  • This research aims to find directions for character education in science education and to analyze Nature-Study theoretically as one of the ways to implement character education in science education. In order to accomplish this, references for character education were collected and analyzed to derive the directions for character education in science education, and then the results were verified by expert workshops composed of 2 science education experts and 4 PhD students. Through the consideration of references for Nature-Study in terms of character education, we supposed to confirm that Nature-Study is an efficient way to implement character education in science education. The research resulted in the following: First, science education should establish it's own role in character education by expanding the domains of value and realizing practice-centered character education. Accordingly, 'Expanded model of character education (The domains of the value)' was developed on the basis of 'formation of relationships' with 'nature & environment, spiritual object' and 'The practice-centered character manifested mechanism' empathized 'formation of relationships' and 'practice' was also diagramed. Second, Nature-Study empathized 'Science Education through Nature' can be one of the efficient ways to implement character education in science education. Nature-Study corresponds with the directions of character education in science education because Nature-Study aims for character education in it's educational purpose and emphasizes 'formation of relationships' with 'nature & environment' and 'practice' in the real world. In conclusion, science education should establish it's own role in character education by expanding the domains of value and realizing the practice-centered character education and Nature-Study is efficient ways to implement character education in science education.

  • With the development of science and technology, an effort to investigate the current research trend of elementary science education will lead to future directions for elementary science education. This study set out to analyze papers published in Elementary Science Education by quantity, subject and methodology for the last ten years. The results were as follows: First, the number of papers has continuously increased for the last 30 years. Second, as for categorization by the functions of elementary science education, the number of papers was mainly published in the field of teacher education, which was followed by learning processes and teaching methods in the order. Third, in the field of the research subjects of elementary science education, many researches were conducted on scientific inquiries and concepts traditionally emphasized in elementary science education, and on gifted education recently implemented as part of national policy. Fourth, as for categorization by the methodologies of elementary science education, a survey study was the most popular, being followed by experimental study and literature study in the order. In recent years, researches based on the case study methodology have visibly grown in numbers, which seems to part of efforts to find implications with new methodologies among researchers facing limitations with the old ones in the middle of uniqueness called education.

  • This study was initiated to understand what students know, how they feel, and how they act in the perspectives of environmental literacy. This study takes it a very serious problem that there has been no data about Korean students’status of environmental literacy so far. Based on the correct diagnosis of Korean students’ environmental literacy, environmental education in Korea, including national curriculum, teaching materials and strategy, would take the right way. This study accepts Simmon (1995)’s framework of environmental literacy, consisting of 5 areas, environmental knowledge, skills, affect, and behavior, which is consistent with general goals of environmental education. This study analyzed the relationship between areas in environmental literacy and factors contributing to improving students’ environmental literacy. This study also checked which factors, including age, gender, parents’ schooling, environmental education in schools, and students’ science-related attributes, contributed to improving students’ environmental literacy. The results of this study will help science educators keep in mind how important it is to teach science from the perspectives of environmental literacy.

In this study, the science lesson applying STEAM education meant integrated lesson included 'Creative planning' and 'Emotional experience'. The study subjects were four classes of the 4th grade of D elementary school in Busan. Two classes including 43 students were experimental group and the others including 40 students were comparison group. For the purpose of study, 'The state change of water' unit in the 4th grade elementary science text book was analyzed and recomposed applying STEAM education. And the recomposed unit was applied to experimental group, whereas comparison group was taught traditional science lesson. The results of this study were as follows. First, the science lesson applying STEAM education influenced significantly the improvement of the creativity of elementary school students. Second, the science lesson applying STEAM education influenced significantly the improvement of the science related attitudes of elementary school students.

  • There were many studies on the science teacher. Also, there were many researches on the science teacher education. What seems to be needed is more analysis and synthesis of these results. In this study, the results of preceding-research were analyzed and categorized. The study subjects were preceding-researches published on the 'Journal of the Korean Association for Research in Science Education' and the 'Science Education' of America. The results of this study were as follows : The trend of research on science teacher and teacher education became more various and diverse. The domain of research were categorized in three : (1) Teacher Character(of Cognitive and Affective), (2) Teacher Education(of in-service and pre-service ), (3) Professional Practice (of Teaching). The implication of this study was that it was more necessary to investigate on the teacher's teaching strategies.

  • This study identifies and compares science content standards that are approved by departments of education in six states: California, Connecticut, Michigan, New Jersey, Texas, and Virginia. Specifically, the study examines the goals/visions, the organizing/progression principles, the strands of science content, and earth science content found in the states curriculum standards compared to National Science Education Standards. Although many states followed the recommendations of NSES or Project 2061, the format and content of the state science standards reviewed are very diverse. The diversity seems to reflect the diverse perspectives and needs of the states. The results of this study provide Korean educators and teachers with useful models or examples to incorporate Korean national science curriculum guides into the science curriculum frameworks of their regions or schools.

  • The purposes of this study were to develop science education programs for changing students' science research ethical views, and to investigate the types and features of their views, and to examine their changes overtime. The subject of this study was one 6th grade class(41 students) at an elementary school located in Seoul. The scientific research ethical education programs developed in the study was applied through 8 lessons over 4 weeks. The results of this study show that 3 types of science research ethical views were appeared in elementary students participated in this study: 'human technology centered views', 'value ecology centered views' and the mixed views. The numbers of students, who changed their views from type I or type II to type III, were significantly increased. Students with type III appeared to actively involve in classroom activities aligned with science research ethical issues. The results imply that intended science ethical education program can affect students' ethical views on science. It is also important to aware that teacher's effective assistance and help contribute to students' meaningful changes on their traditional scientific ethical views. Educational implications on science education are discussed.
