Values can be regarded as an important factor which acts as an indicator showing each person's individual path of life. many researchers have suggested that values function as standards that guide thought and action. Values lead us to take particular positions on social issues and they predispose us to favor one perspective over another. Adolescence is an important period for the establishment of one's values. The values established during such a period become an important factor determining one's right personality and contents of life. In particular, it is important to take a study about the values possessed by gifted and talented children in Korea. There have been several researches regarding the cognitive and affective characteristics of gifted and talented learners in Korea. However, there has not been any research regarding their values in life. This study investigates the characteristics of values shown by 468 high-school students from two special schools for gifted students by using Schwartz's Value Survey Scale which is consisted of 57 value categories and 10 value types. According to the results of this study, the students from the special high-school for gifted children tend to promote such value types as 'autonomy' and 'stimulation' the most. Conversely, the same students tend to deny or ignore such value types as 'power' and 'tradition'. This study provides basic data regarding the values of gifted and talented students as the first research of its kind targeting gifted students in Korea. It has an important meaning for the research related to the characteristics shown by gifted students in Korea.
This study analyzes the surveys of attitudes toward science, the peer relationship, the achievement motivations, and the parents' attitudes to science gifted education. It have been conducted to 53 scientifically gifted and 120 non-gifted students. The findings from the analyses suggest that there exist few meaningful differences in the attitude toward science, the motive for achievements and the peer relationship except in the parents' attitude to the gifted student education. This means that the recognition and the attitude of the parents have great influences on non-gifted students especially female students in the process of resolving to take future directions to science fields and choosing the gifted education center. Accordingly, we are in dire need of the changes in the social recognition of science and it is strongly recommended to seek for the ways of promoting science and supporting engineering graduates at the level of nation, thereby establishing legal and institutional foundations to make effective human resource arrangements.
This study aims to examine how Science Gifted Education Center(SGEC) affect the decision of graduates of gifted education institute in applying for science-related Special high school. To this end, the study investigated factors that affected their decision on applying for higher SGEC, such as career goal prior to their admission to a SGEC, motivation for the admission, and curricular activities at SGEC. A questionnaire survey was administered on 30 students, and resulting data were used as basic information to construct interview questions. Selected 22 students among them were interviewed separately, with transcripts of the recorded interviews being analyzed. The results of the study indicate that among many factors of SGEC for the gifted which affected student's choice of special-purpose high school of science, activities of the center putting an emphasis on open research activities and social interaction had a positive effect on the students' choice of special high school.
The purpose of this study is to investigate current trends and future directions of research in the area of gifted education through the analysis of published manuscripts on giftedness and gifted education between $2000{\sim}2006$. About 521 articles among 35 journals and 49 dissertations listed in the Korea Education and Research Information Service, including the journal of gifted/talented education and the journal of giftedness and gifted education, were mainly analyzed in the present study. The articles were examined by topics, domains, ages, and research methods both yearly and synthetically. The most widely researched topic was curriculum and program issues in gifted education, and the topic related to factors and development of giftedness was the second. Most studies have continuously focused on the mathematically and scientifically gifted students, and studies on gifted students in the areas of art, language, and other domains were scant. Issues on underachieving gifted students and underachievement were researched actively in 2005. More research has utilized elementary students as samples rather than middle or high school students. Young children under 7 have attracted much attention by researchers after 2004. Related to research methods, literature review was the most widely used, survey was the second, and experimental and correlational studies were the next. Implications related to results were discussed in depth.

In this study, 46 teaching materials for understanding the nature of science (NOS) were developed based on the 42 statements describing the NOS. Each teaching material involves scientific knowledge and scientific inquiry skills as well as NOS statements. Teaching materials consist of students' learning worksheets and teachers' guides. Among the materials, 11 materials for understanding the nature of scientific thinking (NOST) were applied to 3 scientifically gifted students. As results, the degree of difficulty was appropriate and students showed interests in scientific thinking rather than new concepts or inquiry activities involved in the materials. It was expected that understating the NOST would be helpful for conducting scientific inquiry in more authentic way. And similarly to the Park's (2007) theoretical discussions about the relationship between the NOS and scientific creativity, students actually responded that undertrading the NOST could help their creativity. Therefore, it was expected that teaching the NOST would be plausible elements for teaching scientific creativity.
The aims of this study were to investigate the differences of the proportion of misconceptions and the reasons for selecting responses related to questions about small living things between talented and average students. The study subjects were made up of three groups. They were a class of 37 talented elementary students in science attending J National University of Education, a class of 37 talented students in science attending J City Office of Education, and a class of 33 average students attending J City. A questionnaire was composed of 20 test questions for examination of concepts related to small living things. The data obtained in this study was analyzed using a statistical program. The major results were as follows: In general, the level of the scientific concepts possessed by the talented students was much higher than that of the average students, especially in question 14. The reasons for the misconceptions which were revealed through this study were classified into vagueness of the language used, hasty decision and deduction making, using the wrong analogical inference, mass communications (TV or internet) and experimental differences between individuals. In terms of the reasons for the selection of a given response, the talented students had also a higher frequency in the 'science books for children' category than the average students, indicating that various kinds of science books for children have an influence on the formation of concepts on small living things. The misconception proportion of male students was 5.4% higher than that of female students in mean frequencies of all questions, although the difference was not statistically significant except for question 4. Data from this study may help teachers involved in education for gifted students to reconsider their conceptions on small living things.

