  • The phenomena of local scour due to a current from a seadike closure gap which is protected by rock, then on to an erodible bed, have been studied. Based on the data of hydraulic model test, the scour characteristics have been investigated for the variation of maximum scour depth with time until reaching equilibrium stage and the shape of ultimate scour hole. A brief evaluation of DHL formula for the relationship between maximum scouring depth and time and a dimensionless form leading to time-scale introduced. On the basis of DHL formula, modified DHL formula denoted DHL-RDC formula is extend to the range of estimation of scour depth compared to DHL formula verified by model test.

  • The basic analysis of Soil and structural mechanics for the bridge substructure affected by the flow of water is sufficient in the construction of such bridges, but the stability of scour resulting from hydraulic phenomena is insufficient. In addition, it is not enough to estimate the scour depth of the bridge which reflects the watershed characteristics of the domestic river because it uses the formula for calculating the scour depth of the overseas piers in calculating the scour depth of the bridge. In this study, the application of the CSU (1993) formula, which is currently applied to the national river design criteria, was reviewed between the two formulas after calculating the scour after calculating the scour by applying another bridge deck scour calculation formula to take into account the uncertainty in the calculation of scour. In this study, in addition to the CSU (1993) formula, which is currently applied to Korean river design criteria, another scour depth calculation formula is applied to calculate uncertainty in scour depth calculation, was reviewed between the two formulas. The review confirmed that the SSE (%) showed a difference of at least 2.08%, up to 91.23%, and SSEn(%) at least 0.19%, up to 415.91%, when compared to the measured depth of the pier based on the hydraulic model experiment and the depth of the pier calculated with the nine scour depth formulas in use. In other words, it is confirmed that there are many differences between the scouring formulas of piers. The results of this study are expected to be used to estimate scour depth in future river design.

  • In this study, the investigation of hydraulic characteristics and the pier data for the rivers in Youngseo area of Gangwon Province was carried out and the evaluation and comparison between the values from existing formulas and the values from the model tests was conducted, along with the statistical sensitivity analysis of the elements influencing the scour. As a result, the deviation between the values calculated from the existing formulas and the model tests appeared to be 1.09%~63.98% as the piers were getting larger, which indicated that the existing formulas were not appropriate to estimate the scour in the rivers in Gangwon area. And the formula which estimates the scour with the size of the pier only, among the existing ones, was far behind in estimating the sensitivity because of insufficient incorporation of the hydraulic characteristics, though it is convenient to estimate the value. The sensitivity analysis of the value from the model tests and the depth of the scour proved the significant impact on scour by the size of the pier and water depth, indicating 64% and 36%, respectively. In this study, the formula developed through the regression analysis performed based on the values from the model tests, which appeared to be appropriate for the rivers in Gangwon Province, was proposed.

  • This research calculated the scour depth of bridge according to inflow and outflow changes of stream's flood discharge and curves by applying scour depth formula for piers and abutments, and by comparing and examining them, evaluated the applicability of scour depth formulas. Overall, if the angles of flood discharge and inflow and outflow increase, the deviation rate of scour depth in bight increased. Especially the deviation rate was 58% at the inflow and outflow angle of $105^{\circ}$ that the bridge plan for this geography need careful examination. Next, as a result of calculating the deviation rate of scour depth at the bight by scour depth formulas, in case of pier, Andru formula showed 58% deviation rate, Laursen formula showed 26% deviation rate, and CSU. formula showed 17% deviation rate. In the case of abutment, Froehlich formula shows 44% deviation rate that when applying above scour depth formulas, scour depth calculation considering repairable characteristics of bight is necessary. Finally, about inflow and outflow angles of $45^{\circ}{\sim}135^{\circ}$ that showed big deviation rate of scour depth, this research performed regression analysis of deviation rates of scour depth due to flood discharge to suggest the regression formula.

  • The objectives of this study were to analyzes temporal variation of local scour depth in the downstream of weir with shapes. Prediction of maximum or equilibrium scour depth was the main focus of engineers and researchers in the downstream of weir. However, it is necessary to analyzes temporal variation of local scour depth in the downstream of weir to predict real time scour depth. Experiment were performed with various weir shapes like sharp crest and inclined stepped with time variation and non-dimensional scourhole shapes, scour depths were proposed. A formula for predicting scour depths with temporal variation for weir were proposed through non-linear regression analysis. Temporal variation of scour depths could be estimated with suggested formula and 4 input data (Equilibrium scour depth, weir height, overflow depths, and water depth downstream). Suggested formula could make it possible to design a apron and bed protection economically in the downstream of a weir by considering flood duration time.

