  • This paper presents incompressible Navier-Stokes solution algorithm for 2D Free-surface flow problems on the Cartesian mesh, which was implemented to run on Graphics Processing Units(GPU). The INS solver utilizes the variable arrangement on the Cartesian mesh, Finite Volume discretization along Constrained Interpolation Profile-Conservative Semi-Lagrangian(CIP-CSL). Solution procedure of incompressible Navier-Stokes equations for free-surface flow takes considerable amount of computation time and memory space even in modern multi-core computing architecture based on Central Processing Units(CPUs). By the recent development of computer architecture technology, Graphics Processing Unit(GPU)'s scientific computing performance outperforms that of CPU's. This paper focus on the utilization of GPU's high performance computing capability, and presents an efficient solution algorithm for free surface flow simulation. The performance of the GPU implementations with double precision accuracy is compared to that of the CPU code using an representative free-surface flow problem, namely. dam-break problem.

  • Redundancy is commonly employed to improve system reliability. In most situations, components in the standby configurations are assumed statistically similar but independent. In many realistic models, all parts in standby are not treated as identical as they have different failure possibilities. The operational structure of the system has subsystem-1 with five identical components working under 2-out-of-5: G; policy, and the subsystem-2 has two units and functioning under 1-out-of-2: G; policy. Failure rates of units of subsystems are constant and assumed to follow an exponential distribution. Computed results give a new aspect to the scientific community to adopt multi-dimension repair in the form of the copula.

  • This research involved the conducting of an experiment in order to determine the relative effectiveness of constructivist science education when integrated with art experience and constructivist science education for young children. Forty-one children of five years of age in two daycare center classes were assigned to experimental and comparative groups. The experimental and comparative group participated in 15 units. The experimental group participated in science education integrated with art experience, while the comparative group participated in science education. The analysis of covariance revealed significant differences between the mean scores of the two groups on the posttests for science process skills and attitudes. This indicates that the children in the experimental group performed significantly better on the tests than the children in the comparative group. The results of this study suggest that incorporating constructivist science education activities with art experience are good activities for developing young children's science process skills and attitudes.

  • Science we have perceived as genuine science is based on western scientific enterprise, that is, western modern science(WMS). The K-12 science curriculum in Korea absolutely contains WMS content. Elkana(1981) criticized the indifference of comparative science in the field of science, whereas there have been a lot of comparative studies of art, religion, ethics, and politics. Science is the product not only based on 'western' culture but all cultural around the world including Korea. People have consistently observed and tested for such a long period of time all over the world. Traditional science of Korea can be related to multiculturalism, which has become important in many fields. Korea has a lot of great scientific enterprises, such as astronomical instruments of Chosun Dynasty and ancient data of natural phenomenon in Samguk-saki or Samguk-Yusa. It is expected that students will consider them as more 'objective' and 'realistic' things rather than 'artistic' and 'distinguished' things. Astronomy was also very important in the East because they believed sky as king, which results in the development of a lot of astronomical data and instruments in Korean history. In this study, we developed three units of science programs using astronomical enterprises in Korea: 1) Activities with our sundial, Angbuilgu:, 2) data interpretation of natural phenomenon in ancient Korea, 3) experience in Gyeongbokgung Palace. From these programs, we expect that students will develop a profound understanding and take pride in our science.

  • Owing to the development of science technology, particularly the smart concept and defense policy factors of the 4th industry, military weapon systems are advanced, and the scientific and operational force is reduced dramatically. The aspect of the future war is characterized by the operation of troops with reduced forces from advanced and scientific weapon systems in an operational area that has expanded more than four times compared to the present. Reflecting on these situational factors, it is necessary to improve combat methods based on the changes in the battlefield environment and advanced weapon systems. In this study, to find a more efficient future combat method in a changing war pattern, this study applied the battle experiment methodology using Vision21 war game model, which is an analytical model used by the army. Finally, this study aimed to verify the future combat method and unit structure. Therefore, the scenario composition and experiment method that reflect the change in the ground operational environment and weapon system was first composed. Subsequently, an analysis method based on the combat effectiveness was applied to verify the effective combat performance method and unit structure of future infantry units.

  • This work reports the pulse diagnosis system using FBG sensors which can display pulse signals detected while oriental medical doctors are conducting pulse diagnoses and simultaneously pressing the sensors by three fingers. Each optical fiber has five FBG sensing units fabricated in 2 mm width and 2 mm inter-sensor spacing. Three optical fibers with the FBG units in the parallel line configuration are then placed on each finger-pressing region and thus overall 9 fibers are used for the pulse measurements on the so-called "chon", "gwan", and "ch대k". A fixture holding the optical fiber arrays is able to adjust the height of the FBG sensing units while placing the fibers on the wrist. The pulse signals detected by the FBG sensors from chon, kwan, and chuk have been analyzed using 4 channel spectrum analyzer connected to the optical fibers. The measured pulse signals exhibit variations due to the nonuniform pressure distributions applied. resulting in the differences in the detected pulse signals between fiber lines. However. this work is the first step towards objective and quantitative analyses of the pulse diagnosis in oriental medicine which has traditionally been performed on subjective basis. Future works will be devoted to improving sensor stability, developing the way applying pressure and algorithms reporting the objective classification of the pulse status from systemic measurements using the sensors instead of relying on the clinicians' diagnoses subjectively performed. A successful pulse diagnosis system emerging in the future is expected to contribute to education as well as promoting pulse diagnosis in oriental medicine to the scientific research area.

  • Determining of Strategic Business Units in the organization is a major critical process for improving the organizational performance. On increasing the demands for extension in function of health center, many health centers are trying to provide the various services. But most health center determined the kind and level of service without scientific considerations. The purposes of this study are to develope the model for determination of strategic business units in health center and to test the availability of implementation for it. Our model is rooted from the McKinsey matrix analysis of Product Portfolio Analysis which used widely in marketing field. We modified the evaluation criteria of the McKinsey matrix analysis for health care field appropriately. Our evaluation criteria are categorized into two concepts; contribution of service, availability of service. At first, in terms of contribution of service, market size, market growth rate, needs and demands of regional people, existences of alternative services in that region, correspondence with health policy. The other component, availability of service are included the availability of manpower, financial availability, the level of knowhow on service, acceptance of health care manpower. In the result of analysis, we could conclude that antismoking and antialcoholics education programs, health screening program are important strategically in that aspects of contributions and availability of services. Also, vaccination program is important in that aspect of service availability and diet and exercise program, health library are meaningful in the aspect of service contribution. Therefore, we think that efforts to investigate the evaluation criteria for priority setting or determination of service area in health center are useful challenges.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze military combat training data to improve military operation and training methods and verify required military doctrine. We set the number of combat disabled enemies, which the individual combatants make using their weapons, as the response variable regarding offensive operations from scientific military training data of reinforced infantry battalion. Our response variable has more zero observations than would be allowed for by the traditional GLM such as Poisson regression. We used the zero-inflated regression and the hurdle regression for data analysis considering the over-dispersion and excessive zero observation problems. Our result can be utilized as an appropriate reference in order to verify a military doctrine for small units and analysis of various operational and tactical factors.
