  • This paper was made for the purpose of research for newly formed of Common Science subject and setting up for Common Science subject's place. For this purpose, I 1) reviewed the bacground of curriculum revision and newly formed Common Science subject. 2)reviewed the change of the current of science education and the study of Common Science subject in Korea. 3) examined Common Science subject as integrated science The results were as follow: l.Newly formed of Common Science subject motivated by current of science education in the wordwide, direction of the 6th curriculum in Korea and the actual condition of integrated science in foreign country. 2.1t emphasize on learning of inquiry method than system of knowlege, introduction to material connected with real life and science and technology in society in the Common Science subject. In principle, the level of concept in Common Science subject keep within level of Science subject in middle school. 3.Common Science subject is characterized by integrated science. And Common Science subject have to become more integrated science in the textbook and the teaching-learning as well as in curriculum.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a data base system for the information on science education research and development. As a part of this study, a data base program was developed on the Macintosh SE using the 4th Dimension from ACI. The data base consisted of two files, dissertation and journal. The information on the 107 theses including the master's theses and the doctoral dissertations from the Department of Scince Education, Seoul National University and on the 640 papers on science education from the first issues to the 1991 issues of five selected science education journals was input into the data base. The selected five Journals were Journal of the Korean Association for Research in Science Education(published by the Korean Association for Research in Science Education, 148 papers), Teaching Physics(published by Korean Physical Society, 164 papers),Chemical Education(published by The Korean Chemical Society, 98 papers), The Korean Journal of Biological Education(published by The Korean Society of Biological Education, 148 papers), and Journal of Science Education(published by Science Education Center, College of Education, Seoul National University,82 papers).

  • Various research methods have been used in science depending on the various contexts. This implies that certain methods or inferences may be more frequently used in earth science. The purpose of the study are to explore the contexts of earth science, and the inferences frequently used in earth science. The context earth science research is quite different from that of other areas of natural science in terms of its time scale, space scale, accessibility, complexity, and controllability. The purpose of earth science research is twofold: historical and causal. The inferences frequently used in earth science are abduction and prediction. Abductive inferences go from the resulting state to controlling state. Predictive inferences go from hypothesis to expected data.

  • Although constructivist assessment has been emphasized by many science educators, most elementary school teachers are still not familiar with this. In order to investigate the causes of this problem, we examined the perceptions of pre-service elementary school teachers toward constructivist science assessment and the relationships among the perceptions toward constructivist science assessment, the views on science teaching and learning, science teaching efficacy beliefs, and the perceptions toward constructivist science learning environment. Analyses of the results revealed that the perceptions of pre-service elementary school teachers toward constructivist science assessment were higher than those of the elementary school teachers reported previously. The results of a stepwise multiple regression analysis indicated that the views on constructivist science teaching and learning and personal science teaching efficacy beliefs were the significant predictors of the perceptions toward constructivist science assessment.

  • The Purpose of this study was to investigate secondary science teachers' perceptions on the goals of science education, science teaching strategies, science curriculum, and STS themes to ascertain the extent to which the current science programs incorporate with STS themes. The results of this study indicated that the perceptions of science teachers did not support the view that the STS themes have become established in contemporary secondary science education. However, they showed willingness to incorporate STS themes into their science teaching. Based on these results, the implementation of STS themes in science teaching were esstimated to be valuable for Korean science education.

  • This article describes the status of science teacher education in Taiwan. The pre-service and in-service science teacher training system, institutes, curricula, programs, and evaluation on the institutes were briefly introduced. The differences before and after the 1996 reform of science teacher training system were compared. Finally, the attempts and efforts that have been done through the channels of research to promote science teachers' professional development were addressed. These efforts include the Case studies of exemplary science teachers' teaching performances, the development of licensure instruments for the certification of science teachers, the use of computers and distance education for supervising student teachers, the exploration of promoting science teachers' understanding about the nature of science, the exploration of promoting science teachers' pedagogical content knowledge, the exploration of promoting science teachers' ability of increasing effective student-teacher and student-student interactions, and the exploration of effective teaching strategies.

  • The purposes of this research were as follows : (1) to investigate the effectiveness of the program for elementary preservice teachers, which was designed to develop postmodern views of science and constructivist views of teaming and teaching and (2) to find out the relation between students' learning approaches and their beliefs about science and school science. One hundred and forty three students enrolled in Science Education 11 in the University of Education participaled in the study. Students' beliefs of science and school science was not changed after treatment of the program. But they showed postmodern views of science and school science in comparison with the science teacher. Additionally the results showed that meaningful learners showed the constructivist view about school science as compared with the rote learners.