The main purposes of this study is to develop a web-based STS biology instruction program (WB-STS) for the scientifically gifted students. The specific main research questions were as follows; 1. How can the WB-STS for biology education be developed and what are the primary components involved in it? 2. Is there any proper validity for developed the WB-STS in biology education? To solve the above mentioned problems, several procedures were applied. First, in order to develop WB-STS for the scientifically gifted students, NCISE, Renzulli' s Enrichment Triad Model and the Iowa Chautauqua program's main characteristics were analyzed systematically and the principles and general process for constructing WB-STS were examined. Additionally, the needs of students and the goals of Biology education were identified thoroughly. And then all these ideas were embodied in an agenda for constructing WB-STS. Second, to analyse the validity and utility of developing WB-STS, a questionnaire was developed and submitted to seven specialists and a group of twenty students who would participate in the experiment later. The main results of study are summarized below: First, WB-STS appeared to be successfully constructed based on Renzulli' s Enrichment Triad Model and the Iowa Chautauqua program. Its main features are that it was made emphasizing a learner-centered approach and constructive learning. It is composed of five steps: Scientific theme selection -${\rightarrow}$Exploration ${\rightarrow}$ Concept & Principle Check ${\rightarrow}$ Finding Solution ${\rightarrow}$ Action. Second, seven specialists and a group of students assessed the developed WB-STS's validity and utility with a questionnaire, the results appeared satisfactory. Students showed high interest in WB-STS and gave a positive evaluation of WB-STS.

In this study, we investigated students' behavioral characteristics in the process of and their responses to scientific creativity activities developed based on the three steps of learning model (Park, Park, & Lee, 2008) and scientific creativity model (Park, 2004). Students' responses were obtained by questionnaire, effectiveness of learning materials was explored by comparing students activities before and after the second step, 'Guide', and various characteristic behaviors were obtained through video-recording of their activities. As results, students answered that even though the activities were a little difficult, the activities were nonetheless interesting to them, and they wanted to do the activities more completely, and wanted them in future courses. It was also found that the second step activity was helpful in improving students' divergent thinking. Finally, from the findings about various students' behavioral characteristics, some practical recommendations for more effective teaching of scientific creativity were suggested.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the perception on science and scientists of the teachers who are engaged in the special education for the scientifically gifted, science-gifted students and their parents. For this study, 34 teachers, 222 students and 107 parents answered the questionnaire of the perception on science and Draw-A-Science-Test (DAST). The result showed that the three groups generally had a sound recognition but the score of recognition about a 'nature of science' was lower than other domains. The science-gifted students had less cognition about 'science and society' than their teachers and parents, but they had more positive perception about 'science learning' than their parents significantly. All of the three groups had the stereotyped image of scientist. About the internal images of scientists, three groups had a similar perception, and they showed higher scores in the cognitive aspect than emotional or ethical aspects. And the science-gifted students showed the significantly higher scores than their teachers and parents in diligence, imaginative power, concern about other people, respect for other's opinion, humor, artistic sense, respect for human, desire for peace. Three groups turned out to be influenced by movie, science journal, and biography as a source of scientist's image, but their contribution was different among groups.
The purpose of the present study is to compare paper and pencil test utilized to identify gifted students so far to the recently introduced teacher observation-recommendation system. More specifically, this study compared intelligence, career patterns, and self- regulated learning abilities of gifted students who were identified through those two different identification system to explore the possibility of the newly introduced teacher observation-recommendation system. The results show that there was no significant difference in the aspect of overall IQ score. However, students who were identified through the observation-recommendation system showed significantly higher scores at some subscores of intelligence test, such as vocabulary application, comprehension, and schematization. In the aspects of career patterns, about 72% of gifted students who were identified through the previous paper and pencil test belonged to the 'investigative' category of Holland. But more diverse career patterns such as enterprising, social, realistic, conventional including investigative categories were found in those students who were identified by the observation-recommendation system. There were also significant differences in the self-regulated learning abilities between two groups of students. Practical implications of the study were discussed in depth.
