  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between anxiety, depression, low anterior resection syndrome, and quality of life after lower anterior resection for rectal cancer. Methods: The participants of this study were 105 rectal cancer patients who visited the outpatient department of a hospital in Seoul for treatment or follow-up consultations. Data were collected using self-reported questionnaires and clinical records. To measure the variables, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Low Anterior Resection Syndrome Score, and Quality of Life Questionnaire-Core 30 were utilized. Data were subsequently analyzed using the SPSS/WIN 20.0 program. Results: Low anterior resection syndrome was more severe among patients whose cancer was located closer to the anus, and had a greater range of resection in those who received neoadjuvant treatment. When anxiety, depression, and low anterior resection syndrome score were higher, quality of life scores were lower. Conclusion: These results suggest that low anterior resection syndrome may negatively impact quality of life. Therefore, it is necessary to provide patients with symptom management support/assistance through evidence-based nursing interventions, and evaluations of low anterior resection syndrome to relieve anxiety and depression, and thus enhance quality of life.

  • Background: This report determines the effects of a neurofeedback program on patients with breast cancer through a study of psychogenic factors(distress, depression, anxiety). Design: Randomized controlled trial. Methods: The study selected 28 patients with breast cancer and divided them into two groups: 14 subjects in the neurofeedback program group and 14 subjects in the exercise intervention program group. Both groups conducted one-and-hour training per session five times a week for a total of five weeks. The experimental group performed neurofeedback, and the control group performed a exercise intervention. The distress was measured using the distress management Test. Beck's Depression Inventory was used to measure depression. Beck's Anxiety Inventory was used to measure Anxiety Results: Both the experimental and control groups showed significant differences in distress, depression, and anxiety after the intervention (p<0.05) in the within-group comparisons. It was found that the experimental group showed more significant differences in distress, depression, and anxiety than the control group (p<0.05) when the two groups were compared. Conclusion: The results obtained in this study show that the neurofeedback program had a positive effect on distress, depression, and anxiety of life in patients with breast cancer. The study thereby proposes that the neurofeedback program should be applied as an intervention method for clinical use on patients with breast cancer.

  • The purpose of this study is to identify psychological anxiety factors related to firefighters' field activities and suggest improvement measures. To investigate the actual status of psychological anxiety factors, a survey was conducted on approximately 3,500 current firefighters, and the responses of 505 people who participated in the survey were analyzed. As a research method, frequency analysis and cross-analysis were conducted according to the general characteristics of the participants to determine the actual level of psychological anxiety in each work field and the results were analyzed. As a result of the analysis, it was statistically confirmed that firefighters feel a lot of psychological burden due to legal and institutional inadequacies during dispatch, return, or field activities, and frequent friction with civil servants is also a major cause of psychological anxiety. Therefore, based on the results of this study, it is proposed to establish a permanent legal support team in each city and province, designate and operate a hospital dedicated to psychological treatment, and establish a special provision for traffic accidents during the return of fire trucks so that firefighters can concentrate on their duties without psychological anxiety. do.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether wild ginseng (WG) administration could attenuate anxiety- and depression-like behaviors and expression of corticotrophin-releasing factor (CRF) and neuropeptide Y (NPY) following withdrawal from repeated morphine administration in rats. Male rats were administered daily doses of WG (50, 100, or 200 mg/kg, i.p.) for 5 days, 30 min before morphine injection (40 mg/kg, s.c). The anxiety- and depression-like behavioral responses were measured 72 h after the last morphine injection using an elevated plus maze (EPM) and forced swimming test (FST), respectively. Changes in hypothalamic CRF and NPY expressions were also examined by analyzing their immunoreactivities in the hypothalamus. Daily administration of WG significantly reduced anxiety- and depression-like behavior, and elicited the suppression of CRF expression and the stimulation of NPY expression in the hypothalamus. Our results demonstrated that WG extract might be effective at inhibiting the anxiety and depression responses due to morphine withdrawal by possibly modulating the hypothalamus CRF and NPY systems. Furthermore, these findings imply that WG extract can be used for developing new medication to cure or alleviate morphine withdrawal symptoms and to prevent relapses of morphine use.
