  • This research evaluates the accessibility of the mobile applications for the South Korean libraries based on the accessibility guideline from the Ministry of Security and Public Administration. In order to enhance the credibility of the evaluation, this current research covers both the accessibility for the visually impaired and the accessibility for the people without disabilities. The research found four main results. First, we found that only 21 libraries (31%) provide alternative texts. Out of the 21 libraries, only one provide alternative texts across all sections of the mobile applications, including the main page, data search, information assistance, etc. Second, most of the mobile applications provide contents in texts, and the subtitles, sign language, blinking and background music provided as required or recommended standard by the guideline lack correlation. Third, alternative texts, focus movement, accessibility of operating system, button motion control, spacing between control and alarm functions must follow the standard guideline for the people with disabilities to use the mobile applications. Fourth, follow-up research on the development of accessibility standard for library mobile application is necessary in order to enable people with disabilities to freely use the library mobile applications.

  • A vast amount of materials-such as prints, woodblock prints, manuscripts, old novels, and letters-written in old Korean and using old grammar and/or obsolete characters, are collected in many institutions, including the Jangseogak at the Academy of Korean Studies. Digitization of these texts has required a prolonged manual inputting process. Individual researchers, who majored in old Korean, have read and typed the characters into electronic documents, which depends upon individual skill, effort, and approach, and is particularly limiting because none can be significantly increased. To date, only a small proportion of the old Korean document collections, currently kept in storage, have been digitized and made available to the public. Even the electronic formats of the texts prove difficult to displaying correctly, due to the incompatibility between the old Korean characters and the character set on today's electronic devices. To improve the techniques and efficiency of digitizing old Korean texts, it is necessary to develop optical character recognition (OCR), which will analyze images of old Korean documents, as well as input, display, and storage methods.

  • The study is to analyze the middle school-science parts among the products of nation-wide science exhibition for eleven years recently and the results of compared to the content of science-textbooks of middle school. The number of observation in the student parts among the products of nation-wide science exhibition was the highest in all methods studied, whereas, most teachers surveyed experiments in their products. The mean Shannon's diversity index (DI) was same trend for students and teachers. There was a non-significant difference of the methods in students and teacher groups according to years and the association between students and teachers were closely connected with methods. The correlation between the content of students' products and texts of middle-school was highly positive for earth science, chemistry, and biology, whereas physics showed negative correlation.

  • The importance of pedagogical content knowledge(PCK) has been recognized in learning science teaching. PCK is based partly on the essence of subject matter knowledges. Therefore, the effective teaching of science content knowledges is fundamental in preservice education of student teachers. But, particularly the science curriculum of primary teachers' colleges is composed of less lessons than needed. This research was executed to identify the content and context of earth science which were contained in questions by student teachers These questions which were written by the students about the earth science content in elementary science texts and teachers' guide books were collected and analyzed. Frequency and context concentration of questions about the themes of contents were obtained. In each unit of the text books, scatter diagrams of question frequency and context concentration of themes showed various features. The main results were as follows. first, in case of the units which contents ate composed of themes expected to be experienced in everyday life, the question frequency and context concentration showed positive correlation between them. But, other units, which everyday life experiences are not expected to influence, did not show distinct correlation.

  • In this study, we analyzed the form, presentation, and interactivity of external representations presented in the matter units of elementary school science digital textbooks developed under the 2015 Revised National Curriculum. The analytic framework of the previous study was modified and supplemented. The matter units in the 3rd-6th grade science digital textbooks were analyzed by dividing them into "body texts" and "inquiries" area. The results revealed that visual-verbal and visual-nonverbal representations were presented the most. Conversely, audial-nonverbal representations were presented at a high frequency only in the body texts, and audial-verbal representations were presented at a low frequency in both the body texts and the inquiries. Regarding the presentation, when verbal and visual-nonverbal representations appeared together, visual-verbal and visual-nonverbal representations were primarily presented together. In some cases where visual-verbal, audial-verbal, and visual-nonverbal representations were presented together, information on visual-verbal and audial-verbal representations was presented redundantly. Audial-nonverbal representations unrelated to contents were presented along with other external representations, and the frequency was particularly high in the body texts. Regarding the contiguity, no visual-verbal and visual-nonverbal representations were presented on different pages, and no audial-verbal representations were presented asynchronously with visual-nonverbal representations. Regarding the interactivity, explanatory feedback and low-level manipulations were mainly presented. Based on the results, implications to improve digital textbooks are discussed from the perspective of multiple representation-based learning.

  • Various new technologies and aiding instruments are always being introduced for the betterment of the challenged. This project focuses on aiding the mute in expressing their views and ideas in a much efficient and effective manner thereby creating their own place in this world. The proposed system focuses on using various gestures traced into texts which could in turn be transformed into speech. The gesture identification and mapping is performed by the Kinect device, which is found to cost effective and reliable. A suitable text to speech convertor is used to translate the texts generated from Kinect into a speech. The proposed system though cannot be applied to man-to-man conversation owing to the hardware complexities, but could find itself very much of use under addressing environments such as auditoriums, classrooms, etc
