Ballast water effluent treated by an electrolytic method contains reactive chlorine species and disinfection by-products (DBPs). In this study, we conducted whole effluent toxicity (WET) testing and ecological risk assessment (ERA) to investigate its ecotoxicological effects on marine environment. WET testing was carried out for three marine pelagic organisms, i.e., diatom Skeletonema costatum, rotifer Brachionus plicatilis and fish Paralichthys olivaceus. The biological toxicity test revealed that S. costatum was the only organism that showed apparent toxicity to the effluent; it showed no observed effect concentration (NOEC), lowest observable effect concentration (LOEC) and effect concentration of 50% (EC50) values of 12.5%, 25.0% and 83.3%, respectively, at brackish water condition. In contrast, it showed insignificant toxicity at seawater condition. B. plicatilis and P. olivaceus also showed no toxicities to the effluent at the both salinity conditions. Meanwhile, chemical analysis revealed that the ballast water effluent contained total residual oxidants (TROs) below $0.03{\mu}g/L$ and a total of 20 DBPs including bromate, volatile halogenated organic compounds (VOCs), halogenated acetonitriles (HANs), halogenated acetic acids (HAAs) and chloropicrin. Based on ERA, the 20 DBPs were not considered to have persistency, bioaccumulation and toxicity (PBT) properties. Except monobromoacetic acid, the ratio of predicted environmental concentration (PEC) to predicted no effect concentration (PNEC) of the other 19 DBPs did not exceed 1. Thus, our results of WET testing and ERA indicated that the ballast water effluent treated by electrolysis and subsequently neutralization was considered to have no adverse impacts on marine environment.

Wind and temperature were measured with a three-dimensional ultrasonic anemometer and the carbon dioxide concentration was measured using an infrared sensor in the tidal flat of Suncheon Bay. In general, as the temperature increases, the concentration of carbon dioxide increases, and as the temperature decreases, the carbon dioxide also decreases in the atmosphere. However, since photosynthesis declined immediately after the sunset, the concentration of carbon dioxide increased as the temperature decreased. In addition, near the high tide when the tidal flat is covered with seawater, the atmospheric turbulence was strong despite an increase in temperature, resulting in a decrease in carbon dioxide concentration. It is necessary to quantitatively evaluated the effects of photosynthesis, respiration and atmospheric turbulence on the change of carbon dioxide concentration over tidal flat ecosystems.
For the production of healthy shrimp(Penaeus chinensis, Penaeus japonicus) seedlings free from the white spot baculovirus(WSBV), we tried to disinfect shrimp eggs with iodine. A relative hatching rate of over 50% has resulted from the treatments of fertilized eggs of fresh shrimps(P. chinensis) with an effective povidon-iodine concentration of 20-200 ppm for 30 seconds and 60 seconds, respectively. The 60 sec treatment group with a 20 ppm effective povidon-iodine concentration showed nearly a 50% relative hatching rate. The over 50 ppm treatment group, however, did not result in hatching show a relative hatching rate. These hatching rates were similar to those in the fertilized eggs of kuruma prawns treated with povidon-iodine solutions. In case of washing fertilized eggs with UV-irradiated seawater 33.3% relative hatching rate in fresh shrimps was much lower than 55.2% in kuruma shrimps. Treatment fertilized eggs of 2 species of shrimp with 200 ppm iodine for 30 sec did not affect the survival rate of the larvae until the early stage of the post larvae even though the hatching rates were low. In order to produce healthy shrimp seedlings non-infected by WSBV, the shrimp eggs should be washed with UV-irradated seawater and sterilized with a low povidon-iodine concentration for a short time.
1. Production of the artificial zeolite from coal ash Coal fly ash is mainly composed of several oxides including $SiO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$ derived from inorganic compounds remained after burning. As minor components, $Fe_2O_3$ and oxides of Mg, Ca, P, Ti (trace) are also contained in the ash. These components are presented as glass form resulting from fusion in the process of the combustion of coal. In other word, coal ash may refer to a kind of aluminosilicate glass that is known to easily change to zeolite-like materials by hydrothermal reaction. Lots of hot seawater is disposing near thermal power plants after cooling turbine generator periodically. Using seawater in the hydrothermal reaction caused to produce low price artificial zeolite by reduction of sodium hydroxide consumption, heating energy and water cost. As coal ash were reacted hydrothermally, peaks of quartz and mullite in the ash were weakened and disappeared, and new Na-Pl peaks were appeared strengthily. Si-O-Si bonding of the bituminous coal ash was changed to Si-O-Al (and $Fe^{3+}$) bonding by the reaction. Therefore the produced Na-Pl type zeolite had high CEC of 276.7 $cmol^+{\cdot}kg^{-1}$ and well developed molecular sieve structure with low concentration of heavy metals. 2. Utilization of the artificial zeolite in agro-environment The artificial zeolite(1g) could remove 123.5 mg of zinc, 164.7 mg copper, 184.4 mg cadmium and 350.6 mg lead in the synthetic wastewater. The removability is higher 2.8 times in zinc, 3.3 times in copper, 4.7 times in cadmium and 4.8 times in lead than natural zeolite and charcoal powder. When the heavy metals were treated at the ratio of 150 $kg{\cdot}ha^{-1}$ to the rice plant, various growth inhibition were observed; brownish discoloration and death of leaf sheath, growth inhibition in culm length, number of panicles and grains, grain ripening and rice yield. But these growth inhibition was greatly alleviated by the application of artificial zeolite, therefore, rice yield increased $1.1{\sim}3.2$ times according to the metal kind. In addition, the concentration of heavy metals in the brown rice also lowered by $27{\sim}75%$. Artificial Granular Zeolites (AGZ) was developed for the purification of wastewater. Canon exchange capacity was 126.8 $cmol^+{\cdot}kg^{-1}$. AGZ had Na-Pl peaks mainly with some minor $C_3S$ peaks in X-ray diffractogram. In addition, AGZs had various pore structure that may be adhere the suspended solid and offer microbiological niche to decompose organic pollutants. AGZ could remove ammonium, orthophosphate and heavy metals simultaneously. Mixing ratio of artificial zeolite in AGZs was related positively with removal efficiency of $NH_4\;^+$ and negatively with that of $PO_4\;^{3-}$. Root growth of rice seedling was inhibited severely in the mine wastewater because of strong acidity and high concentration of heavy metals. As AGZ(1 kg) stayed in the wastewater(100L) for 4days, water quality turned into safely for agricultural usage and rice seedlings grew normally.

