the design of such afterbodies have been identified by number, length and height of step. The flow over multistep afterbodies has been analyzed including expansion waves, recompression waves, recirculating flow, shear flow and wake flow. The numerical results have been compared and analyzed with the experimental datum.

  • A 5.0-inch plastic TFT-LCD with the resolution of $400{\times}3{\times}300$ lines (120ppi) was developed. The device is a transmissive type with the transparent PES plastic substrates. The PES films with one side barrier coating were used for the device. In order to produce the high resolution display device, the alignments between all the layers for the TFT and CF are essential. The fundamental shrinkage effect and the thermal expansion behavior of the plastic substrates with and without the barrier coatings were studied. The proper annealing processes followed by immediate second bar-rier coating processes provide the optimal alignment between all the layers of the TFT and CF..
