Learning a Second Culture through Interactive Practices: A Study-Abroad Language Learners' Experiences

  • This case study examines language learners' oral interactive practices and what they learn along with these practices. Language learners who study abroad take on the challenge of living in a foreign place and undergo difficulties in communicating and interacting with people in their new country. These difficulties, caused by cultural differences, are experienced most particularly in their daily interactions. Language learners' trials and efforts to learn English while dealing with a different culture and the difficulties are mainly observed for this paper. The process of learning a second culture is closely related to the process of learning a second language. Oral interactive practices can give the study abroad language learners opportunities to learn their target culture. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to discuss how participating in interactive practices assists the learners in understanding their target culture while they deal with their difficulties inherent in studying abroad. This study adds weight to the notion that culture is an essential and major factor in learning a language, and that only active participation in interactions can be effective in learning both a language and its culture.

  • The second-order motion characteristics of a semi-submersible are investigated in regular waves. A higher-order boundary element method in a frequency domain and a finite element method in a time-domain were applied to the numerical analysis of the nonlinear hydrodynamic force and motion characteristics of semi-submersibles in view point of potential flow. Various aspects of nonlinear effects on the heave and roll of a semi-submersible were numerically investigated and some selected cases were compared with the model test data.

Mandibular second and third molar protraction with orthodontic mini-implants: case report (교정용 미니임플란트를 이용한 하악 제2, 3대구치의 전방이동 : 증례보고)

  • This case report describes the management of a 30-year-old woman with hopeless mandibular first molars and right maxillary second premolar. The treatment plan included mandibular second and third molar protraction after extraction of mandibular first molars. Mini-implants were placed between roots of first and second premolar. Sliding mechanics with lever arm was used to prevent inclination of molars. A good functional occlusion was achieved in 38 months without clinically significant side effects. Most of the extraction space of mandibular first molar was closed by protraction of second and third molars. The skeletal Class II pattern was improved by counterclockwise rotation of mandible through reduction of wedge effect. Mandibular molar protraction with orthodontic mini-implants in adequate cases would be a great alternative to prosthetic implant and reduce the financial and surgical burden of patients.

  • This paper presents an efficient improvement of the iterative eigenvalue calculation method of the AESOPS algorithm. The intuitively and heuristically approximated iterative eigenvalue calculation method of the AESOPS algorithm is transformed to the Second Order Newton Raphson Method which is generally used in numerical analysis. The equations of second order partial differentiation of external torque, terminal and internal voltages are derived from the original AESOPS algorithm. Therefore only a few calculation steps are added to transform the intuitively and heuristically approximated AESOPS algorithm to the Second Order Newton Raphson Method, while the merits of original algorithm are still preserved.

Numerical analysis of second-order effects of externally prestressed concrete beams

  • A numerical procedure for the geometrical and material nonlinear analysis of concrete beams prestressed with external tendons is described, where the effects of external prestressing are treated as the equivalent loads applied on the concrete beams. The geometrical nonlinearity is considered not only the eccentricity variations of external tendons (second-order effects) but also the large displacement effects of the structure. The numerical method can predict the nonlinear response of externally prestressed concrete beams throughout the entire loading history with considerable accuracy. An evaluation of second-order effects of externally prestressed concrete beams is carried out using the proposed analysis. The analysis shows that the second-order effects have significant influence on the response characteristics of externally prestressed concrete beams. They lead to inferior ultimate load and strength capacities and a lower ultimate stress increase in tendons. Based on the current analysis, it is recommended that, for simply-supported externally prestressed beams with straight horizontal tendons, one deviator at midspan instead of two deviators at one-third span be furnished to minimize these effects.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze career behaviors(job exploration, job hunting) of the need mode in the women's second labor market transition. To obtain this objective 501 women, who quitted their job in 780 women randomly sampling completed questionnaire. To analyze data, $x^2$, ANOVA were executed. Research results were explained, there were no difference career behaviors, experience of career counseling, experience of career education, aspiration of career behaviors by the need mode in the women's second labor market transition. But, there were difference motivation of labor market entry, career barriers, preference of occupations, level of job competence of career behaviors by the need mode in the women's second labor market transition. The implications of the results on women's second labor market transition of developing career education and counseling programs were discussed and finally suggestions for further study were made.

  • The dielectric properties of SrTiO3 GBL Capacitor have been investigaetd as a function of the second heat treatment time and the amount of Ta. The grain size of semiconductive SrTiO3 after sintering at 1,46$0^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours in N2/H2 atmosphere increased as the amount of Ta increased, and then decreased as the amount of Ta exceed 0.01 mole. Also, the dielectric constant after the second heat treatment showed the same tendency. When the semiconductive SrTiO2 was second heat treated at 1,10$0^{\circ}C$ in air with varying time, the dielectric constant increased as the second heat treatment time increased up to 60 minutes, and then decreased as the time became longer than 60 minutes.

Asymmetry in mesial root number and morphology in mandibular second molars: a case report

  • Ambiguity in the root morphology of the mandibular second molars is quite common. The most common root canal configuration is 2 roots and 3 canals, nonetheless other possibilities may still exist. The presence of accessory roots is an interesting example of anatomic root variation. While the presence of radix entomolaris or radix paramolaris is regarded as a typical clinical finding of a three-rooted mandibular second permanent molar, the occurrence of an additional mesial root is rather uncommon and represents a possibility of deviation from the regular norms. This case report describes successful endodontic management of a three-rooted mandibular second molar presenting with an unusual accessory mesial root, which was identified with the aid of multiangled radiographs and cone-beam computed tomography imaging. This article also discusses the prevalence, etiology, morphological variations, clinical approach to diagnosis, and significance of supernumerary roots in contemporary clinical dentistry.

  • Since the interaction between the second-phase particle and grain boundary was theoretically explained by Zener and Smith in the late 1940s, the interaction of the second-phase particle and grain boundary on the microstructure is commonly referred to as Zener pinning. It is known as one of the main mechanisms that can retard grain growth during heat treatment of metallic and ceramic polycrystalline systems. Computer simulation techniques have been applied to the study of microstructure changes since the 1980s, and accordingly, the second-phase particle-grain boundary interaction has been simulated by various simulation techniques, and further diverse developments have been made for more realistic and accurate simulations. In this study, we explore the existing development patterns and discuss future possible development directions.

A Second-Order Design Sensitivity-Assisted Monte Carlo Simulation Method for Reliability Evaluation of the Electromagnetic Devices

  • In the reliability-based design optimization of electromagnetic devices, the accurate and efficient reliability assessment method is very essential. The first-order sensitivity-assisted Monte Carlo Simulation is proposed in the former research. In order to improve its accuracy for wide application, in this paper, the second-order sensitivity analysis is presented by using the hybrid direct differentiation-adjoint variable method incorporated with the finite element method. By combining the second-order sensitivity with the Monte Carlo Simulation method, the second-order sensitivity-assisted Monte Carlo Simulation algorithm is proposed to implement reliability calculation. Through application to one superconductor magnetic energy storage system, its accuracy is validated by comparing calculation results with other methods.