Hydrocyclone has been widely used for the solid-liquid separation in many industrial sites because of its comparatively preferable applications that can be applied to wide-range particle sizes. If seawater with impurities flows through pumps or heat exchanger, it might cause an decrease in the efficiency of cooling system In this paper, we have suggested some methods of separating impurities from seawater in the cooling system by using a Hydrocyclone. The effects of design factors as solid concentration, cyclone inlet pressure, flow rate and diameter of underflow on the separating performance of the Hydrocyclone were investigated The results from this study are summarized as follows: 1) In proportion to the decrease of solid concentration, the efficiency of solid-liquid separation is improved. 2) According as the cyclone inlet pressure increases the efficiency of separation is improved. Conclusively, this research suggested that the Hydrocyclone will be used as a pre-treatment system of cooling water in machines, and eventually prevent unexpected accidents in engine systems.

Estimation of chlorophyll a concentration (CHL) on coastal areas using remote sensing has been mostly performed through multi-spectral satellite image analysis. Recently, various studies using hyperspectral imagery have been attempted. In particular, airborne hyperspectral imagery is composed of hundreds of bands with a narrow band width and high spatial resolution, and thus may be more effective in coastal areas than estimation of CHL through conventional satellite image. In this study, comparative analysis of hyperspectral and satellite-based CHL images was performed to estimate CHL in coastal areas. As a result of analyzing CHL and seawater spectrum data obtained by field survey conducted on the south coast of Korea, the seawater spectrum with high CHL peaked near the wavelength bands of 570 and 680 nm. Using this spectral feature, a new band ratio of 570 / 490 nm for estimating CHL was proposed. Through regression analysis between band ratio and the measured CHL were generated new CHL empirical formula. Validation of new empirical formula using the measured CHL showed valid results, with R2 of 0.70, RMSE of 2.43 mg m-3, and mean bias of 3.46 mg m-3. As a result of applying the new empirical formula to hyperspectral and satellite images, the average RMSE between hyperspectral imagery and the measured CHL was 0.12 mg m-3, making it possible to estimate CHL with higher accuracy than multi-spectral satellite images. Through these results, it is expected that it is possible to provide more accurate and precise spatial distribution information of CHL in coastal areas by utilizing hyperspectral imagery.