  • In recent years, the occurrence of localized torrential rain has increased due to the increase in heavy rainfall and massive typhoons caused by abnormal weather. As a result, the flow rate of small and medium-sized rivers in Korea is rapidly increasing, affecting the safety of bridges and increasing the risk of scour. However, the domestic bridge construction technology does not reflect the watershed characteristics of domestic rivers because the bridge scour depth calculation formula developed overseas is used to calculate the bridge scour depth. Therefore, this study is a basic study for prevention of bridge damage according to scouring phenomenon, and a comparative analysis was performed between the experimental data measured through hydraulic model test and the scour depth formulas applied in Korea. In addition, the statistical analysis between experimental data and scour depth formula shows that Coleman's (1971) formula estimates the best scour depth. The results of this study are expected to be used to calculate more accurate bridge scour depth in river design and bridge design.

  • Bridge piers are sometimes damaged by local scour. Although the problem of local scour around pier has been studied extensively, it has been difficult to estimate local scour depth quantitatively. This study is concerned with local scour around semicylindrical piers arranged in various types under the condition of clear water scour. Through dimensional analysis, it was found that scour depths were relative to Re, Fr, and Ns. In the case of semicylindrical piers, the variation of dimensionless scour depth with dimensionless time (effect of Ns, pier diameter and length, incidence angle) and the variation of scour depth with vortex intensity and resistance are investigated experimentally to obtain a formula. And formula for estimating the maximum depth of scour is obtained.

  • Since the industrialization in the 1960s, Korea has been expanding its transportation infrastructure, such as building bridges. Owing to bridge construction, studies on stability review have been carried out, and stability-securing technology has been developed. On the other hand, these were applied mainly to the upper part of the bridge, so applications to the lower part are limited. In particular, scour at the bridge pier causes erosion in the riverbed and bridge collapse. Hence, prevention studies and countermeasures are needed. In this study, an empirical formula was developed to evaluate the scour depth of a bridge, which was calculated through multiple linear regression analysis using the hydraulic model study data conducted in previous studies. The formula, which had a value of 0.91, was applied to the model test data that was not used for development to verify the developed formula. When the pier scour depths were compared in 23 cases, the error rate was less than 20% in 16 cases (70%). The empirical formula developed in this study is applicable to pier scour-depth calculations. Further research will be needed to develop a more accurate empirical formula for pier scour-depth calculations, and it is expected to reduce bridge damage caused by scour.

  • This study was intended to compare and evaluate the value obtained from the existing formula for calculating the depth of scour and the valey from experimental model through the investigation of hydraulic characteristics and pier data in the area of rivers at Gangwon Province, and the sensitivity analysis, which is a statistical method, of the elements affecting the scour of the pier was carried out. As a result, a deviation between the values of existing formulas and experimental model reached about 1.09%$^{\circ}$63.98%, indicating that existing formula was found not to be appropriate at the rivers in Gangwon Province. A sensitivity analysis was carried out based on value obtained from experimental model and consequently, the elements affecting the scour were size of pier accounting for 64% and water depth accounting for 36%. Finally, a formula for calculating the scour of the pattern piers at the rivers in Gangwon Province was developed using the regression analysis.

  • Currently, we only estimate the average flood water level by the cross-sections of the river using one-dimensional numerical analysis when establishing the basic plans. However, the reliability decreases when it comes to the river bend. In river bend, the difference of water-level between the inside and the outside of the river arises by centrifugal force. And it is estimated less than what it could be estimated when establishing the plan with average estimate of flood level. It is apprehended that the exterior of the river will be under-constructed when establishing the scour depth only with the mean depth. In the case of local scour of the abutment, it is difficult to estimate its depth precisely, and it tends to be over-estimated in the case of the empirical formulas. Therefore, the modification considering the deviation of the water depth of the exterior of the river bend is needed. In observing the deviation of each formula in river bend, it is found: Andru's formula for 58%, followed by the Laursen's for 26%, and the C.S.U's for 17% in pier, while it is 44% for Froehlich's formula in abutment. Under the 500CMS of the flood discharge, the deviation of the scour depth between pier and abutment was about 10 %. However, in further flood discharge, it shows 24~58% the biggest in deviation of piers. It is concluded that the scour depth estimate should be done with 2-dimensional numerical analysis.