A series of experiment was conducted to investigate the relationship between ammoia removal rate and ammonia loading rates in seawater filtering system using rotating biological contactor (RBC). In this experiment, RBC system was consisted of rotating polyvinyl film disks, which provided $12 m^2$ of total effective surface area in $0.075 m^3$ of volume. $NH_4Cl$ was added by $10{\~}150 g$ as a ammonia nitrogen source to determine ammonia removal rate in RBC system. Relationship between time required for ammonia removal (y: hour) and nitrogen inputted ($x: NH_4-N mg/l$) in RBC system was as followed: $y=3.51+7.76 lnx (r^2=0.936)$. At ammonia concentration $2 mg/l$, it took 10 hour for removal of ammonia in the RBC system. However, at ammonia concentration of $5 and 16.5 mg/l$, it took 16 and 27 hours, respectively. There was a decreasing tencency of an increasing ammonia in the rearing water. Finally, the ammonia removal rate in the RBC system increased with the rise of total ammonia concentration up to $16.5 mg/l$.
This study attempted to understand seawater characteristics like chlorophyll concentration (CHL), total suspended matter concentration (TSM), absorption characteristics, and remote sensing reflectance around Weno Island, Micronesia, located in the South Pacific Ocean near the equator. 50 in-situ measurement from May to June 2013 were analyzed and compared with data from around Korean peninsula. CHL around Weno Island was 0.11-0.49 mg/m3 (average 0.26 mg/m3), and TSM was 0.03-0.31 g/m3, (average 0.16 g/m3), showing typical clear water characteristics. Absorption coefficient of total suspended matters at 443 nm showed over 0.5 times less than that from East Sea and the slope of absorption coefficient spectrum of dissolved organic matter showed much larger than that of Korean peninsula, indicating the concentration of organic matter is very low and dissolved organic matter of marine origin is considered to be the main component in the study area. As a result of comparing the remote sensing reflectance spectrum with that of coastal waters around the Korean peninsula, coastal waters around Weno Island showed typical CASE-1 water properties. It was possible to understand the marine optical characteristics of coral reef habitats in tropical waters, and it can be used to develop seawater algorithms specialized in the study area.

To understand the growth of attached microalgae to the immersed artificial surfaces in seawater with exposure time, chlorophyll a (chl a) concentration and abundance of attached microalgae to glass slides, and primary productivity and chl a concentration on coverglasses were investigated in Incheon Harbour in May, June 1996 and January-February 1997. Chl a concentrations of microalgae and abundances of diatoms attached to glass slides reached 62.5 mg chl a $m^{-2}$ and $144{\times}10^3$ cells $cm^{-2}$, respectively, during the study period. Chl a concentrations increased with exposure time, and they were significantly correlated with the abundances of attached diatoms ($r^2=0.79$, p<0.001). The chl a concentrations of attached micro algae on coverglass reached the maximum values of 31.1 mg chl a $m^{-2}$ and 65.4 mg chl a $m^{-2}$, and then decreased in May, June 1996. But in January-February 1997, the chl a concentration increased continuously up to 98.9 mg chl a $m^{-2}$. The primary productivity reached the maximum values of 63.1 mgC $m^{-2}\;h^{-1}$, 347.0 mgC $m^{-2}\;h^{-1}$ and 78.3 mgC $m^{-2}\;h^{-1}$, respectively, in May, June and January-February. The primary productivity in May and June varied in accordance with chl a concentrations. But in January-February, the primary productivity decreased from 26 days of exposure while chl a concentration continued to increase. Two cases that primary productivity decreased abruptly seemed to be caused by decrement of chl a and light specific $P^B$ (chl a specific primary productivity) (May and June) and by decrement of light specific $P^B$ due to photoinhibition (January-February). The results of present study indicated that chl a concentrations and the primary productivity of microalgae attached to artifical surfaces immersed in seawater would expedite analysis of dynamics of biomass and physiological status of attached microalgae during biofilm formations.
